Transcript of Charlie houston robotics
Current Situation• Joint blood sciences laboratory reception• No automation• 3000 Haematology/Biochemistry samples /day• Floor space 90m2
• May have up to 12 staff members working in it• Currently occupied with data entry terminals
centrifuges and bench space
2
OPTIONS1. Continue as we are – status quo
2. Refer excess work to another site
3. Total laboratory automation
4. Automate pre/post analytical
3
OPTION 2Refer excess work to another site
Not an option for above reasons
•2 other labs in division•Could take in GP work geographically close to them•These labs are already overstretched and cannot meet their own expected increase in demand
5
OPTION 3
Total laboratory automation
Not an option for above reasons
Not a current option due to having recently agreed contracts for stand alone –Immunoassay analyzersBiochemistry analyzersHaematology analyzersWhich do not run out for 5 years – tied into these by reagent rental deals
6
Option 4
•Centrifugation•Decapping •Alliquoter•Allocation to suitable analysis area•Re-capping•Archiving
Automate pre & post analytical
Favoured Option 7
SWOT analysisSTRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
• Reduction of error due to less human interaction
• Increase patient safety
• Able to cope with increasing service demand
• Reduction off revenue spend
• Decreased turnaround times
• Best use of current equipment
• Staff reluctant to change working practices
• Samples still have to be transported from main reception area to analysers
• Maintenance, service contracts, troubleshooting, training etc.
• Has ongoing revenue cost -consumables
OPPORTUNITIES THREATS • Increasing skill mix
• Improved job satisfaction
• Utilisation of staff at correct AfC banding
• Cross fertilization of ideas between departments
• Easier to implement “lean” laboratory processes.
• Staff may feel threatened by potential job loss
• Change management has to be effective for the process to work

SWOT analysis of pre/post analytical systems available in the United Kingdom
Pre /Post analytical system
Strengths Weakness Opportunities Threats
•Gensis FE500 Compatible with current analysers and interface (AMS)
• No recapper• Maximum capacity
only 80 tubes
• Chance to have some automation at a lower capital cost
• Requires manual capping
• Limited capacity may not cope with predicated workload increase
•ACCELERATOR Automatic Processing System (APS)
Compatible with current analysers and interface (AMS)Good sample throughput
• Large footprint• More suited to track
system (TLA)
• Foil recapper very robust can be used for send aways
• Built in storage
• Would require major expenditure by estates on reconfiguration of laboratory
•ADVIA LabCell and ADVIA WorkCell VersaCell™ StreamLAB
Good all round laboratory analysers system
• Not Compatible with current analysers and interface (AMS)
• No aliquotter
• Only to be considered if replacing analysers
• Large capital Outlay for new analysers
•Automate Compatible with current analysers Very good sample throughputMaximum functionality into smallest footprint
• Requires interfacing • Expensive conductive
aliquot tips• Centrifuge not
available
• Possibility of integrating other blood sciences
• Able to centrifugation off line
• Full specimen audit trail
• Reliance on expensive consumables

Pre /Post analytical system
Strengths Weakness Opportunities Threats
enGen™ Compatible with current analysers
• Requires interfacing• More suited to track
system (TLA)
• Possibility of integrating other blood sciences
• Able to add centrifuge
• Would require major expenditure by estates on reconfiguration of laboratory
Modular Pre-analytics (MPA)
Compatible with current analysers
• Requires interfacing• Only compatible with
a limited range of tube sizes
• Only compatible with one type of cap for decapper
• More suited to track system (TLA)
• Possibility of integrating other blood sciences
• Able to add centrifuge
• Would require major expenditure by estates on reconfiguration of laboratory
PVS Sample Distribution System
Compatible with current analysers
• Requires interfacing• Centrifuge not
available
• Possibility of integrating other blood sciences
• Able to centrifugation off line
• Only works with Sarstedt tubes
• Would require changing our blood collection system
