He highlighted certain initiatives that were introduced in 2010 but many Rotarians would not be familiar with. For example Associate Membership is a type of membership where each Rotary club has the flexibility to decide on the membership dues applicable. Moreover, another initiative introduced was where Rotary clubs can be flexible about its weekly meeting. Lastly, Satellite Clubs can be set-up with the objective of attracting Rotaractors who graduate from their clubs. IPP Jeffrey also proposed that a Probus club be considered for Seniors and Retirees which would permit further flexibility with no regular or weekly meetings plus be free from fundraising. PP David Ong, Chairman Membership Committee introduced and inducted Dr Jochen Krauss. Given his education, training and experience, Rtn Dr Jochen will be underMarketing & Strategic Planning classification. President

Corina Lai was delighted to induct another Rotarian to our club.

PP Eugene Lim shared details of an upcoming Golf Event on 23rd and 29th September. Our member, Rtn Jacky Wong has sponsored a $250,000 hole-in-one car. Kindly contact Eugene for participation at $288 per person.

IPP Jeffrey Chan introduced our Guest Speaker for the afternoon, PP Chris Bek from the Rotary e-club of Singapore and Co-ordinator – District Rotary Community Corps (RCC). The concept of RCC was developed to empower members of the community to take ownership of a project initiated by Rotary. Projects in remote areas such as in village, maintenance can become

an issue which is when RCC becomes relevant. Rotary Community Corps are registered entities under Rotary International. They need at least 10 members and pay dues which are not too steep. For example, last year as the Chairman RCC, PP Chris Bek initiated two RCC. One such organization in Indonesia started with 20 members but now they have more than 2,000 members owing

to their well-established contacts. They are involved in disaster relief. In urbanized Singapore, Resident Committees can be RCC. The partnership can be very useful since Seed-money can come from Rotary clubs while RCC members can implement the activities. During Q&A we further heard that RCCs are not under ROS and that there are only two RCC in Rotary District 3310. PP Vincent Chen led a vote of thanks on behalf of members of RCRC. President Corina Lai shared the festive joy with members by bringing not only assorted Mooncakes but also Chinese

lanterns for their children or grand-children. The meeting ended on a high note until we meet again next week.

President’s Column

Dear Members, I wanted to share a little information about Mooncake Festival

especially since we are a diverse group:

On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, many Chinese celebrate the

Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie) also known as the Mooncake

Festival or the Festival of Lanterns (Yuanxiao).

Significance

The moon is at its brightest, being nearest to earth on this date. Thus the association with the moon and the

"moon appreciation" parties (shang yue). It also coincides with the end of the autumn harvest and marks the

end of the Hungry Ghost Festival on the 7th month. Thus, the day is also traditionally auspicious for weddings,

particularly because the moon goddess is believed to extend conjugal bliss to the happy couple.

Mooncakes Making and sharing mooncakes is one of the hallmark traditions of this festival. In Chinese culture, a round

shape symbolizes completeness and unity. Thus, the sharing of round mooncakes among family members

signify the completeness and unity of families.
