NOMENCLATURE

Directions for AssemblyWARNING: Read and understand all instruction and warnings in

this manual BEFORE using this firearm. It is important to learn the partsof your firearm and their functions before using this firearm.

The 1892 Lever Action Rifle comes completely assembled. The 1892

Take Down Lever Action Rifle is shipped in 2 parts, the barrel assemblyand the receiver assembly. (Fig 1) Before assembling the rifle, makesure there are no shells in the chamber.1. Remove the magazine tube from the barrel assembly by opening the

magazine tube lever and rotating counter clockwise. (Fig 2) After themagazine tube is completely unscrewed, remove the magazine tubefrom the barrel assembly.

2. On the receiver assembly, completely open the lever.3. Position the barrel assembly in the receiver assembly at a 90 degree

angle. (Fig 3) The top of the barrel will be in the same plane as theloading gate side of the receiver.

4. Rotate the barrel 90 degrees

in a clockwise rotation toengage the male threads onthe barrel to the femalethreads on the receiver. Some force may be requiredat the end of the rotation tocompletely line up the barrelassembly with the receiver.

5. Install the magazine tube in the barrel assembly and screw the tubeinto the receiver in a counter clockwise rotation. After the magazinetube is completely screwed in, the tube may need to be unscrewedslightly to get the lever perpendicular to the barrel. Notice the slot inthe bottom of the muzzle end of the barrel that the magazine levermust be aligned with in order to close. When the magazine lever iscompletely perpendicular to the barrel, close the magazine tube lever.

6. Close the receiver lever and assembly is complete.7. Note that due to the design of the gun, the removal of the magazine

tube will create rotation marks on the tube because of the tube beingtwisted in the magazine ring. This is normal wear for the design of thegun.

Disassembly for Take Down modelsWARNING: Read and understand all instructions and warning in

this manual before using this rifle.

Always make sure the rifle is completely unloaded before disassembly.

Disassemble for ease of transportation and cleaning is accomplished byfollowing the assembly instructions above in reverse order.Disassemble, clean and oil your rifle at regular intervals or when it hasbeen exposed to sand, water or other adverse conditions.

Further disassembly is not recommended and not necessary for

regular maintenance.

CAUTION: Always unload your rifle and store it and ammunitionseparately in locked receptacles out of children’s reach and sight, minimizing the risk that the gun and ammunition could be easilyavailable for loading and firing.

USE YOUR RIFLE CAREFULLY AND SAFELY.

Operating InstructionsWARNING: Read and understand all instructions and warnings in

this manual BEFORE using this firearm. It is important to learn the partsof your rifle and their functions before using this firearm.

SafetyYour rifle is a trustful 19th century replica of

an 1892 Lever Action. Consequently, thesafety devices on it are limited to thetechnologic knowledge of the period thegun was designed. As per the originaldesign of the Model 1892, the only safetyfor the gun is the hammer half cockposition (Fig 4).

6

Page 9: Charlesdaly 1892

8/6/2019 Charlesdaly 1892

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/charlesdaly-1892 9/20

The hammer in the safety position (halfcock position) is strictly recommended

when firing is not imminent and acartridge is chambered. The hammeris in the cocked position when theaction is cycled using the lever. (Fig 5)To position in the safety position, place

your thumb on the hammer and hold it firmly. (Fig 6) While holding thehammer back, apply just enough pressure on the trigger to release thehammer and gently allow the hammer to move forward to the dropped

position. (Fig 7) With the hammer in the dropped position, pull thehammer rearward gently with your thumb without your fingers in thetrigger area until you hear the hammer engage in the half cock position. This is the safety position and if you pull the trigger, the hammer will notbe released. IMPORTANT: Practice putting the hammer in the safeposition without live ammunition in the chamber until you arecomfortable with the procedure.

AmmunitionCharles Daly only recommends the use of factory ammunition of thecorrect caliber for the rifle. The use of hand loaded, reloaded or othernon-SAAMI standard ammunition will also void all warrantees. Thecaliber of your rifle is marked on the barrel. See the markings section ofthis manual.

Loading the MagazineFirst check the caliber of theammunition to be the same asindicated on the barrel.Failure to follow thisinstruction can result insevere damage to your gunand possible serious injuryto yourself and others. Thelever must be completelyclosed and the hammer in thedropped (uncocked) position.(Fig 8) See the safety sectionof this manual for procedure toget the hammer in the dropped position. Press the spring cover of theloading gate inward with the tip of the first cartridge until all but the rimhas entered the loading gate. Then insert the next cartridge in the samemanner, pushing the preceding cartridge into the magazine. Repeat thisprocedure with each cartridge, but push the last cartridge past the end ofthe spring cover, allowing the cover to snap closed.

Instructions for FiringWhen operating the lever, werecommend the middle, ringand little finger to be placed inthe trigger guard with thethumb up and away from thehammer. IMPORTANT: The

forefinger must always bekept out of the trigger guardand away from the trigger notto risk an accidentaldischarge. (Fig 9) Firmlyshoulder the rifle and hold theforend with the butt plate

against your shoulder so that the recoil will not hurt. To load a round intothe chamber, move the lever downward and fully forward. The actionmust be smooth and fast. When the lever is completely forward you canhear the cartridge going from the magazine into the receiver. Close thelever also with a smooth fast action. During this phase the breech bolt

has cocked the hammer. Take aim and when on target, squeeze thetrigger to fire the cartridge. Open the lever with energy to extract theempty cartridge from the chamber. The extractor will eject the firedcartridge up and slightly to the right side of the receiver. While the firedcartridge is ejected, a new cartridge is coming into the receiver andwhen the lever is closed, the loading cycle is completed.

UnloadingTo unload live cartridges from the rifle, first make sure the muzzle ispointed in a safe direction. Open the lever and close with a smooth fastaction. The unfired cartridges will be extracted and ejected from thechamber with each complete cycle of the lever.

CAUTION: Make sure the rifle is completely unloaded before storing, transporting, or cleaning.

Installed in the rifle is amagazine limitation rod toreduce the magazine capacityto five rounds. The magazinelimitation rod can be removed toincrease the capacity to 10 to

13 rounds depending on thecaliber. (Fig 10) Please verify local legislation before removal of the rodto increase capacity.

To remove the limitation rod follow the following steps.1. Remove the magazine plug screw from the magazine plug. Note that

on the Take Down Model there are 2 magazine plug screws toremove.

2. Slide the magazine plug and limitation rod out of the magazine tube.3. Unscrew the limitation rod from the magazine plug.4. Install the magazine plug in the magazine tube with the magazine

plug screw or 2 screws for the Take Down Model.

Rear Sight AdjustmentThe rear sight is placed a fewinches in front of the receiver. The sight can be manuallyadjusted to raise or lower thepoint of impact by moving therear sight ramp backward to

raise the sight or forward tolower the sight by one or morenotches. (Fig 11) Thisadjustment will allow the rearsight to be lowered or raised

depending on the shooting distance and ammunition used.

It is also possible to adjust the rear sight for windage as follows (Fig 11):

1. Loosen the front sight screw on the upper front side of the sight.2. Use a non-marking brass, plastic of fiber hammer and gently tap therear sight base to the left or to the right according to the direction youwith to move the point of aim.

3. Tighten the sight screw.

Front Sight AdjustmentThe front sight is adjustable byloosening the front sight screw. The front sight can be movedto the left or right direction. When placed in the desiredposition, tighten the screwagain. (Fig 12)

make the percussion weaker. (Fig 13)

MarkingsThe serial number of the gun is visible under the receiver. It must not becancelled or modified for any reason. (Fig 14)

The homologation marks of the Italian Nation Proof House are visibleunder the receiver near the lever. (Fig 15)

Markings for the importer, manufacturer, and caliber are visible in theupper area of the barrel close to the rear sight. (Fig 16)

Routine and Non-Routine Maintenance

Before performing any cleaning procedures, always make certain thereare no cartridges in the chamber, magazine or action/feed areas.Routine maintenance means everything the user should do to keep thegun in good working condition. Non-routine maintenance means toreplace broken parts and therefore disassemble the gun. In this caseonly a qualified gunsmith should do the work. For routine maintenance clean your Model 1892 after every day ofshooting and more often if it becomes excessively dirty. Use a light

weight quality gun oil and avoid oil residual. Do not use pure silicon orlanolin. Check the action to be smooth. In case the lever becomesharder to operate, check the receiver internally for residual or fragmentsof lead to other debris. If the problem persists, take the gun to aqualified gunsmith. After extended periods of heavy use or a long period of inactivity, yourgun should be taken to a qualified gunsmith to have the actiondisassembled for a professional cleaning and lubrication.

If the gun has a problem that you can not solve, DO NOT use it!Take the gun to a qualified gunsmith for service or contact Charles Daly.

Following are some suggestions to solve some malfunctioningproblems.
