W elcome back to Mossie Park for tonight’s visit

of fellow Lancastrians, Padiham FC. I hope everyone connected with the club enjoy their stay and have a safe journey home afterwards.

Tonight is a chance to forget about Saturday afternoons defeat at Congleton Town. The lads played well and were unlucky, especially in the second half where we had the home team’s backs to the wall. It saw us slip a place in the table to 6th.

Congratulations go to Carl Grimshaw who, if played, marks his 400th appearance for the Greens! Only current squad player Damian Dashti matches that!

As always, thank you for purchasing a programme for tonight’s game.

Enjoy the match.

G ood evening all, and a warm welcome to all players, officials and spectators of Padiham FC.

Enjoy your stay at Mossie Park and a safe journey home after the match.

A week ago today we played Bootle here at Mossie Park. Bootle are one of the favourites to gain promotion this season so it was always going to be a tough test.

We didn’t disappoint, the lads topped the Whitchurch performance with another solid home win against a very good side. Our home form of late has been excellent and we look to continue that tonight.

After a disappointing result away Saturday versus Congleton we want to put things right tonight and take all three points. Other than two mistakes defensively I feel we dominated the second half but credit

to Congleton they defended well. The dubious 3rd goal ultimately killed the game off but we didn’t give up we kept going which was good to see.

We are still in a good league position and tonight I’d like to add another 3 points to our tally.

Our skipper Carl Grimshaw comes back into the squad after serving a one game ban. Danny Regan misses out due to work commitments. Nathan Fairhurst is 50/50.

I hope we can put another solid home performance together and take a win into Saturday’s game against Winsford.

G ood evening and welcome to Mossie Park for tonight’s NWCFL Premier Division fixture. I would firstly like

to welcome the players, club officials and supporters of tonight’s opponents Padiham FC. We hope that you all have an enjoyable stay at our club and have a safe journey back home to East Lancashire.

One week ago in the midweek home fixture against Bootle, the lads put in a great performance against a top three team who have been on an incredible run of form over the past couple of months. That win pushed us into the top five in the league for the first time this season and we have seen a remarkable rise up the league since we were in the bottom two in the standings in early September. I have always said that on our day we are capable of beating anyone in this league and some of our best wins so far this season have been against teams who are considered favourites for promotion.

Last Saturday we travelled to Congleton Town to face a team which was expected to push on from their excellent 3rd position in the league last season with a strong title challenge but they have proven to be very inconsistent so far this season. We had already faced them here at Mossie Park just four weeks ago losing 3-1, so it was a chance for us to get some revenge for that defeat. However, despite a strong early start to the game, we conceded a goal on the counter attack after just 10 minutes and it then proved to be an uphill struggle after that against a big strong team who play very direct football. Our second half performance was much improved and we totally dominated the play and possession but it was just too much to expect us to turn around a three goal deficit. After the game, many of the Congleton supporters were very complimentary about our play during the game but in the end, we didn’t come away with anything from the game, so we just have to work hard and move on to the next game.

Tonight’s opponents Padiham have endured a difficult first few months of the season with just three league wins from fourteen fixtures, pushing

them down into the bottom five in the league. Despite their inconsistent form, we will have to be on our game tonight to take the three points and there is no doubt that they will be difficult opponents who must not be underestimated. I mentioned to some of my club colleagues on Saturday that our midweek form seems to have been better than our Saturday form, so let us hope for another good midweek performance tonight.

On Saturday, our Reserve team recorded an excellent 3-1 win at home to Kendal United. Unfortunately our league position for the Reserve team is now blighted by the deduction of 12 points, due to us playing two ineligible first team players at a fixture in late September. We fell foul of a league rule which prevents us from playing any first team players who have played a first team fixture in the previous 22 days. I do know that Garstang and Longridge Town are also struggling with this rule for their own Reserve teams who play in the same league.

There should hopefully be a new face joining the First Team setup this evening as we welcome Danny Nolan, who will be taking over the vacant First team coach role, replacing Dan Crofts who has been unable to commit to the club following his move to a permanent role at Blackpool FC. Danny has a long association with the club and has been playing for the Reserve team so far this season. We hope that his wealth of overseas coaching experience can provide a positive boost to the first team for the remainder of the season.

On a final note, tonight we should hopefully see Carl Grimshaw recording his 400th appearance for Charnock Richard since joining the club at the start of the 2009/10 season. I am sure you will all agree that Carl has made a remarkable contribution to the success of our club over many years and long may it continue. Please give Carl your very best support and congratulations tonight.

That’s about all from me from me for now but as always, please enjoy tonight’s match and get behind the lads with your fantastic support.

06 THE OFFICIAL CHARNOCK RICHARD FOOTBALL CLUB PROGRAMME

FROM THE CHAIRMAN SHAUN TOOTELL

THE BOARDROOM SHAUN TOOTELL

Good afternoon and welcome to Mossie Park for thisthird home league game of the season for CharnockRichard FC in the Hallmark Security League. On behalfof everyone here at Charnock Richard, I would like towelcome the management, players and committeefrom St Helens Town. We hope you all have a veryenjoyable day at our club and have a safe journeyback home.

Our first ever home league game two weeks ago againstAlsager Town was a bit of a wake-up call for us all andshowed everyone that we can expect to face some verydifficult opponents in this league. It is however veryencouraging that as I write this article, the team has sincebounced back with two excellent away wins at Silsden andWhitchurch Alport. We were advised by the league thatone of the management committee would be present at ourfirst home game to offer advice and support on the day andit was the league Ground Grading Chairman GeoffWilkinson who visited us on the day. Geoff is very wellknown to us all here at Charnock and has been offering theclub valuable advice on ground grading matters over anumber of years. It is fair to say that Geoff’s advice hashelped to save the club a lot of money which could havebeen spent unwisely as we developed the Mossie Parkfacility.

On the day, Geoff took the opportunity to update us on ourcurrent Ground Grading status. For those who are notfamiliar with the grading standards, grounds must initiallymeet the FA Grading Standard H to gain promotion into theNorth West Counties League. Following admission into theleague, all clubs must then meet Grading Standard G bythe 31st March in the following year (in our case 31stMarch 2017). The difference between Grade G and H isvery minimal - Grade H requires a minimum coveredspectator accommodation of 50, whereas Grade Grequires a minimum covered spectator accommodation of100 (of which 50 must be seated and located in onestand). Both Grading Standards state ‘All seating mustafford a good view of the pitch’ and whilst our currentseated stand holds just over 100 seats, only the higher 50seats meet this criteria due to the potential for standingspectators along the touchlines blocking the views from thelower seats. It is fair to say that we have visited othergrounds recently and the same argument could be raisedas to whether some ground level seating at other venuesafford a good view of the pitch but we will leave that forothers to debate.

At the end of the day we have a responsibility to complywith the Ground Grading Regulations, so we have apredicament which must be resolved within the next sixmonths. One option would be to raise the height of thecurrent stand to ensure all that all 100 plus seats afford agood view of the pitch - not an easy option but notimpossible. A second option would be to build a coveredstanding area to accommodate 50 or 100 spectators sothat we can meet the Grade G requirements. Theseissues will be discussed at the next committee meetingwhich will be held in a few days’ time and hopefully wewill agree our preferred strategy going forward. Oneissue we mustn’t forget is that should we be the fortunateposition to challenge for promotion to the PremierDivision next season, then the ground must the meet therequirements of Grade F which will almost certainlyrequire us to raise the height of the stand to allow all 100plus seats to give a good view of the pitch.

On a final note I would like to thank many of you whoattended our recent Reserve league game at home toWorkington Reserves. Not only did we get an excellentattendance on a Monday evening but it is fair to say thatit was a superb game of football played by two excellentyoung sides who were both a credit to the game. I lostcount of how many spectators came up to me after thematch to say that they had thoroughly enjoyed the game.

That’s enough from me for the time being, so pleaseenjoy your day and hopefully we can look forward toseeing you again at Mossie Park as the seasonprogresses.

G ood evening and welcome to Mossie Park for this North West Counties League Premier Division game against

our fellow Lancastrian visitors from Padiham. We would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm Charnock Richard welcome to the players, club officials and supporters of ‘The Storks’ and hope that you will enjoy your stay with us and have a safe and trouble-free journey home after the match. We would also like to give a warm welcome to tonight’s match officials in the shape of referee, Michael Crusham and his two able assistants, Aran Hodgkinson & Jonathan Chadwick.

Tonight’s game was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday the 9th of November but was postponed due to Padiham’s involvement in the Second Round of the Macron League Cup.

After finishing in 18th spot in the Premier Division last term the East Lancashire side will be hoping for an improvement this time around. ‘The Storks’ started the season well enough. Despite an opening day defeat at 1874 Northwich, they won both of their next two games which were also away from home. A 2-0 win in the Premier Division on the 7th of August was followed by an excellent 4-0 success in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup at Athersley Recreation of the Northern Counties East League three days later. Whilst Padiham’s league form was a little disappointing they excelled in the cups. The Calderdale side won 5-0 at home at the Arbories against old protagonists of ours, Bedlington Terriers, in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase on the 31st August but went one better than that on the 19th October when overcoming Division 1 South side St Martin’s 9-1 in the First Round of the League Cup, again at the Arbories. It was to be the club’s only success during a torrid month which saw them gain only a single point from three league outings following a commendable 3-3 draw at Runcorn Town on the 30th of October. During the month they slipped ‘quietly’ out of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy at the first hurdle when losing out at home to Prestwich Heys in a First Round penalty shoot-out on the 1st October and losing out to Bishop Auckland 0-1 at home in the First Round of the FA Vase. Despite, this we will find them eager to put things right in the league tonight and our lads will have to put on a performance if we are to gain any points.

Looking back over the past, I noticed that we first met Padiham in the 1990’s when they had a short

sojourn in the West Lancashire League, and so, they are not really ‘newcomers’ to Charnock.

Last week we had to face a major problem concerning the FA’s Whole Game System. This information technology system was originally set up as an administration tool used to conduct disciplinary matters. In more recent times the system has moved into other club administrative areas such as league and County FA registration and affiliation. The whole concept is meant to speed up procedures whilst at the same time cutting down on hard copy (paperwork). The reality though is that the opposite has happened. Indeed, the chances of major error and confusion have increased dramatically which in turn has often extended the amount of time spent on resolving even the most simplest of issues.

Resolving player disciplinary matters such as cautions, for example, has become irritatingly complicated on occasions due to name duplication. This issue in particular, of what I call ‘name metamorphosis’, has blighted, what should be a simple procedure.

The case I now refer to, which occurred last week, involved the non-notification of a sending-off and a caution. When a referee has taken action against an individual such as a sending-off, caution and now a temporary dismissal (sin-bin), the match official is then responsible for reporting the matter to the Football Association. The club then receives the sanction placed upon the errant individual via the Whole Game System. The club secretary then has the responsibility of acknowledging the sanction and informing the team manager and person concerned about the action taken against him/her. Simple you may think, and in the majority of cases this is true. However, if the flow of information is either incorrect, or, as in our case last week, does not appear on the Whole Game System at all, then it falls upon the club secretary to investigate the matter without delay. When the situation is beyond the secretary’s control, then the support of the County FA can be invaluable. Sometimes however, this support can be found wanting. This invariably can leave a club secretary in a predicament not of his/her own making. This was the case last week. Anxiety, stress; you name it. A couple of listless and partially sleepless nights ensued. I was thankful for the support of our fine chairman Shaun Tootell and an officer of the North West Counties League in the shape of Stewart Taylor. They ensured that I kept my mind focused with some welcome and valuable advice. Dave Rowland, Secretary

SECRETARY'S REPORT DAVE ROWLAND

SECRETARY’S REPORT DAVE ROWLAND

Welcome to Mossie Park for this afternoon’s DivisionOne game against Sandbach United who are visitingus for the very first time and a warm Charnock welcome to all who have travelled up from deepestCheshire to be with us today. We hope that you willenjoy your stay and have a safe and trouble-free journey home after the game. The East Cheshire sideare a friendly and welcoming club as we found outwhen visiting them on that ill-fated fog-bound afternoon at the end of November. It is hoped that wecan return their excellent hospitality today.

I first met United’s secretary, John Clayton, and a coupleof their committee, at the Imperial Hotel on the NorthPromenade in Blackpool when attending the North WestCounties League AGM back on the 11th June. Applicantclubs were asked to remain outside of the meeting untilbeing summoned by League Chairman Paul Lawler whenthe representatives from each of the six applicants werecalled upon to give an introductory speech to the assembled throng before being voted in by the memberclubs. As we waited nervously in an adjacent room, SteveMawdesley and I got into conversation with the Sandbachcontingent and quickly found them to be a very sociablegroup. We got on with them immediately and it was andenjoyable exchange. That day we made our first friends inthe North West Counties League and long may it continue.

Sandbach United are one of the six newcomers to theNorth West Counties League this season and spent theprevious campaign at Step 7 in the Cheshire Leaguewhere they finished in 4th spot in the Premier Division.Like most of the newly promoted clubs they have made agood impression in their first season in the competitionand we wish them well. Today is of course our last homegame of the season not withstanding any play-off gamethat we may be involved in. To say that it has been a special one would be an understatement. We have enjoyed some wonderful football, been to many differentvenues for the first time, met some really great people andmade many new friends. When we left our comfort zone inthe West Lancashire League, we did so because the clubhad grown and developed to a point where new challenges and new horizons had become a necessity.

A new direction was needed if the club was to grow. Remaining stagnant was not an option. We have hadproblems to contend with. Finding funding for essentialground development and finding an appropriate level forour reserve side was only a couple of examples. The immediate aim was to consolidate at Step 6 level in theNational League System and to be in a position to sustain this in the long term. The players of our threesenior teams have had a fine season and once again thishas been due to the management skills and dedication ofthe management teams of all three. On the administration side, we have been joined by David Smithand Brian Lowe who have very kindly agreed to give oftheir precious time and for this we are very grateful.

For me, this is my fifth season as secretary and I canhonestly say, hand on heart, that the 2016-17 campaignis one of the best that I have enjoyed in football. At timesit has been hard graft and there are many individualswho have put in a good deal of that this term, literally. It isthe combined efforts of you all that make this, such aspecial football club and such a wonderful place to be.Of course, we do not know just how things will pan out asafter today. Indeed, we have three very difficult awaygames to negotiate. Whether we are in the play-offs ornot is anybody’s guess but it is a sign of the success thatwe have enjoyed, when we are still talking about wherewe will finish amongst the top group at this stage of affairs. Whatever occurs, well done one and all.

Dave Rowland | Club Secretary

It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of

Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England.

The Padiham Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879, reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.'s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall.

At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham's initial decade of success.

Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham`s progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an

ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues.

The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club`s involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915 - 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when they were reformed.

The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club's opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 - 50 football season.

In 1982, Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons.

Padiham returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000/2001 season, winning the Premier Division Title in 2012/13 to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League, where they spent two seasons before being relegated back to the North West Counties Football League for the 2015/16 season. Since 1999 the club has spent in the region of £600,000 upgrading their ground.

I was recently given a pen-drive by Keith Reader with an immense amount of pictures and other items

from years gone by. They’re amazing to look at and maybe at the start of next season I will add some of these in the programme (space permitting) as well as getting some information and stories about each one. I’ve even spotted myself behind the goal of a Chorley friendly from 2009!

As it’s (likely) to be Grimmy’s 400th appearance tonight, I’d like to share some photos I have of his career at Mossie Park.

D espite dominating for the final half hour Charnock suffered a 3-1 defeat, the same score as

at Mossie Park in September, at the 106.9 Cheshire Silk Stadium home, of Congleton Town.

Two goals in the opening half hour set the home team on their way to victory and a controversial third goal early in the second half left the Villagers with a huge task to get something out of the game. They pulled a goal back and with a little more luck they could have been rewarded for some excellent spells of passing football.

There was one enforced change to the starting line-up that defeated Bootle on the previous Tuesday, Carl Grimshaw was suspended so Oliver Oxley came in. Danny Regan, back from injury, was on the bench alongside Owen Morris, Owen Green and Oliver Turner.

It was an overcast afternoon with light rain that turned heavier as the game progressed. There was a heathy attendance of 195.

Congleton won the toss so Charnock kicked off playing down the slight slope. The Bears won an early free kick from which Wellstead headed wide. Charnock first real attack saw Haydock head a

Davison chip over the bar. The difference in tactics between the sides soon became apparent with Charnock, as usual, playing their normal short passing game and the homesters committed to long passes to turn the Charnock defenders and this was to prove very effective. So the Villagers saw plenty of the ball but did not carry the same threat as the home team. If it came down to possession the first home goal on 10 minutes was against the run of play but its execution was ruthless. Wellstead out muscled Griffith to a ball just inside the Charnock half cut out to the right and delivered a diagonal ball to the back post where Cope slid it into the net. Charnock continued to play their football but it proved very difficult to penetrate the home defence. Bibby played a 1-2 with Darr and was into the area but he seemed to stumble and the chance was lost after 12 minutes. A free kick for a foul on Oxley on 18 minutes gave Bibby a chance from the edge of the area but his effort was over the bar. Cole than had a chance for Congleton but his shot was straight at Ascroft. Darr got down to the bye-line on 20 minutes but his cross took a slight deflection off a defender and Oxley failed to make contact with the ball. Davison then produced a powerful shot that keeper Chapman took two attempts to collect. Charnock remained vulnerable to balls over the top and when Cope raced

clear Aaron Griffith somehow got back to pull off a wonderful tackle to rob the striker just as it looked as if the Villagers would go even further behind. The home team were not hesitating to shoot but the only efforts on target did not cause Ben Ascroft any problems. Yellow cards to Walker and then Bibby in two minutes saw the second foul lead to the home team increasing their lead. Bibby’s foul out on the right saw the free kick taken by Diskin find the net at the near post after 32 minutes. Immediately upon the restart Congleton had two players booked. Charnock continued to play some decent football without creating chances whilst the direct style of the home team meant that they always looked threatening when going forward.

Charnock made a decent start to the second half but once again were caught out by a ball over the top on 51 minutes, Cope raced in and used his hand to knock the ball past the advancing Ascroft and run it into the net. However, neither the referee nor assistant saw the offence and the goal stood. It was very disappointing for Charnock as they faced a real uphill struggle at 3-0 down. Danny Regan replaced Aaron Griffith on 54 minutes and Walker dropped into the back three. Charnock were not too dis-spirited and they pulled a goal back on 57 minutes that was typical of the game; the home team had scored three times with their direct approach but the Charnock goal came from a lovely neat passing build up and JORDAN DARR finished it off from right in front of the goal.

From this point the Villagers really took charge and it almost became a game of attack against defence as Charnock won a series of corners, shots were blocked and a number of vital passes were cut out by the home defence. Bridge got forward for Congleton but shot over the bar. Bibby had a powerful shot turned away by Chapman before Oxley headed over from close range. To be fair the ball took a late deflection otherwise it could have been a goal. A break from Congleton saw Woods get back and Diskin, who looked odds on to score, was left on his backside in the area. So despite a great finish to the game by the Villagers they had to accept the defeat.

Credit must be given to some fine defending by the home team, not once did they allow Charnock to turn them and against two powerful centre backs the Villagers struggled to penetrate through the middle. Congleton maintained a rigid back four with both full backs rarely venturing forward so Charnock found it difficult to create chances in the penalty area.

Overall Charnock played some excellent football similar to that which has produced three excellent home wins in the last few weeks but on this occasion they failed to defend adequately

D id you see the England performance against Montenegro last Thursday? It was almost as good as our two

recent games here at Mossie Park against Whitchurch Alport and Bootle; high tempo, goals galore and the absence of VAR. Great stuff. Moving away from International football, here is a brief history lesson of how game of football was born in the North West in the late 19th Century.

The Lancashire Football AssociationThere is evidence that organised football was

being played in the North as long ago as 1871, with games being conducted under what was then known as the Harrow Rules.

In 1874 the Rules of the London football Association were adopted by Turton, who, along with Darwen, were to become instrumental in the formation of the Lancashire Football Association some four years later on the 28th September 1878.

Turton, who it would appear, believed passionately in affiliation and organisation encompassing the London Football Association Rules, were to promote the idea through their various connections throughout the game in Lancashire. In 1876 for instance, in arranging their fixtures, they agreed to play Darwen subject to the match being played according to the London Associate Rules, and asked for confirmation of this in writing from the Darwen secretary. Indeed, they were to become, not only the pioneers of the London Association Rules in the North, but jealous guardians of the right interpretation, as they saw it, of the game proper.

With the growth in popularity, of what was a relatively new sport at the time, new clubs began to spring up, mainly in the East and South of the County in such places as Blackburn, Bolton and Darwen. It was of little surprise then that the desire for control and co-ordination within the

County found expression in the formation of the Lancashire Association and that the first steps should be taken near Turton.

A meeting was held one Sunday afternoon at Bramley Cross in the old fashioned parlour of the Volunteer Inn and it was decided to convene a representative meeting of clubs, with the sole purpose of setting up an Association in Lancashire. This further meeting took place on 28th of September 1878 in Darwen, Extracts from that historic meeting are as follows:

September 28th 1878A meeting of the Association Football Clubs of

Lancashire called by Thomas Hindle acting on behalf of the Darwen Football Club, was held in the Conversation Room, Co-operative Hall, Darwen, to consider the advisability of forming a Lancashire Football Association.

The following clubs sent two representatives to the Meeting viz.; Astley Bridge, Cloughfold, Blackburn Rovers, Blackburn Park Road, Livesey United, St Mark’s, Blackburn St George’s, Christ Church, Bolton Rovers, Bolton St George’s, Emmanuel, Bolton Wanderers, Great Lever, Bolton North End, Eagley, Turton, Church, Enfield, Darwen, Darwen Rangers, Lower Darwen Haslingden Rangers, Haslingden Grange.

Mr Thomas Hindle of Darwen has then elected to serve as Chairman and the meeting continued.

Thomas Duxbury (Darwen) moved, and T Dixon, (Turton), seconded, that “this meeting considers it advisable and expedient to form a Lancashire Football Association, and pledged itself to take the necessary steps to attain that object“.

The motion was then put to the meeting and carried unanimously. Rules were then drawn up to accommodate the new Association which was to begin life, develop and grow to become a most influential force in the early development of the game nation-wide.

The following clubs were the first members of

Birth and death of the old Lancashire League:Following the success of the Football League which

had been launched in the 1888-89 season, and with the proliferation of established professional sides in and around Lancashire’s towns and cities, demand had grown for a county competition. At a meeting organised by the secretary of Earlestown at the Saddle Hotel in Bolton in 1889 the Lancashire League became a reality. The competition ceased to exist at the end of the 1902-03 season with its clubs forming the basis of a new Second Division of the Lancashire Combination.

Dave Rowland, Secretary.

FLEETWOOD HESKETH 1 CHARNOCK RICHARD 2West Lancashire League Premier Division22nd November 2014

Team: Gavin Bates, Jamie Sanderson, Damian Dashti, Ross O’Farrell, Liam Hayton, David Fisher (Andy Roberts 78), David Prout, Chris Bennett, Carl Grimshaw, David Burrows, Danny Nolan (Spencer Bibby 84). SUBS: (Not Used) John Sanderson, Andy Pendlebury.

Following the disappointing defeat at Eagley the previous week this was a great result which was thoroughly deserved after an encouraging performance. Charnock were thwarted in the first half by some excellent saves but a goal just before break set them up for the second half. A second goal from the penalty spot immediately on the resumption of play put Charnock on the way to a win but an almost comical goal conceded by Charnock a few minutes later meant that the result of the game was in doubt right up to the final whistle.

Once again there were further changes to the Charnock line up. Mike Fletcher had departed to play for Nelson but Hayton was available after expecting to have to work. Fisher was back in midfield. Jamie Sanderson started at right back and took the captain’s arm band. Roberts was on the bench. John Sanderson injured his knee again in the warm up so although he was named as a substitute he was not fit to play.

Another mild afternoon with some winter sunshine provided ideal conditions for the game.

Fleetwood started playing towards the Fylde Road end.

Charnock made a great start and only a number of excellent saves from Wilkinson in the home goal stopped them from taking the lead. An early cross from the right caused all sorts of problems for Fleetwood and only a defensive header over the bar relieved the situation. The resulting corner saw Hayton just beaten to the header and a second corner saw the same result but the ball came to Jamie Sanderson his shot was diverted goalwards

by Grimshaw inside the six yard box but Wilkinson was still alert enough to turn the ball away. Another cross from the left caused further problems in the home goal area. Burrows was brought down on the edge of the area but the free kick was wide of the goal. A O’Farrell free kick to the back post saw Grimshaw’s header from close range turned away by the home keeper. Fleetwood were competing and producing some good football in midfield but the Charnock defence was looking very resolute. Charnock finally took the lead on 40 minutes Nolan centred from the left and Burrows in front of goal helped the ball on to GRIMSHAW at the back post. His first attempt to score was a mis-kick but he still had time to knock the ball beyond the keeper at his second attempt. On the stroke of half time Jamie Sanderson struggled to control a ball and just when it looked as if a shooting chance was materialising Hayton was in to nick the ball away.

Charnock at the start of the second half got just the boost that they were looking for. A Nolan cross from the right was nodded down by Grimshaw and Fisher was bundled off the ball just as he was about to shoot. GRIMSHAW scored from the spot. Charnock were looking relatively comfortable but it all changed on 55 minutes a badly sliced defensive clearance was on its way out for a corner Bates came out to try and collect the ball but although he stopped the ball crossing the bye line he scooped the ball to Buckley who netted from a fine angle. Game on.

Fleetwood were revitalised and Charnock had to be on their toes. Despite a number of attacks goal chances for the home side did not materialise whilst Charnock looked dangerous at the other end of the pitch. A second yellow card for Hoy saw Fleetwood reduced to 10 men on 66 minutes. Burrows got clear but failed to beat the advancing Wilkinson and when a good move down the left resulted in Prout being set up his shot was weak and did not trouble the keeper.

The final 10 minutes saw Charnock drop back which all teams seem to do when defending a one goal lead but Fleetwood, despite some neat football, failed to really trouble Bates.

This was Charnock’s best performance for some time.

POULTON TOWN 1 CHARNOCK RICHARD 1West Lancashire League Premier DivisionSaturday 21St November 2009

Team: Kevin Baldwin, Phil Jackson, Andy Battersby, Mark Kerr, Tony Hartley, David Prout, Andy Roberts (Jordan Wilson 64), Alex Randell, David Dempsey (Damian Dashti 72), Chris Robinson, John Sanderson. SUBS: (Not Used) Mark Chester.

A very even, hard fought game looked as if it was going to finish goalless but there were two goals in injury time, Randell scoring from the penalty spot, one minute into added time before Poulton equalised in the fifth minute of added time.

After another unsettled week it was touch and go whether this game could go ahead but despite rain falling throughout the game the pitch played very well and the decision to play the match was correct.

Charnock were again missing several regular players, both strikers Carl Grimshaw and Liam Hayton were out with injuries as was Danny Grimshaw, Jimmy King was away and James Price was working. Chris Robinson joined Sanderson up front and new signing David Dempsey came in on the left. Tony Hartley started at left back in place of Stewart Howson who had joined Chorley.

There was a strong wind blowing diagonally across the pitch and Charnock playing towards the clubhouse end in the first half were at a disadvantage.

Poulton set the early pace as both teams struggled to get to grips with the conditions and Charnock were on the defensive as Poulton took advantage of the wind. There were 14 minutes on the clock before Charnock really threatened with Robinson working a great position down the left but his centre was headed away. There was then a burst of activity when Sanderson put a nice chip into the area but the ball was scrambled away. Then Robinson burst clear and was tripped from

behind, Charnock were awarded a free kick but the referee took no further action. The free kick finished up with Prout putting in a great centre that the keeper needed two attempts to collect. Baldwin needed to get down to turn a strong shot around the post. After a slow start the game was seeing increasing incident.

It was not a day for neat passing football as both sides struggled to carve out any clear chances. The second half saw much of the same fare. Charnock now had the wind assisting them and posed much more of a threat but Poulton saw plenty of the ball and Kerr and Battersby needed to stand strong at the back and Kevin Baldwin dealt with everything that they missed. Charnock almost scored on 55 minutes, a well worked free kick saw a cross shot fly just past the far post. Then Battersby got too much of his head on a good free kick from the right and the ball sailed over the bar. Charnock had a good spell of attacking but Poulton fought back and the game remained very even. Charnock lost skipper Andy Roberts through injury with Jordan Wilson coming on to play up front with Robinson out on the left.

Another Charnock free kick caused a panic in the home defence but there was no-one on hand to turn the ball home. Then Kerr found himself clear but he failed to find the target. To be fair he looked to be off-side but there was no flag. As 90 minutes approached it looked as if the game would finish as a draw but both sides kept plugging away and in the first minute of added time Robinson running onto a ball in the area was fouled and ALEX RANDELL gave Charnock the lead from the penalty spot. It was now just a case of Charnock keeping the ball and preventing Poulton from equalising. However in the fifth minute of added time a long throw into the Charnock penalty area caused confusion and the ball was driven home from close range. The referee finished up playing seven minutes added time which it was difficult understand as there had not been that many stoppages in the second half.

T his 3-1 win over Bootle was another excellent performance from Charnock Richard and the

resulting three points moved them up to fifth position in the league table. This was a really entertaining, fast paced game with both sides concentrating on football and consequently the referee did not have to issue any cautions. The Villagers took the lead midway through the half but it only lasted a few minutes before the visitors equalised. Charnock regained the lead shortly before the interval and added a third goal on the hour mark and despite Bootle applying pressure in the final half hour the victory never looked in doubt.

Following the 5-1 defeat by Lancaster City in the LFA Challenge Trophy on the previous Tuesday when a much changed team had been selected manager Ryan Donnellan, not surprisingly, reverted back to the line-up that started in the win over Whitchurch bar for two changes. Ascroft, unavailable on that occasion, returned in goal and the injured Fairhurst was replaced by Woods. With Regan also on the injury list and Bennett suspended youngsters Green and Morris from the reserves were on the bench alongside Oxley and the returning from injury Turner.

It was a fine evening the pitch was in excellent condition and there was an attendance of 148. Bootle won the toss so Charnock kicked off playing towards the Mawdesley Plantation end.

The game started at a fast tempo and continued at pace throughout the 90 minutes. Early on Woods got down the left and McGovern’s punch to his cross was poor but it fell to a defender. Then, when Bibby fed Davison he jinxed past a defender in the area before having the ball whipped off his toe just as he was about to shoot. At the other end O’Farrell blocked a Jones shot as the game went from end to end without either side being able to carve out a chance.

Davison delivered a couple of centres that were easily dealt with by the Bootle defence before another cross by Davison was brought down by Grimshaw but McGovern dealt comfortably with his shot. On 23 minutes Walker did well on the left and Darr turned in the area but his shot lacked power and it was an easy save for McGovern. Darr again chanced his arm from distance but again his shot lacked power. A corner for Bootle saw a header bounce on the roof of the net. Charnock took the lead on 27 minutes a O’Farrell pass was knocked on by Darr and Davison was again into the

area and this time his left foot shot beat McGovern and found the net just inside the left hand post.

Bootle responded with Hughes almost getting on the end of a cross from the right by Foy and they levelled the scores on 32 minutes, a cross from the left to beyond the far post resulted in a header back for Jones to score from close range. The Villagers retook the lead on 38 minutes after a Woods pass found YOUNG and he hit an accurate shot just inside the left hand post. Bootle again responded and Ascroft had to turn a Carberry shot away for a corner. The game remained very even right up to the whistle for half time.

The visitors, as could be expected, made a lively start to the second half and Griffith blocked a Hughes shot. Darr twice did well to get to the bye-line but both times lost out to defenders and a cross from Davison was cut out by McGovern. Holding on to their slender lead continued to be Charnock’s main objective but the situation changed on 57 minutes when Charnock increased their lead, a shot from the edge of the area by HAYDOCK beat McGovern. Bootle responded by making their first of three substitutions over the next 13 minutes.

The 60 minutes mark saw Grimshaw hit the side netting from an angle from which it looked impossible to score.

Bootle’s almost reduced the arrears on 63 minutes, Ascroft doing well to get down and turn a Peers’ header around the post. When Davison again cut in along the right hand bye-line McGovern turned his shot away using both feet. The visitors were now pressing, the home defence did really well and Bootle resorted to shooting from distance and mostly missing the target. On 74 minutes a neat attack from Charnock put Haydock in, McGovern made a brave dive at his feet, but it was all in vain as he was offside. When substitute Loughlin had a shot from distance it was on target but Ascroft saved easily. On 80 minutes McGovern tipped a Grimshaw header over the bar. When Bottle did get the ball into the net on 85 minutes it was after an obvious push on O’Farrell. Walker had a chance to score on 86 minutes when fed by Grimshaw but his shot across goal went beyond the far post. Charnock made two late substitutions, Green for Woods and Oliver for Grimshaw. In the final minute of normal time McGovern made a fine save from Haydock before, after four minutes of added time, Charnock could celebrate another fine win.

W e in the reserves management team would like to extend a warm welcome tonight to the players, officials and

fans of Padiham. We hope you enjoy your visit and have a safe journey home afterwards.

We also wish good luck to the players and management of the Charnock first team. Especially Danny Nolan on his debut as part of the management set up. Danny has been a regular for us this season and we will miss his experience but it’s a wonderful opportunity and we wish him all the best.

After getting back to winning ways last week, we had a another home game this Saturday against a tough Kendal United side. Their results have been quite good this year, especially on the road so we knew we would have to perform.

Usually it takes a side travelling from the lakes area a while to settle but Kendal started very well and it took us 5 minutes to get a touch of the ball. When we did we started to play the better football and got ourselves on top.

We opened the scoring through Danny Nolan, hitting the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Must have been the shooting practice he was doing before the game…we pressed on and created enough chances to finish the game in the first half.

We did score another, an inadvertent assist allowed Liam McNally to coolly slot home another of a productive season for him so far. We didn’t take any of the numerous chances and 5 minutes before half time we had our first experience of the sin bin and were down to 10 men.

The other lads worked extremely hard either side of half time to ensure we weren’t punished with a goal against us and as we got our full side back we pressed to finish the game.

The third goal was a great volley into the bottom corner from Scott Hendy. He came to us late in the season but has really found his form, putting his 12th of the season away. That should have been game over.

However a defensive lapse gave Kendal a penalty and they pulled the score back to 3-1 shortly after. The lads who came off the bench for us did a brilliant job and we saw the match out. We were under some pressure but the lads were strong and we created a few chances on the break

We try to keep the performances and results coming when we travel to Garstang tomorrow, which looks like another tough test. If you need a further football fix after tonight, we would be happy to see you there, 7:45 ko weather permitting

O ne of the main objectives of many clubs is to make their home ground a ‘fortress’, in other words win every

game if possible. Charnock, in recent seasons, has been proud to have one of the best pitches in the West Lancashire League and more recently the NWCL. Over recent seasons have the Villagers made the most of performing on a good playing surface? It is interesting to look at the statistics considering league games only.

Charnock Richard over the years have had some remarkable successes and their trophy cabinet justifies their claim to be one of the most successful clubs in Lancashire in the lower reaches of non-league football.

Prior to 2007 when first team football was played over on the pitch alongside the clubhouse there was often a distinct advantage for the club in that the pitch was extremely tight and visiting sides struggled to cope with the restricted space. However, Charnock were familiar with the lack of room down the wings and could take advantage. This was not always the case because if teams came to defend in depth their task was made much easier. From their promotion to the West Lancashire League in 1993 through to 2007 Charnock had a decent record in the league and their home performances were more than satisfactory to ensure that relegation was never threatened. Once they had moved over to the other side of Charter Lane, playing on the far larger pitch of Mossie Park, they became one of the most successful teams in the league and in their last few seasons up to their move in 2016 into the North West Counties League they lost very few games. In their last five seasons, 2011 to 2016, they were champions four times and in these seasons 74 home games were played and they only lost three league games with nine draws. In every season they won more points at home than away so you could say that Charnock made the most of playing at Mossie Park

Charnock are now in their fourth season in the NWCL competing at the highest level in their history

so has home form been important in their quest to establish themselves at this level?

In the 2016/7 season Charnock played 42 league games, of the 21 at home they won 13 with 3 matches drawn. The result was that only 42 points were won at home with 50 secured on opponents’ grounds.

In season 2017/8 Charnock again failed to really take full advantage of playing at Mossie Park as they lost six league games, once again they only won 13 out of 22 league games played and again there were three drawn games so 42 points collected, but at least they were more successful at home than away as they only won 37 points on their travels and finished in sixth place with 79 points.

Last season there were only 38 games, 19 at home, and the Villagers only recorded 10 home wins and not one drawn game so only 30 points were won at Mossie Park. They were marginally better at away venues winning 31 points.

So it appears that in the NWCL overall we have been more successful on the road than at home. Just think where we might have finished over the last three seasons if we had made Mossie Park a ‘Fortress’.

It is too early this season to come to any real conclusion but to date we have had five wins at home and been successful at three away locations.

***********************One important statistic that illustrates Charnock’s

success at Step-7 level was that over a season they went unbeaten in the league. Unfortunately it was the best part of one season into the third month of the following season so it does not make the same impact. On 22nd August 2012 Charnock lost 3-2 to visiting Fleetwood Hesketh but the 3-1 win on the following Saturday over visitors Thornton Cleveleys saw them remain unbeaten in the league for the rest of the season. They started the 2013/4 season on a winning note and their unbeaten record only came to an end at Crooklands Casuals where they lost 4-1 on 30th November 2013. During this period Charnock lost out in the Richardson Cup and were beaten in the Lancashire Amateur Shield Final. They also lost in the Amateur Shield the following season at Walshaw Sports.Keith Reader

Due to printing and editor deadlines I have to writethis final column of the season with four leaguegames outstanding so it is impossible to comment onCharnock’s final position in the table and, most importantly, where they will be playing their footballnext season. Will it be in the Premier Division by automatic promotion or through the play-offs ormaybe we will have to be satisfied with having a second season in Division One but whatever happensit has been a very successful and exciting first seasonin the North West Counties League.

This season saw Charnock make their debut in the FAVase and it has been very satisfactory but with a little bit ofluck it could have been even more successful. In the preliminary rounds we won at Whickham in the North Eastthen visited Yorkshire to beat Harrogate Railway Athletic. The First Round Proper saw a home tie against old opponents Barnoldswick Town which we won after extratime. The home defeat at Mossie Park at the hands ofStaveley Miners Welfare was largely due to having to fieldan understrength team; suspensions for Spencer Bibby,Josh Norgate and Mike Fletcher all made them ineligible,Ashley Young missed through a knee problem and thenlosing Danny Smith to injury before half time and a missedpenalty all contributed to the defeat. If we had won wewould have had a trip up to play South Shields of theNorthern League who are now through to the Wembleyfinal. At the time they were averaging gates of over 1200.Win or lose it would have been a bumper pay day for theclub with a share of the gate receipts and more FA money for reaching that stage of the competition. As it was Staveley made the journey, pocketed the money andlost 3-0.

Charnock were drawn away to Bamber Bridge in the firstround of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, it was ourdebut in the competition and against all the odds cameaway with a 2-0 win. Drawn away at Ashton Athletic in thenext round we had plenty of chances to win the game inthe first half but in the end lost 1-0. Ashton went on to win2-1 against Radcliffe Borough in the final at the MacronStadium after knocking out Chorley in the semi-final. A littlemore accuracy with our shooting at Ashton and who knowswhat could have happened? In our league cup debuts wemade early exits in both competitions. In the Macron Cupwe were unlucky to lose 2-1 at Handley Town, the winningpenalty being awarded for the ball hitting Josh Norgate’sshoulder. We successfully negotiated our way through theReusch First Division Cup to the quarter-finals where welost 4-1 at home to Widnes.

Football squads inevitably evolve over the years and anumber of new signings were made for this season. Some players have fitted in well and have made regularappearances others disappeared; several did not evenmake one appearance. Over previous seasons CarlGrimshaw and David Burrows formed a successful goalscoring partnership for the club. Last season they totalled77 goals between them and there was the expectancythat they would score a similar number this season. Unfortunately domestic problems resulted in Dave making himself unavailable and he has been sorely missed.

In the 2015-16 season Damian Dashti passed the landmark of 500 appearances for the first team and hehas continued to feature in most match squads this season. He is now approaching 550 appearances whichis another remarkable record of dedication to CharnockRichard FC. There have been other impressive performances by players this season but for me oneplayer has stood out above anyone else - Ross O’Farrellhas had an outstanding season to date. Ross is anotherplayer that has been at Charnock for almost all his career first appearing in the ‘A’ team back in season2007-08 from where he has worked his way up to become a regular in the first team squad. He is mychoice as “Player of the Year”.

Finally I must mention the support that the club have enjoyed both home and away. To date home attendanceshave only dropped below 100 once and the average sofar is 140. Everyone at the club has put in a remarkableamount of time and effort and come May we will be looking forward to our second season in the North WestCounties League. I hope to be writing this column againnext season, many thanks for reading it.
