Many families in our community rely upon natural gas for heating, cooking, and bathing. We recognize there will be a need to continue drilling for some time into the future until renewable, non-polluting energy to replace fossil fuels have been developed.
Current methods of producing natural gas are unacceptable because they have the potential for harming human health and the environment. To protect the community, oil and natural gas development must meet the following conditions:
• All exemptions to environmental laws provided to the energy industry are eliminated;
• Injecting toxic, hazardours, carcinogenic, or other harmful chemicals into the ground is prohibited;
• The release into the air of any gas, vapor, or other subtance at levels that are harmful to human health is prohibited;
• Private property rights are protected by prohibiting oil nad gas development on privately owned surface property without the written permission of the surface property owner.
Our Approach to Natural Gas Development
We work to protect the Delta County, Colorado region, a truly special corner of Colorado:
• Producing $45 million in agricultural products in Delta County annually while employing 1,100 people on farms, ranches, vineyards, and orchards.
• Containing nearly twice as many organic farms as any other county in Colorado
• Growing most of the apples, pears, and cherries in Colorado.
• Home to the West Elks American Viticultural Area’s 12 wineries and the state’s second largest grape crop.
Our Home
Apples ripen at one of the area’s many orchards.
The Delta County region also features the Paonia and Crawford State Parks, the Gunnison Gorge and Dominguez Escalante National Conservation Areas, and the Grand Mesa and Gunnison National Forests, popular among hikers, hunters, mountain bikers, anglers, and many others.
We envision a day when:
• Energy companies produce oil and gas in a responsible manner;
• The state and federal govern-ment no longer permit drilling without fully considering the negative impacts oil and gas production may have on local communities;
• Elected officials and agencies use science as a basis for decision-making;
• Protecting human health and the environment is the foundation of our state and federal laws.
Citizens for a Healthy Community works to galvanize the community by informing the public about health and environmental threats from oil and gas development.
We engage stakeholders at the fed-eral, state, and local levels, including the BLM, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, and local Boards of County Commissioners.
