Yes, another of those "crazy" Christmas trees Crazy Christmas trees made up of variety of materials have been the latest trend of the holiday season. Unlike the nicely lid traditional trees we've known for ages, trees made up of glass, plastic, chocolate, LEGO, or even bikes are now making their way bravely ahead, bringing along a sense of wonder and surprise. This notion has been taken up and developed by design organization Charette. The material they used for their "crazy" Christmas tree plastic bottles. Citizens and guests of Sofia, Bulgaria, are currently enjoying their own crazy Christmas tree, located right across Sofia Military club. The tree is never lonely. It gets the attention of all young and old, big and small, people in their cars, people on their feet, people in taxis, people on bikes. No one can pass it with indifference. Nor do they remain silent at its sight. Comments as: "That is the most beautiful and interesting thing we've seen so far in Sofia" (two tourists) or "I want to learn how to make a tree of bottles and have my own tree at home" (a teenage girl) or "I passed the tree thinking it was real, then to my surprise I went back to discover it is made from plastic. Amazing" (a middle aged lady) or "That is the most beautiful plastic bottle tree I have witnessed....and I've seen a lot" (a designer). Charette member Gancho Belchev connected 600 plastic bottles using wooden sticks to create this unique design. Interesting, right? The point of all this of course is to increase awareness on the possibilities of recycling, to demonstrate that materials can be reused to create beauty. The result you could see yourself.

Plastic  bottles  for  Christmas?  Yes,  another  of  those  "crazy"  Christmas  trees

Crazy  Christmas  trees  made  up  of  variety  of  materials  have  been  the  latest  trend  of  the  holiday  season.

Unlike   the   nicely   lid   traditional   trees   we've   known   for   ages,   trees  made   up   of   glass,   plastic,   chocolate,

LEGO,   or   even   bikes   are   now   making   their   way   bravely   ahead,   bringing   along   a   sense   of   wonder   and

surprise.  This  notion  has  been  taken  up  and  developed  by  design  organization  Charette.  The  material  they

used  for  their  "crazy"  Christmas  tree  -‐  plastic  bottles.  Citizens  and  guests  of  Sofia,  Bulgaria,  are  currently

enjoying  their  own  crazy  Christmas  tree,  located  right  across  Sofia  Military  club.  The  tree  is  never  lonely.  It

gets  the  attention  of  all  -‐  young  and  old,  big  and  small,  people  in  their  cars,  people  on  their  feet,  people  in

taxis,   people   on   bikes.   No   one   can   pass   it   with   indifference.   Nor   do   they   remain   silent   at   its   sight.

Comments  as:  "That  is  the  most  beautiful  and  interesting  thing  we've  seen  so  far  in  Sofia"  (two  tourists)  or

"I  want  to  learn  how  to  make  a  tree  of  bottles  and  have  my  own  tree  at  home"  (a  teenage  girl)  or  "I  passed

the  tree  thinking  it  was  real,  then  to  my  surprise  I  went  back  to  discover  it  is  made  from  plastic.  Amazing"

(a  middle  aged  lady)  or  "That  is  the  most  beautiful  plastic  bottle  tree  I  have  witnessed....and  I've  seen  a  lot"

(a  designer).

Charette  member  Gancho  Belchev  connected  600  plastic  bottles  using  wooden  sticks  to  create  this

unique   design.   Interesting,   right?   The   point   of   all   this   of   course   is   to   increase   awareness   on   the

possibilities  of  recycling,  to  demonstrate  that  materials  can  be  reused  to  create  beauty.  The  result  -‐  you

could  see  yourself.

Design  organization  Charette  initiated  this  project  as  part  of  the  eco  trend  it  pursues:  eco  as  a

way   of   life,   not   as   a  marketing   gimmick.  Charette  and   its  members   came   together   to   help   designers

design  themselves  a  way  to  execute  and  promote  their  ideas  across  Europe.  Charette's  unique  structure

ensures  that  best  ideas  gain  support  through  the  implementation  of  an  internet  platform,  connecting  all

members  and  enabling  their  work  process.  The  structure  of  the  organization  vests  control  over  design  in

the  hands  of  designers,  thus  making  them  responsible  for  the  decision  Charette  takes,  while  at  the  same

time  entirely  supporting  them.  The  way  Charette  organizes  its  work  processes  is  entirely  online  based,

ensuring   that   distance   does   not   hinder   connection.   This   fully   complies  with   the   organization  wish   to

introduce  a  new  business  model,  where  old  non-‐efficient  corporate  structures  are  replaced  by  entirely

transparent  corporate  governance;  where  old  and  boring  General  meetings  grow  to  fulfil  their  potential

as  online  gatherings  for  true  discussions  of  great  ideas.

But  for  now,  Charette  wishes  you  an  exciting  and  eventful  new  year  filled  with  happiness  and  joy.  And

last  but  not  least,  let  design  prevail!
