Why do we need a Butterfly Garden?

Today approximately 25 patients will need the help of the end of life services at West Suffolk Hospital

Each year the palliative care team cares for over 1000 palliative care admissions

These patients are looked after by a dedicated team made up of two consultants and five palliative care specialist nurses

Our VisionCurrently, end of life patients are cared for with no dedicated space to allow for privacy and time with those who matter. We want to change this.

Our vision is to create a garden with a glass-fronted building which will accommodate a patient in their bed. The area will allow patients and their loved ones to spend quality time together, away from the hustle and bustle of the wards, as they prepare to say goodbye. It will provide an area for quiet contemplation, peaceful reflection and privacy for all.

Children will be able to play, pets can visit and memories to treasure can be made at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Brenda Avison28.04.1948 - 27.10.2016

“Mum adored being in my garden at home and we shared many happy times together as a family. To be able to do this within the safety of the hospital during her final days would have been amazing and definitely have helped us to create some special memories.”

Steve Trowles, son of much loved Brenda, and My WiSH Charity Ambassador

There is never a good time to say goodbye, but we all share the same vision of wishing to be surrounded by our loved ones in our final hours.

West Suffolk Hospital’s palliative care team, including clerical staff, volunteers and lead consultant Mary McGregor

“This garden will make a huge difference to our patients. To give them an area where they can enjoy quality time with the special people in their lives is just so important.”

Dr Mary McGregor

The Butterfly Garden will provide:

A peaceful haven away from the busy ward

Space for staff to have difficult conversations with loved ones

Pets to be able to visit for the last time

Space for families to spend quality time together

The building will have large glass doors which will open to make the space feel part of the garden. There will be calming light, music, a TV; everything needed to make it a comfortable environment for all.

The garden will be full of sensory plants and include a water feature. It will be specially designed to allow easy movement of a patient in their bed, so they can also enjoy the outside space.

This garden will provide an area which doesn’t feel like a hospital, but a beautiful place to provide sanctuary at a difficult time

Together we can make a difference.

A tranquil outside space for patients in their bed

We already provide patients and their loved ones with:Comfort packs which contain essentials to allow people to stay beside the bed of their loved one

Training to allow nurses to administer pain relief

Ready beds which allow loved ones to stay

Scenic screens to enhance the bedspace. They include a beach, woodland and hot air balloon floating over fields

But we need to do more. Your donation will mean family and friends can come together in a tranquil, private space to say goodbye and make precious memories in those final days.
