The staff and I look forward to continuing the close working relationship we have with all our families to ensure that all of our students have the best opportunities to improve their learning. Please ensure you keep track of what’s happening this term by observing the calendar in each week’s newsletter. It has the dates for many of the activities that the children will experience. This calendar will be up-dated regularly with additions and changes as they occur. Special thanks to our wonderful P&C and staff who worked tirelessly at the Bunnings BBQ last Sunday. Just over $1000 was raised for our students. A huge amount of tasty sausages and cool drinks were sold!! Fundraising For Farmers! What a great way to finish the term raising money for our farmers. Just over $650 was raised and went to “Buy a Bale.” It was fantastic to see the students in Yrs 4, 5 and 6 make the games as part of their Project Based Learning and then everyone join in excitedly to play them. “On the last day of term Yrs 4, 5 and 6 made lots of activities in Project Based Learning. Some of them included marble races, putt putt golf, basketball shooting, snooker, box maze, quoits and hole in one/two. Everyone had lots of fun. We dressed up as farmers to raise money for ‘Buy a Bale.’ We saw many smiles on children’s faces.” By Breeze. Assembly Due to swim school, assembly will be held at 12:20pm this Friday 19 October and next week Friday 26 October. Ukulele Festival It’s on this Sunday at Newcastle City Hall at 10.15am. Come and see our wonderful Uke troupe as they tiptoe through the tulips! Thanks so much Mrs Walsh and our amazing Uke Troupe! Interns Last term our three interns, Miss Scott, Mr Gilbert and Miss Zalasinski completed their internship at CPS. We were indeed extremely fortunate to watch their growth and be part of their final teaching experience before becoming “officially” a teacher. Congratulations to all three for your wonderful contributions to our school and we hope to have you working at our school this term. Absences Parents are reminded that the law states every day a child has absent from school must be explained. It would be appreciated if parents send in a written note when their child returns from an absence. Currently there are some students who have less than 75% attendance. This equates with almost 40 days off this year. That is a huge chunk of missed learning.

Congratulations to the following students for their 100%: Josie, Ale-Xander, Yandi, William, Finn, Angelia and Oliver-Henry.

The next students have 99% attendance for the year: Anabelle, Alexander, Marcus, Vuk, Brodie, James S, Eliza, Monique, Lachlan B, Jade and Davie.

98% for the year is also a great achievement: Alexander J, Mackenzie, Ryan, Lukas, Cameron, Paige, Angelique, Ewan, Jasper F, Lachlan W, Caelee, Quinn, Tobias, Maddie S, Jasper G, Chelsea, Kalom, Jayda, Ava and Jack J.

School Swimming Scheme Just a reminder that swim school has started this week and will run for the rest of this week and next week. All students in Years 2-6 are expected to attend. Students need to bring swimmers, a towel and a plastic bag for wet clothes each day. Your child might like to also bring goggles or a swim cap. Please make sure all belongings are labelled with your child’s name. Yr 6 Farewell Parent Meeting The Yr 6 farewell is a fun event organised by Years 5 and 6 parents and teachers. The date for the farewell is Monday 17 December held at the school hall. An official invitation will be sent home later in the term. We will be holding a parent meeting on Wednesday 24 October at 3:15 in Yr 5/6 classroom. At this meeting we will organise the decorations, catering, costings and cake for the farewell. If you are unable to come but would like to contribute please contact the office.

Learning Is About Discovering and Trying New Things When discussing the value of learning with your child, ask them “What makes a good learner?” Talk about qualities such as being curious, determined, hard-working, risk taking, willing to have a go at something new, ready to be ok with making a mistake, ready to keep trying until they master it. Discuss how important it is to learn from our mistakes. Sometimes trying and learning new things makes us feel anxious and afraid, but if we never try to do things which we don’t know how to do, we will only ever know what we know now! That would be very sad. Children need to know that learning requires involvement and commitment in the task. Sometimes it may require support from an adult e.g. learning to ride a bike can be a difficult task when attempting it alone, but with the support and encouragement of an adult and with commitment and persistence from the

child, success can be celebrated and shared together. I hope you can invest in your child and take the time to share the exciting opportunities that learning can bring together. Hall Of Fame It is that time of year again where we are asking for nominations for the CPS Hall of Fame. The nominations are of ex-students of CPS who made an outstanding achievement in their field. Please think hard as the nominations need to be in by the end of Week 2 Term 4 (26 October)

Coffee and Chat This Thursday our coffee afternoon continues with Miss Jodie and I. We look forward to seeing you at 2:45pm.

Enjoy your week! Jayne Thompson Principal Year 7 2020 Selective High Schools

KT Wow, are we in Term 4 already? The year is flying by here in KT! The children were all excited to share their wonderful holiday stories and have returned refreshed and eager to dive straight back into their learning.

Last term we started to learn about coding and we were able to successfully code our Bee-Bots to move forwards, backwards, right, left and to pause at spots. KT students worked really hard to understand coding and have been really enjoying showing off their skills to their peers as well as to their families at the Father’s Day breakfast last term.

We have already had a busy start to the term with Kindergarten orientation visits starting next week. In L3 reading groups we are focusing on tracking with our eyes and using expression when we are reading, so we don’t sound like robots. We are continuing to work hard in maths and we are getting very good at solving addition and subtraction problems and telling the time to the o’clock. Please ensure your child has the opportunity to read their home reader and fast words every night so that they are able to see a progress with their reading levels. Keep working hard KT.

HELP NEEDED We’re going to need LOTS of help at the fete. Children must be supervised by a parent/carer at all times during the fete. If every family does a shift during the fete, everyone will have a chance to spend time with their own children. We have lots of fun attractions for you to help on, to choose which activity and shift you want to volunteer at, you can sign up at this link: https://www.volunteersignup.org/YYE7Y. This link is also on the school Facebook page and will be sent out on the Skoolbag app. It would be appreciated if you could sign up as soon as possible. We also have lots of tasks that need to be done prior to the fete too if you can help beforehand.

DONATIONS NEEDED We are needing families to donate inexpensive novelty toys, like novelty erasers, toy cars, stationary sets etc, to have as prizes for the Sideshow Alley games. Items must be new. It would be appreciated if students could bring all donations to their classroom in the morning on Friday 2nd November where Year 6 students will collect them. On Friday 2nd November, we’re also having an out of uniform day and asking for chocolates to be donated for the Lob a Choc game. Again, Year 6 students will collect these in the morning.

If you have any questions about the fete, you can contact the fete committee at [email protected]
