Connecting People to their Parks

Page 2: Charleston Parks Conservancy 2010 Annual Report

Our deep-rooted mission to increase the quality, aware-ness, appreciation and usage of Charleston’s parks and greenspaces can be seen in the Conservancy’s progress in 2010. The Conservancy is in a unique position through our private-public partnerships with the City of Charleston and the diverse Charleston community to focus local interest and resources in giving back to one of Charleston’s most important assets, our parks.

Beautification and education continued to develop in 2010 as the key programming elements defining the Conser-vancy’s place within the community. Park Renovations and Garden in the Parks, two major beautification programs, are meeting the challenges of enhancing our parks and green-spaces while at the same time ensuring for their long-term success through quality care. The desire to learn more about our parks, nature and gardening is being met through the Conservancy’s newest program, Educate You.

One of the most visible successes in 2010 came through the unveiling of a new park signage system spearheaded and funded by the Conservancy’s efforts. This successful Conservancy-City of Charleston collaboration established clear direction in one of the Conservancy’s first major

From our Chairman of the Board and our Executive Director

initiatives, to provide a clear and creative direction to signing all parks in the system. The Conservancy logo, located on the right hand side of any new park sign, speaks to our continued commitment to ongoing care from the Conservancy and our volunteer core, the Charleston Park Angels.

Engaging the Charleston community to become more active in our parks and greenspaces continued as 470 Park Angels gave over 1500 hours throughout the year. This was also seen through friendraising and fundraising events such as the Teddy Bear Picnic, the Colonial Lake Christmas Tree Renovation and the highly successful Party for the Parks, the Conservancy’s first major event fundraiser held at Colonial Lake.

From the Board of Trustees and the Conservancy staff, we thank you for your past and continued support in helping connect people to our parks.

On behalf of the City of Charleston and the Departments of Parks and Recreation, I am pleased to join with the Charleston Parks Conservancy to pres-ent its first annual report and to recognize the key role it plays in nurturing Charleston’s parks.

The Conservancy, in a few short years, has engaged the Charleston community in actively supporting the parks in exciting new ways. Twelve ongoing park and greenspace projects

From Mayor Riley, City of Charleston

are tangible avenues for the Conservancy’s volunteer core, the Park Angels, to give back in their communities. While the City manages our parks with the resources available, the Conservancy continues to act as a catalyst in bringing new resources. The completed conceptual master plan for Colonial Lake, a new park signage system, and a new entrance garden to Cannon Park are but a few diverse examples of the Conservancy’s unique ability to fund enhancements to our parks over and above what the City might be able to accomplish without their efforts.

The Charleston Parks Conservancy, while a young nonprofit organization, continues to establish itself as a model public-private partnership. Their work promotes the long-term health and vitality of the parks we all love. It is my belief that the quality of a city is directly related to the quality of its parks. The Conservancy’s mission helps make that possible through their continued work in our community. Best wishes as we move forward, striving to make our City greener and greater.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley

MISSION

The Charleston Parks Conservancy’s mission is clear: To increase the quality, awareness, appreciation and usage of Charleston’s parks and greenspaces.

HISTORY

The Charleston Parks Conservancy is a nonprofit organization founded in May 2007 by philanthropist and native born South Carolinian, Darla Moore, and supported by a regional base of horticultural professionals. We are a new organization with a timeless goal. We are a conduit through which Charleston’s rich horticultural history meets continued beautification. With our roots in history and our eyes on the future, we work to provide for our parks the same level of respect and preservation that we already give our great city.

VISION

Charleston’s parks are one of the highlights of our city. Beautiful parks can improve property values, promote community, attract tourists, help the environment, and improve public health with free and useful recreational opportunities. The Charleston Parks Conservancy strives to fulfill our vision that Charleston’s parks benefit everyone.

The Conservancy defines its approach to improving our city’s parks through collaborative efforts. Through our public-private partnership with the City of Charleston Parks Department, we improve parks with renovations, maintain parks throughout the city, and help to keep Charleston’s parks some of the finest in the nation.

We seek to rally support and pride from city communities and neighborhood associations to work towards a common goal of connecting people to their parks.

Park Signage ProjectBeautificationThe Conservancy’s success in beautifying our parks and greenspaces is at the core

of what we do as an organization. Two key components in these park beautification initiatives include Park Renovations and

Garden in the Parks. Together these programs offer the community a gateway to park improvements that are sustained

through the ongoing care of our staff and Park Angel volunteer force.

Creating a new park signage system was one of the original goals for the Conservancy. Championing

the City of Charleston’s first Parks and Greenspace Signage System Guideline Document, this goal was realized with a City approved design and

new signs going up all over town. Windermere Boulevard Community Garden was one of the first

greenspaces to see the new signs placed in early 2010.

Page 7: Charleston Parks Conservancy 2010 Annual Report

CANNON PARK ENTRANCE GARDEN

Located at the intersection of Calhoun St. and Rutledge Ave., Cannon Park serves as a meeting ground for many diverse groups living, working and playing in the surround-ing areas including MUSC, the College of Charleston and local neighbors. In the first phase of a larger renovation project slated for Cannon Park, the Conservancy and Park Angel volunteers installed a new median garden and entrance garden in April. The planting focused on hardy drought tolerant shrubs and perennials that would flower at least 9 months out of the year.

HAZEL PARKER PLAYGROUND

The Conservancy installed two new gardens in 2010 in this popular city park. In the Spring, Park Angels and staff completed a major planting around the tennis courts and recreation building. Phase two of the new garden installa-tion took place in the Fall. Blank ground was trans- formed and hundreds of plants were placed in the space adjacent to the tennis courts, a major entry point into the park.

A tremendous turnout from our Park Angel volunteers made it possible to complete the planting in record time.

GIBBES MUSEUM COURTYARD GARDEN

The Charleston Parks Conservancy partnered with the Women’s Council of the Carolina Art Association, an auxiliary group that supports the Gibbes Museum of Art, to enhance and maintain the Gibbes Courtyard Garden. Park Angels and volunteers from the Women’s Council worked together to add a mix of shrubs and perennials to the space to accommo-date shady and sunny areas and keep the garden flowering 9 months out of the year. This public space is the center point for the historic Gateway Walk, dedicated on April 10, 1930, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Charleston.

Renovation ProjectsPark Renovations include planning and implementation of projects in existing parks. These can be as subtle as

a new planting bed to a complete redo of a park.

Garden in the ParksCHAPEL STREET FOUNTAIN PARK

The Conservancy and Park Angels have been busy working in Chapel Street Fountain Park for almost two years. About 200 new plants were planted in the park throughout 2010 thanks in large part to the Park Angels from the surrounding neighborhood. From ripping out the old groundcover to planting, composting, and mulching the beds, the support from the community for their neighborhood park contributed tremendously to its care.

The Conservancy was also the key facilitator for the improved tree care at Chapel Street Fountain Park that started in Spring 2010. With an abundance of live oak trees throughout the City parks, pruning is a necessary part of caring for our parks to keep the trees healthy and visitors safe. Dead wood, damaged branches and sucker growth left the live oaks in this park unsightly and lead to debris falling to the landscape below. The Conservancy staff met with the City to discuss the required work. After agreeing on the scope, the Conservancy contracted a local tree service to complete the pruning. The dead wood was cut out, chipped, and removed from the site. The completed pruning allowed for more light to hit the grass below, and opened the tree canopy to expose the beautiful branch work of the live oaks in this park.

The Conservancy staff, Park Angel

volunteers, and engaged community

members and organizations collaborate

with the City of Charleston Parks

Department to enhance the level of

care in parks within the Conservancy’s

Garden in the Parks program.

WINDERMERE BOULEVARD COMMUNITY GARDEN

This garden began as a collaboration between The Charleston Parks Conservancy and The Charleston Horticultural Society. Park Angels and Charleston Horticultural Society members come together once a month to tend this garden.

In the Fall, the Conservancy added stone walkways in the Windermere garden to improve both functionality and aesthetics. Strategically placed in high foot traffic areas, the walkways offered visitors a place to walk while not trampling plants or turf. Plants were then added between the small patches of stone to extend the garden to both sides of the sidewalk.

ELLIOTBOROUGH PARK AND COMMUNITY GARDEN

In Spring 2010, the Conservancy planted two beds at the entrance of this park with a mix of flowering shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses, giving the space a floral display from March through December. The park is also home to the Elliotbor-ough Community Garden. One of the first in the City of Charleston, this community garden contains planting areas and family growing spaces. The Conservancy supplied compost to be used by all in the community, gardening tools on Garden in the Park planting days, and horticultural expertise to Elliotborough’s community gardeners.

Community Gardens

In response to growing interest in community

gardens, the Conservancy created a program to

help neighborhoods guide and manage these

community spaces.

Page 10: Charleston Parks Conservancy 2010 Annual Report

VolunteerismEducation

The Park Angels are the volunteer force of the Charleston Parks Conservancy. This program

was introduced to the community in 2008, and by the end of 2010 grew to over

470 members strong.

The Park Angels are an integral part of the Conservancy’s work in our community. From regular planting and horticultural maintenance of the Conservancy’s 16

active parks and greenspaces, to helping with community and fundraising events, over 1500 volunteer hours were given in

2010 by Park Angels to improve and care for our parks.

Educate You, the Conservancy’s newest program program, launched a series of classes targeting beginning gardeners and those who wanted to improve their horticulture how-to. Classes such as Vegetable Gardening for Beginners in the South, Creating and Living in a Healthy Garden and Container Gardening for Beginners were but a few of those offered.

A new video tutorial series called Down and Dirty with Gardener Jim Martin launched in the fall adding a new depth to our online garden resources for Lowcountry gardeners.

Fundraisers Friendraisers

PARK WEEKThe Conservancy hosted the first Park Week in early March with a series of free events, encouraging locals to get out and experience Charleston’s parks and green-spaces. From gardening classes to Bark Angel events for our four legged friends, Park Week was a way to showcase parks in the unique ways that they are used by all.

TEDDY BEAR PICNICHundreds of people turned out for the second an-nual Teddy Bear Picnic in Hampton Park in October. Park Angel volunteers assisted the staff in making this a memorable event for many families. Children and adults danced to the music of Sol Driven Train, and enjoyed games, activities, a parade, and a picnic in the park on a Sunday afternoon. Building on the popularity of the previous year’s event, the Teddy Bear Picnic had 10 cash sponsors and 16 in kind sponsors who gener-ously contributed to enable the Conservancy to host this free event.

PARTY FOR !E PARKS

The Conservancy held its first Party for the Parks Amusement on the Avenue fundraiser in March at

Colonial Lake. The street party with its vendors, multi-talented performers and unique setting spread the word about the Conservancy’s efforts and gave the over 500 attendees a chance to have fun and

support our cause. Over $16,000 was raised to support the Conservancy’s mission.
