Match unfinished

[Page 102]

[Blank page]

[Transcriber’s notes]:

1. There are a three pages missing at the beginning. Comparing Lawrence’s score sheets

with the matches listed in the book Cricket Walkabout, missing are the Surrey innings

score sheet from Match 1 and both score sheets from Match 2 (Maidstone).

2. Pages 81 and 82 are repeats of pages 75 and 76 respectively.

Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales

Charles Lawrence - Papers, 1868-1896 MLMSS 7132; Safe 1 / 227

Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW

3. There are a number of blank pages. Pages 94,95,96 and 97 are ruled but blank except

for the headings “How out, Bowler,” etc. Page 102 is a ruled page with no entry.

4. There are some discrepancies between Lawrence’s scores and those in Cricket

Walkabout, some in the innings totals and some in the quoted winning margins, eg.

Matches 1(P1), 7(P7), 11(P18), 13(P23), 18(P33), 20(P37), 21(P39), 23(43), 24(P44),

25(P47), 27(P50), 28(P52) 38(P72),39(P74), 43(P84,85) and 44(P87). Lawrence’s

arithmetic has been checked and is OK except in Match 28 where the difference

appears to be his error. Most of the differences are small (just a few runs) except in

Match 24(P44) where it is 100 runs. In this case the error is certainly in the book.

There may also be differences in the individual scores but these have not been

checked.

5. Lawrence’s spelling is sometimes poor and sometimes erratic. C Dumas begins as

Charlie and becomes Charley, Quin becomes Quinn, Rodger becomes Rodgers,

Bramhall is Bramall, Middlesbrough is Middleborough, Kensington is Kenington,

Caesar is Ceasar, Denison is Dension, etc. These have been transcribed as written.

6. Lawrence’s alterations have been ignored in the score boxes, one in a text line had

been included as a strike through.

7. The handwriting is often very hard to interpret, especially in proper names. Lower

case m, n, w, i, u are made with identical up and down stokes. Upper case I and J are

very similar, generally the J goes below the line but not always. Guesswork has been

used in difficult cases, sometime indicated by [?].
