LANSING — The Department of Natu-
ral Resources reminds anglers that a newlicense season began April 1. Anglers
have a choice of a variety of licenses andprices are unchanged from 2011. Fishing
license options include:
* 24-hour license (good for all species).* 72-hour license (good for all species).
* Season-long restricted license (goodfor all species except trout, salmon, lake
sturgeon, lake herring, amphibians, rep-tiles or crustaceans).
* Season-long, all-species license (good
for all species). An additional (free) lakesturgeon tag is required of anglers who
fish for or target lake sturgeon.
Fishing license dollars fund a variety of
activities, including fish managementwork on Michigan’s waters, habitat reha-
bilitation and protection, fish stocking, information distribution, education and
outreach efforts to anglers and the public,
and much more. Fisheries Division doesnot receive any general funds and de-
pends on angler dollars, through licensesales and federal excise tax dollars for
fishing tackle, to manage Michigan’s fish-eries. Buying a fishing license even if you
do not plan to fish can make a big differ-
ence to the future health of Michigan’sprized freshwaters.
There are three simple ways to pur-
chase a fishing license in Michigan:
Visit your local license retailer or DNROperations Service Center and make a
purchase in person.Use the E-License system to buy a li-
cense online 24 hours a day, seven days a
week. Just visit www.mdnr-elicense.comto get started.
Visit the Mobile Fish website on yoursmartphone (www.mi.gov/fish) to buy a
24-hour all-species fishing license. All youneed is your driver’s license number and
a credit or debit card.

ing.
LANSING — Department of Natural
Resources Director Rodney Stokes in-formed the Natural Resources Commis-
sion at its April meeting that the DNR
was lowering many fees at state forestcampgrounds to align them more closely
with fees at state parks and recreationareas offering similar amenities.
Most state forest campgrounds willhave a $13 per site, per night fee rate (a
reduction of $2). Campgrounds identifiedas equestrian state forest campgrounds,
those associated with ORV trails, and the
semi-modern Houghton Lake state forestcampground will charge a $17 per site,
per night rate (a reduction of $3).Rates for group camps - identified ei-
ther as a canoe camp, trail camp, orgroup camp - will remain at a fee of $6
per person, per night, while cabins re-
main at the $65 per night fee.Approximately 270 campsites at a vari-
ety of state forest campgrounds spread
over 11 counties can be reserved throughthe state’s on-line reservation system.
For more information, visit www.midnr-reservations.com.
“The goal is to create a quality atmos-phere for a rustic camping experience in
state forest campgrounds at an appropri-ate fee,” said Ron Olson, DNR Parks and
Recreation chief. “Also new this year will
be the requirement to purchase a Recre-ation Passport to access all state forest
campgrounds, in addition to Michiganstate parks, recreation areas, and state-
administered boating access fee sites.”The Recreation Passport, which re-
placed motor vehicle permits, is also re-
quired at non-motorized state trail park-ing areas. This new way to fund
Michigan’s outdoor recreation opportuni-
ties helps preserve state forest camp-grounds, trails, and historic and cultural
sites in state parks. Also, the Passportwill improve funding for state park infra-
structure and rehabilitation and providepark development grants to local commu-
nities.The Michigan Department of Natural
Resources is committed to the conserva-
tion, protection, management, use andenjoyment of the state’s natural and cul-
tural resources for current and futuregenerations. For more information, go to

By Amy Speigl, Sub-stance Abuse Prevention
Educator, Health Depart-ment of Northwest
MichiganSpring is an exciting
time of year for highschool students. For
many of our area high
schools, prom and gradu-ation are right around
the corner. Along withthese exciting events, par-
ents and caring adultsshould be aware that the
end of the school year is
also a high-risk time forunderage drinking. In
fact, statistics show thatone third of the alcohol
related fatalities involv-ing teens occur duringprom and graduation sea-
son. However, being in-formed and prepared can
keep our children safe. That is why the Michigan
Department of Commu-
nity Health (MDCH) is en-couraging all adults to
“Do Your Part” to preventunderage drinking.
Although most teenswill choose not to drink,
according to the Michi-
gan Youth Risk BehaviorSurvey, 69% of Michigan
high school students ingrades 9 through 12 re-
ported having at least onedrink during their life-
time. So, how can you “Do
Your Part” to prevent al-cohol use among teens?
Set clear rules aboutnot drinking and conse-
quences for breakingthem.
Help your kids identify
alcohol-free activities oroffer to host an alcohol-
free post prom or gradua-tion party.
Talk to other parentsabout post-event activi-
ties to ensure alcohol
won’t be present.Remind them never to
get in the car with a
driver who has beendrinking.
April is Alcohol Aware-
ness month, and the per-
fect time to have aconversation with your
children about the dan-gers of underage drink-
ing. All concerned
community members cantake part in local Alcohol
Awareness Month activi-ties during the month of
April. Visit www.michi-gan.gov/mdch-bsaas to
find local events or Town
Hall Meetings.
Do Your Partto Prevent
Underage Drinking
While most wells pro-
vide a clean, safe supply of water, there is always a
chance that you could
have contaminants pollut-ing your system. Your
water may be crystal clearand still contain
pathogens, microbes,and/or bacteria that is
harmful to your health.
That’s why the U.S Envi-ronmental Protection
Agency recommends get-ting your well water tested
annually. The best time to
test water is in the springfollowing a rainy period.
“Unlike public watersystems, there are no
water quality monitoringrequirements for private
wells, and many never get
tested,” said ScottKendzierski, Director of
Environmental HealthServices for the Health De-
partment of Northwest
Michigan. “It is up to wellowners to make sure their
drinking water is safe forconsumption. Fortunately,
it’s easy, quick, and inex-pensive to test drinking
water.”Sometimes, more fre-
quent water testing is rec-
ommended. For example,it is important to test for
nitrate in the early monthsof a pregnancy, before
bringing an infant homefrom the hospital, and
again during the first six
months of his/her life.Other reasons for more
frequent testing are water
taste, odor and staining is-sues. And if you have hada chemical or fuel spill or
leak near your water sup-
ply, get your water testedright away.
Well water originates asrain and snow that then
filters into the ground. Asit soaks through the soil
and rock, the water can
dissolve materials that are
present on or in the
ground, becoming contam-inated. Some contami-
nants are naturally
occurring from rocks andsoils and commonly occur
in well water at unsafe lev-els. Surface water and
groundwater can changeover time, sometimes rap-
idly, which can affect the
quality of the drinkingwater supplied by an on-
site well. Even if you findyour water is safe, testing
on a regular basis is a
good way to establish awater quality record and
maintain your well sys-tem.
If after testing you findthat there are issues that
need to be corrected, you
can use this data to makean informed decision
about any remedial actionis needed, such as inspect-
ing the well to find the
cause of the contamina-tion, having the well chlo-
rinated, affecting wellconstruction improve-
ments or modifying awater filtration/purifica-
tion system.“Making sure your
water is safe by testing it
regularly is one of thesimplest things you can do
to take care of the healthand well being of yourself
and those you care about,”said Kendzierski.
Two types of well water
testing kits are availablefor a nominal fee at Health
Department offices in
Antrim, Charlevoix,Emmet, and Otsego coun-ties. The fee for the Bacte-
riological (Coliform)
Sampling Kit, which testsfor the presence of E coli
and other bacteria, is $16.The Partial Chemistry
Sampling Kit tests fluo-ride, chloride, hardness,
iron, sodium, sulfates, ni-
trites and nitrates, is $18.
Tests are analyzed at the
Health Department’s
Northern Michigan Re-gional Laboratory in Gay-
lord, so results aregenerally available within
two to three days.Analysis reveals the
level at which any of the
tested substances werefound in your water sam-
ple. The mere presence of these contaminants in well
water does not necessarilyimply that there is a prob-
lem. However, when levels
exceed state or federal
health standards or recom-
mended action levels, youshould take steps to cor-
rect the situation. If needed, Health Depart-
ment EnvironmentalHealth staff can provide
free consultation to help
you develop a plan to re-solve the problem.
The Health Departmentof Northwest Michigan is
mandated by the MichiganPublic Health Code to pro-
mote wellness, prevent dis-
ease, provide quality
healthcare, address health
problems of vulnerablepopulations, and protect
the environment for theresidents and visitors of
Antrim, Charlevoix,Emmet, and Otsego coun-
ties. For additional infor-
mation about well watertesting, visit

ment office.

Question & Answers AboutSelling Real Estate
Part 4 of 4
Living areaAnother surface you
should consider getting
professionally cleaned is
living room upholstery. It
can be tricky to know ex-
actly how to deep-clean
different types of fabrics,
especially if there are
stains you can’t quite
identify. Costs vary widely
depending on the size of
the furniture piece and
the quality and state of its
covering, but a typical
sofa might run $70 to $90.
Microfiber cloths are
great to use in the living
area as well. Make sure
you have cloths for each
area of the house, though,
so you’re not cross-conta-
minating bathroom,
kitchen, and living areas.
Use a damp microfiber
cloth to wipe down win-
dows, wood, mirrors, the
tops of bookshelves, ceil-
ing fan blades, and even
the plastic housing of
electronics for a quick,
chemical-free clean.
