Olive is very adventurous and brave. She is the

main character of the book. She lives on Linden Street in a very large old

stone house. There she discovers that she can travel into it’s paintings using a special pair of spectacles. Also, the makers of the paintings—the McMartins—are evil and want to get rid of her, even though they’re all dead.

In this book the evil spirits of the dead McMartin family invade the house, summoned by Olive’s new magical neighbors. But Olive stays and fights them.

Morton is a painted boy who lives in the painting

of Linden Street in the old stone house. He is very stubborn but is friends with Olive. Morton desperately wants to find his lost parents.

Olive is helping him look for them. In the book, Morton helps Olive discover a Calling

Candle. This is then used to summon the evil Annabelle McMartin, who captures one of the familiars

These two are Olive’s parents. They are

extremely intelligent mathematicians, with no knowledge of their house’s dark magic.

Olive’s parents disappear on Halloween night. Olive is determined to find them and concludes that Annabelle took them. So, she uses the Calling Candle to summon her and strike a deal to get her parents back.

Haratio is one of the three familiar cats who

guard the house. He is solid orange. Haratio is probably the leader of the three cats.

He is very stern. Haratio, along with the other cats, won’t tell Olive

things they know about the house—even though they are her friends. When the house is invaded by the evil spirits, he has to hide in a painting along with the others.

Leopold is one of the three cat familiars. He acts

military-style. He is always very formal and proper. His coat is solid jet black.

Leopold is the cat captured by the painted Annabelle McMartin. Once the group used a Calling Candle to summon her, they tried to exchange her freedom for information on Olive’s parents. But Annabelle doesn’t think this is fair and says that in order for her to give information, Olive has to give her the spectacles. Leopold then offers himself in there place because the cats can also travel through the paintings. He is taken prisoner.

Harvey is the most bold of the three familiars.

His coat is white with many splotches of color, resembling his bright personality. Harvey is always in character. Sometimes he is Captain Blackpaw, the Hunchcat of Notre Dame, or something else.

Delora and Brian are Olive’s magical new

neighbors. They are both in the magic profession. Delora can speak to the dead.

The two seem nice. They tell Olive that summoning the evil McMartin spirits and casting them out will get rid of their power. But actually they are trying to get Olive to leave the old stone house so that they can take it for themselves.
