BIOGRAPHY

Dewey was born in Pueblo, Colorado on September 1, 1930. He is married to Carol J. “Jeanie” Reinhard. They have three grown sons: Steve, Chip, and Tom, all of whom live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They have seven grand children, and one great grandson.

Dewey graduated from Colorado Springs High School in1948. He attended Colorado A&M University 1950-51. He served in the U.S. Navy 1951-55. After being discharged from the Navy he worked in electronics. He was self-employed most of his working life, owning several service oriented businesses and real estate investments.

Dewey became interested in ballooning when he and Jeanie attended an air show in Palm Springs, California in the early 70’s, where they saw two hot air balloons inflated in a light rain. Even though the bal-loons did not fly, that lit the spark of interest in ballooning for him. He jokingly said, “If anyone knows of a hot air balloon for sale I would be interested.” The very next day his controller informed him that he had purchased a Raven S55A hot air balloon for $3,600,.00.(See yellow and black balloon picture at right.) It was purchased in 1972, but stayed in its bag until May 12, of 1974 when he had his first flying lesson from an Air Force Academy cadet by the name of Jim Greeson. Dewey has owned five balloons: A Raven S50A, 2 TBW Firefly 7’s, and 2 Yost Skypower GBR1000 gas balloons.

MISCELLANEOUS FLYING INFORMATION

• Balloon Flying time 1,500+ hours. Most of the balloon time was accumulated flying in approximately 300 events over the past 36 years • Fixed wing flying time: Cessna 170B, Cessna 182 Skylane, Cessna Turbo 210, Piper Pacer. (2500+ hours.) • U.S. Navy flying time: Approx. (250 hours air crew on anti-submarine helicopters and misc. fixed wing aircraft). Gliders:(100+hours.) • Some of the helicopter time was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte CVS-32. Fun!

MISCELLANEOUS FUN STUFF

• Incorporating gas balloons in The Colorado Springs Balloon Classic. • Getting The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta involved with the BFA for sanctioned gas balloon competition. • Organizing a CNTE hot air balloon competition with the X on the summit house of Pikes Peak. (14,110ft.) • Organizing a balloon glow with 44 balloons in the streets of downtown Colorado Springs during the "Classic". Along with the balloon glow; we had the Front Range Skydivers do an evening jump into downtown. (They only did it once) • One year during the "Classic", we provided $5.00 helicopter rides to our spectators from 10:00 AM until dark. The helicopter rides were a huge success. • Night flight as a student hot balloon pilot with Jeanie and my instructor across the city of Colorado Springs. Landed in total darkness. • Beautiful night flight in a gas balloon over Munich, Germany with Troy Bradley. • Our top priority criteria for the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic was to provide a very high quality event for the balloon pilots, and I think we succeeded in doing that. We also enabled The Kiwanis Club of Colorado Springs and other, not for profit, organizations to raise thousands of dollars for charities by participating in the "Classic". It was fun. • All of this fun ballooning and all of the other things we do for fun could not have happened without the support and participa- tion of my family and my wife Jeanie.
