Greetings Fort Worth comfort specialists! The heat is

just starting to break and hopefully fall will be upon us

sooner rather than later. Students are going back to

school (kind of) and football season is starting (sort

of). I find myself longing for a bit of routine in my life,

can you tell? There is a lot of uncertainty in personal

and professional lives these days but engineers are a

resilient bunch, so I know we’ll persevere.

I also wanted to draw attention to the themes of this year’s society president,

Charles Gulledge III. Each year ASHRAE has a newly elected president to lead

our society and set the themes for our operations. This year’s theme is “The

ASHRAE Digital Lighthouse and Industry 4.0”. The term “digital transformation” is

being used liberally these days and the pandemic has only accelerated this as

we’ve all been forced to embrace the virtual world. The term is beginning to

sound cliché, but to me digital transformation is about digging deeper into our

technology platforms beyond the superficial. One major example would be

Building Information Modeling (BIM). Most of us have been using BIM for 3D

drafting and the coordination benefits it offers, but the next step is to wade

deeper into the analytical smart features that take advantage of the rich data

sets that 3D BIM models can provide. This sounds pretty straight-forward, but in

my opinion takes considerable effort to move down the development curve.

We will explore this topic and more as we welcome new speakers for our chap-

    ter webinars.

I wish all of our chapter members a happy September and please let us know if

there’s anything you want or need from ASHRAE. Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    Scott West

  • September 4 // THE T H E R M 5

This month we sat down with past president Saul Martinez to discuss his time as president, how ASHRAE has influ-enced him, and what he’s up to now.

Q: Tell us about your current role.

Saul: I’ve been with BHB since before I graduated. They

hired me out of school, and I’ve been here since. I’ve

moved from straight designing to managing projects and

    helping train new hires.

Q: What was the biggest lesson you learned as President?

Saul: That you can’t do everything yourself. If you feel like “if you want it done

right you have to do it yourself,” you just can’t. There’s not enough time. It

helped for me to learn you have to delegate and be able to trust and help the

people that are helping you. When I was YEA chair, I was doing one task. I didn’t

have to learn that hard lesson until later.

Q: How has ASHRAE has influenced your career?

Saul: With ASHRAE it’s a volunteer organization. There are not really any sticks. It’s

all carrots. It helps you learn how to get things from people and how to be per-

suasive without the threat of disciplinary action.

Q: What Fort Worth restaurant would you recommend?

Saul: Right now my favorite is Zoli’s Pizza on Hulen. It’s just so good. On Mexican,

I’d say Mi Cocula. They have more expanded traditional Mexican that aligns to

where my family is from. I usually get the Guisada. It’s a braised pork with tomatil-

lo sauce and I usually order a quesadilla on the side.

Q: What’s something that you do for fun?

Saul: I like to cook and sometimes bake. I went [to a taco truck] on a Saturday

one time with my old roommate. We waited in line for 5 hours to get these tacos,

and they were just okay. I thought “I could make a better version of this.” I found

a recipe and kind of adapted it. They were so good.

Q: What was your favorite memory as president?

Saul: There were a lot. One of the things that I focused on was increasing the

sense of community in the chapter.

    OFFICER AND CHAIR REPORTS

    // THE 2020 - 2021 ASHRAE CHAPTER YEAR

Your chapter chairs and officers have been working hard to start the year

right. Here is a snapshot of what many of the chairs have been working on

    in the last month.

// GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT - Van Cashen

This month our committee had a planning meeting to

setup a strategy for the year. We also shared the

ASHRAE guidelines for safe polling places to the Tarrant

County Elections Committee as the election season is

    quickly approaching.

// AUDITING COMMITTEE CHAIR - Richard Watters

Another ASHRAE year has started with a clean slate – at least from an ac-

counting standpoint. Anyone who has run through the chairs of our Chap-

ter knows the special anxiety that happens at the end

of your year as Treasurer because of the Accounting

Audit that is done to hand off the famous briefcase to

the next Treasurer. It’s typically a two-hour event that

basically wraps up the entire year.

I grew up with a father that was president of a bank, so

numbers and bookkeeping were just part of life. I didn’t

have an allowance – it was more like a ledger. Bringing

that thoughtful eye to the Fort Worth Chapter seemed

like a good way for me to continue to support ASHRAE.

This year we had a very clean and successful audit, which is thanks to the

careful attention by Ashley Fiddelke! The entire Chapter was able to find

creative ways to keep things moving and to raise money for Research Pro-

motion. Congratulations to everyone for continuing to be generous and

    support much needed programs.

Wishing Scott West a very good year!

    OFFICER AND CHAIR REPORTS (CONT.)

// STUDENT ACTIVITIES (K-12 AND HIGHER ED) - Kirk Plum

This past month, I had a zoom meeting with the Ca-

reer and Technical Education Coordinator at the Kel-

ler ISD Center for Advanced Learning. We talked

about how ASHRAE can be of service this semester

and are in the process of setting up a visit with Centu-

ry Mechanical to discuss both the engineering and

construction sides of the MEP industry. We just need to

    finalize a date.

I have reached out to the TCU and UTA Student

Chapter Faculty Advisors to help engage the student

chapters during this time of limited interaction.

An assistant professor at UTA has reached out about having ASHRAE help

out for their “Intro to Architectural Engineering” course. Scott West and I

have both expressed that we would be willing to help to see how ASHRAE

could serve them. If you’re interested in helping in any way, please let me

    know!

// YOUNG ENGINEERS OF ASHRAE (YEA) - Dan Nguyen and Cole

    Guarisco

We are planning on hosting a virtual happy hour (BYOB) and trivia for the

September YEA event on September 16th, the same day as the ASHRAE

monthly meeting. We’re still finalizing the details as well as looking for a

sponsor to provide gift card prizes for 1st and 2nd place! Stay tuned for ad-

ditional details on the happy hour/trivia and let us know if you are interest-

    ed in being a sponsor.

// MEMBERSHIP PROMOTION - Joseph Florer

Our Fort Worth membership is holding strong at 291

members, with 7 newly reinstated or rejoined members.

We also had 2 new members join our chapter this last

month: Larry Simmons Jr. of Simmons Service Co. &

Kenneth Farmer of Building Systems Integrators. Wel-

come to the chapter Larry and Kenneth!

// RESEARCH PROMOTION - Allen Grammer

It’s time for a monthly report from the Fort Worth

Chapter RP Chair. Over the month of August, the

Fort Worth ASHRAE RP committee has been

busy. We’ve updated the Fort Worth Chapter RP

sponsorship program for 2020-2021, and we’ve also

established a new ASHRAE Fort Worth Partnership

program for this year. The Partnership program is de-

signed to allow a more accessible way for individuals

and Engineering firms to participate and be recog-

nized for their RP contributions at the Chapter level

alongside the chapter sponsors. The Fort Worth Chapter is also starting an

ASHRAE Research Memorial Endowment for Past President Jim Chatmas –

more details on the memorial fund and how you can pledge a gift in Jim’s

    name will follow soon.

The Fort Worth Chapter already has several Sponsors for this chapter

year. Among those that have committed to a sponsorship are:

    • Platinum Level Sponsor – Texas Air Systems

    • Silver level Sponsor – Control Tech Supply / Distech Controls

    • Silver Level Sponsor – Bartos Industries

We’ve also have one Fort Worth Chapter Partner so far this chapter year:

    • Principal Partner - Century Mechanical Contractors

    • Senior Associate Partner – Baird, Hampton & Brown

    • Associate Partner – Gerald Maloney / Maloney Associates

Thanks in large part to our Partners and Sponsors, the Fort Worth Chapter

will be able to commit at least $10,000 to ASHRAE Research so far this year,

and that number continues to grow. We cannot thank our sponsors and

    partners enough for their generosity!

If you would like to support ASHRAE Research that moves our industry for-

ward, please contact me at [email protected].

    // REFRIGERATION - Open Position

Our refrigeration chair recently left Fort Worth for a new opportunity, so we

are looking for a person to take over as the Refrigeration chair. If you are

    TAKE-OUT BINGO

During this last year, life has been anything but normal, specifically when it

comes to eating out. Most of us have been learning to cook better and

eat at home. While there is certainly nothing wrong with eating at home,

getting take-out from a local restaurant every once in awhile is a good

way to support local business. Therefore we will be starting a game of

“Take-Out Bingo”! Take a selfie getting take-out, and if you can get 4 in-a-

row of the restaurants below, you’ll be entered into drawing for a $25 Ama-

    zon gift card.

    Here are the rules:

    1. In order to play, you have to be a member of the Fort Worth Chapter of

    ASHRAE.

    2. To show you ate at the restaurant or received take out, please send a

selfie to [email protected] with you at the restaurant, or showing the

meal with the restaurant logo—some proof that you were at the restau-

rant getting food. We might even publish your picture in the Therm!

    3. Typical Bingo Rules—a bingo is 4 in a row. So a full column, full row, or

one of the two diagonals will be considered a bingo.

The Bingo card is shown below. If you’re unfamiliar with the restaurant and

want to know more about its menu or physical location, click the text of

the restaurant, and you’ll be taken to a Yelp link showing the details.

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR: Another day, another newsletter completed by you if you’ve made it this far.

I sincerely want to tell you, “way to go”. It takes a special person to get this

far, so please consider yourself in the top 5% of newsletter readers. If you

found the content to be dull, controversial, or a waste of your time, please

consider letting me know. I have the power to make the Therm better and

would gladly exercise this power. I’m also still looking for random pictures to

put at the end of the newsletter, so please share.

    Wishing you a fantastic September!

Picture and cake by chapter member Brittainy Tidwell. She’s been missing celebrating special occasions

lately, so when she realized it was almost her friend’s birthday, she knew she had to make something spe-

cial to show a little love from afar! Birthday cakes are an essential part of life, so she baked him a vegan

chocolate cake and it turned out delicious! She even doubled the recipe and made one for herself, so this

week has been extra sweet for her. She was skeptical about a vegan cake at first, but then realized the

most important ingredients are still there- sugar, oil, and chocolate. The main things missing when making

baked goods vegan are eggs which are just for structure, not flavor, and can easily be replaced with ap-

plesauce for texture and some extra leavening agents like baking powder and baking soda (shout out to

all the food chemistry nerds out there!) Overall it was a really fun project that helped them feel connect-

ed, and she thinks chocolate cake is always a reason to celebrate. Thanks for sharing Brittainy!
