Charles W. Moore.

Charles was the son of Charles Ephraim and Kathryn (‘Katie’) Moore, and the brother of one younger sister, Mimi. (Through his father’s first marriage, Charles had one stepsister, lilla, who grew up in Arizona). His mother was short and often wore a hat and gloves. She was outgoing, vivacious, colorful, and endearing. Paradoxically Charles’s genius isolated him socially, while his mother expanded his world, both geographically and intellectually, beyond the monotonous conventions of the American Midwest. She taught Charles to absorb ideas and to see the world in a way that build the foundations for his architecture and love of place.

(known as “big boy” to the children), whom Charles grew to physically resemble. His father had inherited interests in several newspapers in Michigan and Indiana, but had little interest in them, so he dabbed in an assortment of ventures: he co-owned the first automobile dealership in Battle Creek, ran two farms, managed the Willard estates, and dipped into real estate development and built, for instance, two houses on “Hiawatha Hill” bordering Goguac Lake. One of the houses, a simple, unadorned, white clapboard structure was Charles’s home for most of his childhood.

Charles was a acutely shy boy and was very serious about his work. Though he was on tour for major part of the year his assignments were complete.

Charles childhood interests were horse riding, swimming and sailing and photography. Charles was also a voracious reader.

Charles Moore enrolled in the University of Michigan School of Architecture in September 1942.

In college Charles met Roger Bailey, a professor who had a profound impact on Charles life and also was a father figure.

From his only surviving projects from undergraduate course, the worker’s housing project reveals Charles fascination for Modern design.

The next big turning point in Moore’s career was the tie up with Centrebrook.
