rlenna’s letterOh the lazy, hazy days of summer! Well, at Boysville, we are definitely not lazy! The children are on campus enjoying lots of activities or traveling to distant places while experiencing many exciting adventures.

In addition to the swimming pool, arts and crafts, and games in the Chrysanthemum Gymnasium, our children stayed busy with H-E-B Camp, Camp WildBeast, FCA Eagle’s Wings Camp, Boys and Girls Slam Dunk for Life, Girl Scout Day Camp at Salado Park at Ft. Sam Houston, Boy Scout Camp at Bexar Creek, the Optimist Club of San Antonio Bowl-A-Thon and the Annual Fishing Tournament at Live Oak City Park hosted by the Town and Country Optimists. Everyone had a great time. Thank you to all of our donors and volunteers who made these opportunities available to our children.

Colby College in Maine was the destination for several of our middle and high school youth participating in the Home Olympics. Their trip included a first time airplane flight (for many of our children) and two days of sight seeing in Boston and Salem, Massachusetts. At the Home Olympics, these budding athletes participated in track, swimming, basketball, softball and volleyball. They returned from the trip laden with gold, silver and bronze medals and an abundance of lifetime memories. Special thanks to the Valero Energy Corporation for their help in sending our children to the Home Olympics in Maine.

In addition to the normal routine of summer activities, our staff was very busy on campus providing special accommodations for children from Eldorado, Texas. This was an experience we will always value with the hope that the children remember the compassion and kindness they received from the staff at Boysville.

It was a wonderful summer and we are grateful for the opportunities we all experienced.

In August, there are two great opportunities for you to help our children: First is San Antonio’s hottest golf tournament, The Heatwave Golf Tournament. Enjoy a pre-tournament dinner on August 8th and golf tournament at the Quarry Golf Club on August 9th. Board members, Edward DeWees, III and Mark Meador have made this one of the most successful charity tournaments in town with the philosophy of “having fun while making a difference.” Second, Boysville’s 42nd Annual Wildest Auction in the West will be on August 22nd at the newly opened event center at the Valero Energy Corporation. Harvey Najim will be our honorary chair. Come enjoy the great food, drinks and entertainment as well as the wildest silent and live auction which is sure to have many great items and surprises!

Through your support of these two fundraisers, you are helping us to complete our mission of providing a safe family environment for children in need so that they can become responsible adults. Thank you for your continued support!

Volunteers can help make such a difference on our campus. From mentoring a resident to helping organize a closet, there are several ways you or your organization can get involved at Boysville.

Here are several opportunities to get involved in our mission of helping children:

•VolunteerduringourWildestAuctionintheWestfundraisinggala •Baby-sitourinfantsandtoddlers •Adoptacottagetohelpwithrecreationalactivitiesand/orhomework •Coachavolleyballorbasketballteam •Helpwithholidayfestivities

For more information on volunteering, contact Andrea Carranco at [email protected] or (210) 659-1901.

arts and craftsWe kicked off our arts and crafts program in June. Since its revival, the residents have made treasure boxes, pop-up books, learned about environmental art and used their imagination to make animal creatures from rocks.

For many of our residents, arts and crafts is a form of therapy. It allows them to express themselves in a creative manner or escape from their worries for a couple of hours.

Donations of arts and crafts supplies such as finger paints, construction paper, poster board, drawing pads, glue and children’s scissors are accepted.

volunteer spotlightMs. Becky, as the children know her, has a passion for art and a desire to help children. She volunteers as the art teacher and works with our children twice a week to explore their creativity.

In addition to helping with arts and crafts, she also volunteers at special events and helps baby-sit our infants and toddlers when needed.

Thank you Ms. Becky!

campus newsdesign treasuresThe Society for Design Administrators hosted the “Design Treasures” program for residents 12 years and older. Residents were exposed to hand-on experience of architecture, engineering and construction. Various architects, engineers and construction professionals set-up stations to show various stages of construction for a building. Children learned how to lay out a room, use a crane and build models.

Prizes such as tickets to Skateland, movie passes, two (2) IPODs, a bicycle and much more were awarded to the residents for their participation in the program.

Special thanks to Patricia De Haro from DHR Architects and Stella Bustos from Spectrum Lighting for coordinating this event.

h’olympicsThe Boysville Bobcats Home Olympics (H’Olympics) team traveled to Waterville, Maine for the National Fellowship of Child Care Executives annual competition. This year’s competition was hosted by Good Will-Hinckley at Colby College. Eight children’s homes from across the country participated in the games.

The 23-member team of boys and girls competed in basketball, softball, swimming, track and field and volleyball. The Bobcats won a total of 117 medals. The girls’ team won gold in softball and silver in volleyball and basketball.

Shakyra L. and Joe M. won the Hustle Award.

The trip was not all work and no play. The Boysville athletes and staff visited the USS Constitution, Salem, Portland Head Lighthouse, Faneuil Hall and climbed

the Bunker Hill monument. The team also utilized all forms of transportation including flying, walking, riding vans, the water taxi and the commuter rail! For many of our children, this was their first time traveling outside of Texas and flying on an airplane.

Special thanks to the Valero Energy Corporation for providing the grant that allowed our children to take part in this special event.

Also, Boysville appreciates the staff and coaches who worked with the children to encourage them to be the best athlete they could be.

During summer vacation from school, our children stayed busy with H-E-B Camp, Camp Wildbeast, FCA Eagle’s Wings Camp, Boys and Girls Slam Dunk for Life, Girl Scout Day Camp at Salado Park at Ft. Sam Houston, Boy Scout Camp at Bexar Creek, the Optimists’ Bowl-a-thon and Annual Fishing Tournament at Live Oak City Park hosted by the Town and Country Optimists.

planned giving

You’ve supported Boysville for years through memorial or happy gifts, special fundraisers or appeals. For many years, you have donated to our children because you know that Boysville provides a safe home for children in need.

Now you can create a living legacy through your estate planning ensuring that Boysville will continue to receive your support long into the future.

Boysville has created a new planned giving tool—The Charitable Remainder Trust.

For donors over age 65, you can create a living legacy to help children in need for many more years while receiving income from your gift. The CRT allows a donor to make a substantial gift to Boysville while achieving income and estate tax savings for the person creating the trust. Because your gift is destined for Boysville, the CRTs do not pay any capital gains taxes. CRTs are great for assets including stocks or property with a low cost basis but high appreciated value. The full value of any assets transfers to the trust without paying capital gains taxes and reduce your income taxes.

For more information on how to include Boysville in your planned giving, contact Ed Baxter at 210-659-1901.

Boysville Needs Your Support!Boysville needs the support of the community every day. Over half of Boysville’s budget is achieved through donations. By providing much needed donations, you are helping to fulfill our mission of creating a safe, family environment for children in need so that they may become responsible adults.

Your gift can come in many forms:

Current gifts—cash, check, or credit card donation or electronic fund transfer with securities; or with real estate.

Honorary & Memorial gifts allow you to recognize others through your giving. All gifts are recognized in the Boysville Today Newsletter as well as a card sent to the honoree or family of the bereaved.

Wills, bequests, IRAs, life insurance, real estate and living trusts allow you to create a legacy.

Dual benefit gifts, including The Charitable Remainder Trust, provide you and your loved ones with earnings.
