Message from the Director

Friends. Thesedays it’s hard

to imagine sayingthat word withoutprefacing it with theword “Facebook”.Or sometimes theword “friend” nowis merely written inan acronym—asthe first “f” in the

text name “bff”. Through socialnetworking and such, it is certainly truethat a lot of us measure our friends inquantity these days. But we all reallyknow deep down that it’s the quality of thefriend, and the friendship, that is mostimportant, don’t we? We have been given the honor of takingE.B. White’s classic 1952 children’snovel, and breathing life into it on stage. The script we are using is very faithful tothe original work, and we have stayedfaithful as well. We’ve put a few musicalmoments in, which the script called foranyway, but the wonderful theme of thisstory----how very different beings can notonly strike up a friendship, but establishone so strong that it causes both friendsto willingly risk their own lives because oftheir love for each other---is here in itsunvarnished form. A “Children’s Story”?Maybe so, but one that you are never tooold to take lessons from. Planning for this production beganbefore the director and producer werechosen, and it’s taken almost every daysince to get this ready for production. Somany people to acknowledge, so littlespace! As a start, a big thanks goes outto the Board of Directors for trustingAngela and me with this valuable andbeloved production. Your faith hashopefully been rewarded. Auditions were two days of tough work, and I can’t express enough myappreciation for our Casting Committee(Ben Peck, Heather Brand, Carrie Shaw),as well as our audition crew, led by ourwonderful Assistant Director PamShoemaker (more on her later), and ahost of dedicated folks who kept thingsflowing smoothly. We had over 170 folksaudition, and wound up with a cast of 52,

that with some attrition has dropped to 49.If you’ve never experienced working anaudition, then you can’t fully appreciatethe TERRIFIC job these great volunteersdid. Greg Asbury has meant so much to thisshow, and to me personally, that anythingI write here will automatically understatehis efforts. His self-given moniker, “TheSound Geek”, does not even scratch thesurface of what he did for this production. From starting work in June on a sound &music plot, to getting us sound cues forour library performance in mid-July, tocreating a method for web-writing, towiring the stage for sound so that bodymics were not necessary, to creatingdecals to go onto the back of ourvehicles---and installing them, fordeveloping a method for doing lights andsound simultaneously without touchingeither board(!!!)—and so much more thathe will probably do after I write this, thankyou so much Greg! After Ben Peck helped us cast theshow, he got a crew together and built theset! I don’t have to go on and on aboutit---all you have to do is to look at it!Through the efforts of Ben, Rob Brinson,Coni Carey, Greg again!, Angel Cargle(mother of SOME PIG), and so manyothers, the set really takes you into thestory so well, and helps you to get lostinto this great story. Chuck Morris has lent his genius to usonce again in designing our lighting, which makes this beautiful set even moreRADIANT. Chuck really didn’t have thetime to work on this show, and the factthat he did anyway speaks volumes aboutthis man. Thanks also to Katherine Clonts& company for running the light board forus. Costumes for a show like this is achore, added to the fact that we did aperformance for the library in mid-July,and what you have is a potential stress-inducing situation. Enter BeckyMagruder, who handled all we gave her,and as with the set, you can see theresults yourself. Megan Keating creates beautiful artwork and graphics---that is a statement offact. Perhaps during this show she

Page 9: Charlotte's Web Program

7

created it in more ways than in anyprevious show ever. If we didn’t set therecord, we sure came close. And shealways did it, timely and fabulously, asshe always does. The main culprit in giving Megan allthis work was our Promotions Manager,Naomi Williams. Naomi started workinglong ago, before auditions, and literallynever stopped, picking up help in themagnificent Tina Brinson along the way.It is such a great feeling to know that youcan totally depend on people to getthings done if you stay out of their way,and I had this feeling with Naomi andTina. You have heard about this show, otherwise you wouldn’t be here, and I’mpretty certain that 99% of you heardabout it because of their efforts. Inaddition, Tina raised funds, they bothplanned publicity events, and it’s hard tothink of where we would have beenwithout them. I choose not to. Carol Murchland , in the middle ofProducing Dracula, handled our propsfor us, and did her usual excellent job. I am starting to get a reputation forbreaking in first-time stage managers. The list is now one longer with MaryAsbury. Mary and her crew have workedso hard to make this show run smoothly, and the added bonus is that you will seea few of them on stage—on purpose! This is a big cast, of all ages, and Maryhas done a splendid job of handling thisnot-so-easy task. Don Rusaw came in late to the game, and helped with some needed characterdevelopment with some of our youngeractors, and his efforts are greatlyappreciated.

My “trusty sidekick,” Pam Shoemaker, already mentioned in this story, hasbeen everything a Director could ask forin an Assistant Director. Pam, you aremy first choice going forward foranything I foolishly decide to direct in thefuture. I cannot imagine this showwithout you, and I hope you know whatan impact you had on this production. I’ve already stated my lifetimeallegiance to my Producer, and wife,Angela. As a director, I want no otherProducer, and as a man, I want no otherwife. Through a very trying summerpersonally, Angela has been absolutelytremendous. Without slighting the manytalented people we have in house, thereis in my mind no better Producer ofchildren’s shows than Angela, and I amso grateful to her for being in my show, and more importantly, in my life. This cast of ours, and the families thataccompany them to rehearsals andshows, is a mixed bag of very young andnot so young, show veterans andnewcomers, and it has been my greatprivilege to work with all. They haveworked very hard since early June tobring this story to life, and I am so proudof them. Finally, thank you for being here. There is a LOT to do in Rome in lateAugust and early September, and I amHUMBLED that you have chosen tospend some time with us today. I hopeyou will leave this theatre entertainedand inspired, and happy that you came.

This past year, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation was created to help securefunding to restore the DeSoto Theatre to its former splendor. With assistance from the FoxTheatre Institute, the tireless work of many volunteers and generous donations from ourmembers and friends, the rehabilitation process has begun with the repair of the ornateplasterwork in the vestibule and the complete remodeling of the upstairs meeting rooms.Although much has been done, many more restoration projects are needed.

Don Schlitz (Homer Zuckerman)How amazingly fortunate I feel! Being apart of Annie was so very special. Thecast was outstanding and Annie, theorphans, and the other young actorswere incredibly talented and it was funworking with them. Joseph and theAmazing Technicolor Dreamcoatturned into an awesome show! Being"Jacob" was a privilege and one heckof a lot of fun! Once again the cast wasincredible and I learned from someoutstanding actors. The directors andproducers of both of these showsbrought out the best in each and everyactor. To now play the role of "Homer"in Charlotte’s Web is just frosting onthe cake! The "Jones Team" obviouslyenjoys developing young actors (andsome more mature ones as well) andthese young boys and girls are playingtheir roles like they own them. Anydoubts I had of playing just one of fouradult roles in a show with a show castwith several dozen young actors, all ofthem stars, vanished as I met and gotto know these outstanding youngsters!"Rome Little Theatre" has a greatfuture as these young professionalsgrow! How proud and happy I am to bepart of "Rome Little Theatre!"
