Character relationships
Pip and Mrs. Joe- Mrs. Joe has brought Pip up “by hand” and has made him into who he
is. She was the one who had raised him since his parents died. Pip drove Mrs. Joe crazy and gave
her many things to complain about and gain sympathy from.
Pip and Joe- Joe was Pip’s father figure and was the only person who had ever shown him love.
Joe was more of a parent to him that Mrs. Joe was. They were really close when Pip was younger
and they both planned on Pip being his apprentice as a blacksmith.
Mrs. Joe and Joe- Mr. Joe and Mrs. Joe are married. Joe sees good in Mrs. Joe, even though that
is very hard to see. Joe has a very kind heart, which you’d need to always put up with Mrs. Joe.
Joe is not very intelligent or proper and Mrs. Joe is not very pretty and she’s harsh they fit well
together and make things work.
Estella and Miss Havisham- Miss Havisham adopted Estella and raised her. Miss Havisham
raised her with a broken heart and never taught her how to love. Estella was raised to torment
men and play with their minds. This caused Estella to not know how to love someone and caused
her to be bitter.
Estella and Pip- Estella made Pip fall in love with her. She played games with his mind (upon
Miss Havisham’s request) and would tease him about being common. Estella was the reason Pip
changed his expectations and wanted to be a gentleman.
Miss Havisham and Pip- In Miss Havisham warping Estella into the person she wanted her to be,
she also changed Pip. Miss Havisham would always throw Estella’s beauty in Pip’s face and
make him want her more. Miss Havisham’s goal was for Estella to break Pip’s heart and she
succeeded. Miss Havisham was the other important factor in Pip’s expectations changing.
Mr. Pumblechook and Pip- Mr. Pumblechook escorted Pip to Miss Havisham’s house for the
first time and therefore felt like he was a big part in Pip’s fortune. He annoyed Pip with all his
bragging, especially because before Pip’s fortune Mr. Pumblechook wanted nothing to do with
Pip and he was very rude and mean to him. At the beginning of this book, Mr. Pumblechook
frustrated Pip and make him upset and feel unwanted, while later in the book he acted as if
they’ve been best friends Pip’s whole life. He shows Pip how people can change when they find
out you’ve gotten money.
Pip and Mr. Jaggers- Mr. Jaggers was Pip’s guardian. He introduced Pip to the “gentleman” life.
He was also the first one to show Pip what effects rich, high class people have on society.
Molly and Jaggers- Jaggers was Molly’s lawyer. He got her out of life in prison and took her in
as his maid.
Jaggers and Estella- Jaggers took Estella from Molly and gave her to Miss Havisham. Jaggers
felt he was doing the right thing and saving her from a lifetime of crime, but he put her into an
environment with no love. Which caused Estella to be cold and unable to love.
Jaggers and Miss Havisham- Jaggers was Miss Havisham’s lawyer and gave her Estella. This
made her less lonely and gave her somebody else other than just herself.
Wemmick and Pip- Wemmick showed Pip that a man should keep his business life and personal
life separate. He also gives Pip advice and becomes his friend.
Orlick and Mrs. Joe- Orlick attacked Mrs. Joe and eventually it killed her. After the attack Mrs.
Joe became more pleasant and way easier to be around.
Orlick and Pip- After Orlick’s attack on Mrs. Joe and attempt to attack Pip, he makes Pip live in
fear of another attack.
Biddy and Pip- Biddy taught Pip for a big portion of his life. She tested his motives in the book
and questioned if he should really be a gentleman. This caused a lot of frustration for Pip.
Biddy’s character showed what a bad person Pip was becoming.
Compeyson and Miss Havisham- Compeyson used Miss Havisham for her fortune and then left
her at the altar. This permanently broke Miss Havisham’s heart. This caused Miss Havisham to
live the rest of her life inside, out of the sun light. She became lonely and antisocial. She never
loved a man again.
Compeyson and Magwitch- Compeyson took Magwitch in to do all of his dirty work. They got
in trouble and Compeyson only got half the sentence that Magwitch did because he was more
“gentlemanly.” Compeyson was the whole reason Magwitch got into great trouble.
Abel Magwitch and Pip- Magwitch was Pip’s benefactor. He made Pip into a gentleman. Pip
gave the convict food when he was starving, he most likely would have died without Pip’s help.
Herbert Pocket and Pip- Pip and Herbert become best friends throughout the book. Herbert
taught Pip lessons on how to be a gentleman.
Matthew Pocket and Pip- Pip studies with Matthew Pocket. He helps Pip become more of a
gentleman and Pip respects him very much.
Matthew Pocket and Miss Havisham- Matthew Pocket was the only person that warned Miss
Havisham that Compeyson was a bad person and not a gentleman. Miss Havisham ordered him
out of the house but now she misses him and wants him at her head at her funeral.
Startop and Magwitch- Startop helps Pip and Magwitch carry out their plan for Magwitch to
escape.
