What is characterization?

Characterization- method by which an author creates the appearance and personality of imaginary people and objects

Details of Characterization

• Physical appearance, traits, and attributes• What/how the character thinks about

themselves• What the character says and/or the character

acts• What others in the story say about the

character

Why characterize characters?

• Gives the reader a clear picture of what's happening in the story

• Necessary to make the characters seem alive• Evoke emotion from the reader, viewer

Assignment

Create a colored illustration of one of the characters (Ponyboy, Soda, Darry, Dally, Cherry, Johnny, and Two-Bit Matthews based on the descriptions given in Ch.1-2 in The Outsiders. Must include what they think about themselves, what they say, what others think about them
