    Char-LynnHydraulicMotors

    Introduction

For the past 45 years, the Char-Lynn brand hasbeen recognized as the industry leader in low-speed,high-torque (LSHT) hydraulic motor technology. Thename Char-Lynn was coined by one of the originalpioneers in the hydraulic industry, the late Mr. LynnCharlson. The hydraulic motor designs developedby Lynn Charlson and his team use what is termedas the Orbit principle. This principal is the center ofthe designs pioneered by the Char-Lynn team andis based on the fact that a gerotor or Geroler starorbits multiple times (typically 6 to 8 times dependingon specific star and ring geometry) for each completesingle revolution within the outer ring. This principle

is what gives Char-Lynn motors their reliable highpower density and extremely compact size. Onlythree primary moving components are needed totransmit torque through the motor: star, drive andoutput shaft. Shaft rotation can be instantly reversedby changing inlet / outlet flow while generating equaltorque in either direction. A variety of displacementsizes are available in each motor family that providea wide variety of speeds and torque ranges from anyseries of motors. The results are compact, modular, economical designs that can be easily customized tosuit a wide variety of application needs.

    Circuits

    Circuit DesignConsiderations

    Hydraulic Circuit

Hydraulic drives can bedivided into two basic types:1) Traction Drives and 2)Non-Traction drives. Tractiondrives (also referred to aspropel drives) are used topropel a wheeled or track-driven vehicle. Non-tractiondrives (also referred to aswork drives) are used forsome other vehicle functionsuch as a winch, auger, conveyor or rotate functionfor a boom or crane.

These rotary drive systemscan also be classified aseither open loop or closed-loop circuits.

    Open Loop Circuit

In an open loop circuit, oilis returned to a reservoirbefore returning tothe motor. The motor/pump circuit is open toatmosphere. In an open loopcircuit, the drive speed ofa motor may be controlledby, varying the flow with avalve, changing pump inputspeed (engine or pump inputspeed), or varying flow usinga variable displacementpump. Often these circuits

use counter-balance valvesto accomplish dynamicbraking functions, andprovide a flow (pressure)source to release a spring-applied, hydraulic releasebrake. It is common to usea shuttle valve for directingflow to release the spring-applied pressure-releasebrake. A shuttle valve isbasically a double checkvalve that directs flow fromthe A or B side of the loop

and is often the source offlow to create the pressureto release a brake.

Typical applications usingopen loop circuits include:

    Truck-Mounted Boomsand cranes (boom rotatefunction)

    Aerial Work Platforms(boom rotate function)

    Winches

    Conveyors

    Grapples

    Others

    Closed Loop Circuit

In a closed loop circuit, thereis no reservoir between theinlet and outlet of the motorand pump. The pump outletis connected directly to themotor inlet and the motoroutlet is connected directlyto the pump inlet. Thiscircuit is, in theory, closed toatmosphere. Motor speed istypically controlled using avariable displacement pump. This pump can also controlmotor output shaft direction

    (CW or CCW rotation).

These systems providedynamic control of flowthrough the closed loopof the motor/pump circuit. They are, however, subjectto some inherent internalleakage that results in theinability of the loop to holda load over time. This is whya static brake is typicallyfound in such systemsto mechanically hold theload. Brakes used include

mechanical caliper, disc orball-ramp type brakes. Inaddition, spring-applied,hydraulic release brakes areused. The T Series Motorw/Parking Brake meets thisneed.

Typical applications usingclosed loop circuits include:

    Vehicle traction drives(propel function)

    Conveyors

    Winches

    Others

    DesignFlexibility

Char-Lynn motors are trulybuilt for high torque lowspeed. A lot of power isderived from this smallpackage. This poweradvantage provides thedesigner with a productthat can be used for overallcompactness in addition totaking full advantage of thehigh pressure ratings typicalof present day hydrauliccomponents.

Char-Lynn hydraulic motorsallow the designer to put thepower where it is needed.Furthermore, the motorscan be mounted directlyon the driven device awayfrom the original powersource which eliminates theneed for other mechanicallinkages such as chains, sprockets, belts, pulleys, gears, rotating drive shafts, and universal joints. Severalmotors can be driven fromthe same power source andcan be connected in series

    or parallel to each other.

    Durability

The design and method ofmanufacture of three criticaldrive train components:valve drive, shaft drive, and output shaft, givethese motors durability.Consequently, the motorsstand up against highhydraulic pressures.

    Performance Rating

Our method of rating thesemotors recognizes that at

slower speeds and flow, higher pressures and torqueare permitted. Hence, ourperformance data showsthe complete flow range(down to 1 liter per minuteor 1/4 gallon per minute)and speed range (down toone revolution per minutedepending on application).

    Controllable Speeds

Char-Lynn motors operate atlow speeds that remain verynear constant even whenload varies. Shaft speed isvaried smoothly, easily andeconomically using simpleinexpensive controls. Also, these motors are reversible.Consequently, directionof shaft rotation can bechanged instantly with equaloutput torque in eitherdirection.

    Dependable Performance

Highly precise manufac-turing of parts provideconsistent, dependableperformance and longlife even under varyingconditions.

    Reliability

Char-Lynn motors areself contained, withhydraulic fluid providinglubrication. These motorsare completely sealed sothey can operate safelyand reliably in hostileenvironments such as dusdirt, steam, water, andheat and provide reliableperformance.

    High Efficiencies

Char-Lynn motors efficienconvert the suppliedhydraulic fluids pressure aflow into a low speed hightorque rotational output. Tefficiency minimizes the rof hydraulic system heatgeneration and maximizesshaft horsepower.

    Case Drain and ShuttleValve Options

Many hydraulic systemscan benefit from the use ofa system case drain. Char-Lynn motors provide this

feature built in. One of theadvantages for case drainflow is that contaminationis flushed from the system. This flushing also aids incooling the system andlowering the case pressure

which will extend motorseal life. With a case drainline in place, oil pressure inthe gear box (Bearinglessmotor applications) can alsobe controlled. In applicationswhere more system cooling

and flushing is required,a shuttle valve option isavailable in W series, 20004000 Compact, 4000, 600series, VIS 30, VIS 40 andVIS 45 series motors.

Step One Calculate Motor Speed (RPM)

If vehicle speed is expressed in m/second, multiply by 3.6 toconvert to KPH. If vehicle speed is expressed in ft./second,divide by 1.47 to convert to MPH.

    Step Two Determine Rolling Resistance

Rolling resistance (RR) is the force required to propel avehicle over a particular surface. The values in Table 1 aretypical of various surfaces per 1000 lb. of vehicle weight.

Step Three Tractive Effort to Ascend Grade

The largest grade a vehicle can ascend is called itsgradability. Grade is usually expressed as a percent ratherthan in degrees. A rise of one meter in ten meters or onefootrise in ten feet of travel is a 1/10 or 10 percent grade.

Step Four Determine Acceleration Force (FA)

The force (FA) required to accelerate from stop to maximumspeed (KPH) or (MPH) in time (t) seconds can be obtainedfrom the following equation:

    Step Five Determine Drawbar Pull

Drawbar Pull (DP) is total force available at the drawbar orhitch after the above forces have been subtracted fromthe total propelling force produced by the hydraulic motors. This value is established as either:

    1. A goal or objective of the designer.

    2. A force required to pull a trailer (Repeat steps twothrough four above using trailer weight and add the threeforces together to obtain DP).

    Vehicle DriveCalculations

    Step Six Total Tractive Effort

The tractive effort (TE) is the total force required to propelthe vehicle and is the sum of the forces determined inSteps 2 through 5.

Wind resistance forces can usually be neglected. However,it may be wise to add 10% to the above total to allow for

starting resistances caused by friction in bearings and othermechanical components.

Step Seven Calculate Hydraulic Motor Torque (T)

    Step EightWheel Slip

If the torque required to slip the wheel (TS) is less thanthe torque calculated in Step 7, the performance objectivescannot be achieved.

It may be desirable to allow the wheel to slip to preventhydraulic system overheating when excessive loads areimposed should the vehicle stall. In this case TS should bejust slightly larger than T.

Step Nine Motor Radial Load Carrying Capacity

When a motor is used to drive a vehicle with the wheelmounted directly on the motor shaft or rotating hub, theTotal Radial Load (RL) acting on the motor shaft is the vecsummation of two forces acting at right angles to eachother.

Refer to radial load rating of each motor series.

    Free RunningGeroler Sets/Gerotor Sets

This feature is available in allChar-Lynn motors.

    Features:

The free running optionis accomplished using aspecially precision-machinedgerotor/geroler assembly. This feature increases theclearance between the starand mating ring, allowing themotor to turn more freelywith less mechanical drag. The increased clearance alsoimproves lubrication across

the wear surfaces of thegerotor star and ring andprovides a greater pressure-relieving flow path reducingpressure spikes. Flow isby-passed internally acrossthe star tips, reducingshock loads to the maindrive components. Thisfeature provides an effectivemethod for reducing shockloads to the main drivecomponents.

    Benefits:

Suited for applicationswith rapid stop/start orrapid reversals.

Reduces starting pressureand increases startingtorque efficiency.

Reduces pressure spikesthrough the orbit gear set.

    Applications:

    Harvesters

    Stump Grinders

    Skid Steer LoaderAttachments

    Machine Tools

Especially suited forcontinuous high speed/high flow applications.

    Also suited for applica-

    tions with high-pressurespikes from rapidreversals.

    Special Notes:

Volumetric Efficiency willbe reduced with the free-running option.

    Gerotor or Geroler?

The H series motor uses a Gerotor while the rest of theChar-Lynn motors use a Geroler. The difference is shown the picture below:

Essentially a Geroler has rolls added to the lobes of theouter ring of the Orbit gear set. These rolls act as a rollerbearing and reduce friction, increase mechanical efficiencyand reduce wear in systems with low fluid viscosity. Inaddition, the Geroler type typically provides smootherperformance at low speed conditions. The basic formula aguideline to determine whether a gerotor or Geroler shou

be used is as follows:20 x psi / RPM = SUS (use this formula to determine minimufluid viscosity)

RPM = speed of output shaft in revolutions per minute

SUS = minimum viscosity measured in SUS.

The recommended viscosity limits are as follows:

    1) A Gerotor Orbit gear set requires a minimum fluid viscosity of 100 SUS or the value calculated by the formul20 psi/RPM = SUS.

    2) A Geroler Orbit gear set requires a minimum fluid viscosity of 70 SUS.

In addition, applications running at less than 100 rpm shou

    consider using a Geroler motor.

30/106AEATON Low Speed High Torque Motors E-MOLO-MC001-E5 January 2009

    Introduction

The ability of Eaton hydrauliccomponents to provide thedesired performance andlife expectancy dependslargely on the fluid used. The purpose of this sectionis to provide readers withthe knowledge requiredto select the appropriatefluids for use in systemsthat employ Eaton hydrauliccomponents.

One of the most importantcharacteristic to considerwhen choosing a fluid to beused in a hydraulic systemis viscosity. Viscosity choiceis always a compromise; thefluid must be thin enoughto flow easily but thickenough to seal and maintaina lubricating film betweenbearing and sealing surfaces.Viscosity requirements, seechart below.

    Viscosity and Temperature

Fluid temperature affectsviscosity. In general, as thefluid warms it gets thinnerand its viscosity decreases. The opposite is true whenfluid cools. When choosinga fluid, it is important toconsider the start-up andoperating temperatures ofthe hydraulic system.

Generally, the fluid is thickwhen the hydraulic systemis started. With movement, the fluid warms to a pointwhere a cooling systembegins to operate.

From then on, the fluidis maintained at thetemperature for whichthe hydraulic systemwas designed. In actualapplications this sequencevaries; hydraulic systems areused in many environments

from very cold to veryhot. Cooling systems alsovary from very elaborateto very simple, so ambienttemperature may affectoperating temperature.Equipment manufacturerswho use Eaton hydrauliccomponents in theirproducts should anticipatetemperature in their designsand make the appropriatefluid recommendations to

    their customers.

    Cleanliness

Cleanliness of the fluidin a hydraulic system isextremely important. Eatonrecommends that thefluid used in its hydrauliccomponents be maintainedat 20/18/13 per ISOCleanliness Code 4406. Thiscode allows a maximumof: 10,000 particles greaterthan 2m per mL fluid,

2500 particles greater than5m per mL fluid, and 80particles greater than 15 mper mL fluid. Cleanlinessrequirements for specificproducts are given in thetable below.

OEMs and distributorswho use Eaton hydrauliccomponents in theirproducts should provide forthese requirements in theirdesigns. A reputable filtersupplier can supply filter

    information.

    Fluid Maintenance

Maintaining correct fluidviscosity and cleanlinesslevel is essential for allhydraulic systems. SinceEaton hydraulic componentsare used in a wide variety ofapplications it is impossiblefor Eaton to publish a fluidmaintenance schedule that

would cover every situation.Field testing and monitoringare the only ways to getaccurate measurements ofsystem cleanliness. OEMsand distributors who useEaton hydraulic componentsshould test and establishfluid maintenance schedulesfor their products. Thesemaintenance schedulesshould be designed to meetthe viscosity and cleanliness

    requirements laid out in thisdocument.

    Fluid Selection

Premium grade petroleumbased hydraulic fluidswill provide the bestperformance in Eatonhydraulic components. These fluids typically containadditives that are beneficialto hydraulic systems. Eatonrecommends fluids thatcontain anti-wear agents,

rust inhibitors, anti-foamingagents, and oxidationinhibitors. Premium gradepetroleum based hydraulicfluids carry an ISO VG rating.

SAE grade crankcase oilsmay be used in systemsthat employ Eaton hydrauliccomponents, but it shouldbe noted that these oilsmay not contain all of therecommended additives. This means using crankcaseoils may increase fluid

maintenance requirements.Hydraulic fluids thatcontain V.I. (viscosity index)improvers, sometimes calledmulti-viscosity oils, may beused in systems that employEaton hydraulic components. These V.I. improved fluidsare known to shear-downwith use. This means thattheir actual viscosity dropsbelow the rated value.

Fluid maintenance must bincreased if V.I. improvedfluids are used. Automotivautomatic transmissionfluids contain V.I. improve

Synthetic fluids may beused in Eaton hydrauliccomponents. A reputablefluid supplier can provideinformation on syntheticfluids. Review applicationsthat require the use ofsynthetic fluids with yourEaton representative.

    Additional Notes:

Fluids too thick to flowin cold weather start-upwill cause pump cavita-tion and possible damagMotor cavitation is not problem during cold staups.

When choosing a hydralic fluid, all the com-ponents in the system

must be considered andthe best viscosity rangeadjusted accordingly. Foexample, when a mediuduty piston pump iscombined with a Gerolemotor the best viscosityrange becomes 100 - 15SUS [20 - 32 cSt] andviscosity should never fbelow 70 SUS [13 cSt].

If the natural color of thfluid has become black is possible that an overheating problem exists.

If the fluid becomes mia water contaminationproblem may exist.

Take fluid level readingwhen the system is col

Contact your Eaton representative if you havespecific questions abouthe fluid requirements oEaton hydraulic compo-nents.

    Product Description

Char-Lynn spool valve motors distribute pressurized fluidinto and out of the Orbit gear set (Gerotor or Geroler) viavalve slots integrated into the output shaft. The spool valvemotors incorporate both valving and hydrodynamic journalbearings into a common shaft design. The valve section(spool valve) can be optimized for low flow, low speedneeds using a low speed spool option to enhance smoothrunning performance.

These motors incorporate the proven orbit motor principleto provide high torque at low speeds.

Motor shaft rotation can be instantly reversed by changingdirection of input/output flow while generating equal torquein either direction. The displacements available provide awide variety of speeds and torques from any spool valvemotor series.

    Features,Benefits, andApplications

    Design Features Spool valve technology

is typically used wherecompact, economicalsolutions are most needed.Spool valve motors use aspool valve to precisely timeand control flow throughthe orbit gear set (Gerotoror Geroler). Inlet flow isdirected into and out ofthe orbit set via slots inthe spool and passagesthrough the motor housing. The result is a very cost-effective compact packagesuited to many applicationrequirements. The three

    primary components in

the motor are the orbitstar, drive and outputshaft. H, S and T Seriesincorporate the spool valveand hydrodynamic bearingsin the motor shaft. The Wseries is similar except aball bearing is used for thefront bearing for increasedside-load capacity. Due toits compact size and highspeed capability, the JSeries is unique and utilizesa separate dedicated spooland spool valve drive. Allmotors utilize Eatons

technology except the HSeries, which continuesto use the time-proven Hmotor gerotor set. Thesemotors all use a three-zonpressure design consistingof three unique pressureareas: 1) inlet, 2) return,3) case. This provides thecapability to limit motor capressure and allows the uof several case pressureoptions for extended shafseal and thrust bearing life
