AAMU Mentor quality - Recruit more senior undergrads and grad students (rather than professors)
- Try to provide credit for mentors to earn through experience
ASU Long-distance partner HS - Have teacher take more responsibility
- Pick mentors from that local community
- Find other resources/community colleges in that local community to connect with the HS
- Do two meetings a month
o 1/mo mentors/coordinator go from university to HS
o 1/mo students go to university
- Use Skype as a supplemental meeting tool for students and mentors
Ark Late coordinator hire - Linking new hire with past employees to share info
CSU Student motivation throughout program
- Provide fun activities, especially early on
- Provide incentives for students (gift cards)
- Field trips
- Allow students to develop their own project topic (emotional investment in project)
- Recruit students from outside Federal Trio programs.
KSU Program timing (not starting on time)
- Being connected to existing chapters for ideas, reassurance – build chapter network/comfort for more open communication directly between chapters
- Work closely with lead teacher
- Creating her schedule/sticking with it – do something!
LSU Retention/motivation - Provide fun activities throughout process to maintain enthusiasm
- Include True Colors empowerment exercises as part of programming
UCD Mentor quality/motivation - Have program staff meet with graduate student coordinators to provide additional support
UNL Motivation; mentor pairing (students choosing same mentors)
- Provide more student-mentor icebreakers
- Allow for longer time before pairing
WVU Retention/motivation - Increase recruitment of students
- Be more selective of who is allowed in the program – revised student application form; one-on-one conversations with the student
- Have more meetings – especially venting sessions for students (sharing circles, one-on-one w/coordinator(s))
- Focus more on freshmen and sophomores b/c they have fewer commitments and are more enthusiastic
- Offer scholarship/incentive for every student that finishes
- Bring out intrinsic incentives/motivation for students, in addition to other incentives (Shawn Moore does “True Colors” workshop)
