From Your Chapter Directors

“If you got em, smoke em.” I think I remember that being said in an old World War II movie. When they had a break in fighting action, they would have you smoke your cigarette while you had the chance. The commander would say “if you got em, smoke em.” Well, I would like to play off that theme and say: “if you got em, ride em”. Meaning, if you have a Gold Wing, ride it!

We especially need riders for some of our chapter events. For the first time in years we did not have enough riders in May to participate in the Zoo Parade. That was a shame. But, we have lots of upcoming events that we can ride in. We have a Poker Run coming up this month, June 21st at Mill Village Fire hall. We need for all Chapter Members to come out and support this event – “if you got em, ride em.”

With all our Ice cream rides, dinner rides, Chapter rides, etc. coming up, let’s all make an effort to get out and support these events. Ask a friend to join you. Summer is short, let’s enjoy it as friends: “if you got em, ride em”. Speaking of ice cream rides, we have had some really good rides so far. We have had a great turnout at most of them (I know… all Gold Wingers like Ice Cream!). Thursdays appear to be working fine for us.

We also have our All Chapter – West coming up in July. This is going to be a great event. Here are some of the numbers I have from my spreadsheet (you really didn’t think I would not have some numbers for you?). So far we have reservations from 11 PA Chapters. We have 30 Campsites booked. Over 71 people have registered (all full registrations). Wow! We need to make sure that our own Chapter G members have all made their reservations. We have a very limited number of campsites left at the campground. If you are staying there, book it now (let me know if you have any problems). Either way, you will need to fill out the registration forms and get them to Kathy Weaver as soon as possible. “if you got em, ride em”.

Kathy and I are off for a ride down to Kentucky. Let’s have some fun! Ride em!

The Dream Weavers…Don & Kathy

Pymatuning Brown Bag Picnic Ride

Here’s the scoop on the Pymatuning Picnic ride scheduled for June 27th. This ride is designed for all Gold Wing members. It will be a relatively short ride (100 miles) with a leisurely pace and a very scenic picnic stop. This is a brown bag lunch ride. Bring your own lunch.

We will be leaving from the Burger King on Rte 832 (Sterrettania Rd) and I-90 at 10:00 AM on Saturday the 27th. We will head out 832, down 98, and over 6N to Albion to pick up our west county friends (Curt & Jane, Lonnie & Barb, Bill & Maggie, and anyone else wishing to meet us in Albion). Then we take a few secondary roads (all paved) toward Pymatuning Reservoir. We will pass through Pymatuning State Park in Ohio as well as Pymatuning State park in PA.

We will stop for lunch at the Jamestown Beach picnic area in the state park. This is a beautiful spot on the shores of Pymauning reservoir. We will continue our leisurely ride around the park and over the spillway. Our next stop will be at the Pymatuning Wildlife Education Center. We should be able to see bald Eagles and maybe Osprey there. They have a very nice museum as well. From there we will ride on to LeSeuers for …. Ice Cream!!! If you have not been to this country store, you are in for a real treat. After that last stop, we head for home.

This promises to be a very nice ride. Something for everyone – a relatively short ride, brown bag lunch and lots of beautiful scenery. But the best part will be sharing the adventure with our Gold Wing friends…

See you there….

Greetings from your Assistant Chapter Directors

Wow, here we are June already. I have not gotten to ride as much as I would like to with my co-rider, I have done a bunch of miles solo (see the Niehaus ride). I hope that that changes soon.

We have a very busy, fun, and exciting ride schedule starting in June with poker runs, scheduled rides, and charity rides. And it doesn’t stop there, in July we have rides and All-Chapters West, August we have rides and the State Rally it is all going to be fun. I hope that everyone can enjoy and participate when they can.

By the time you read this I will have the Ice-Cream schedule completed and on the web site. I can tell you that we will continue to go to different ice-cream stands around the area. The Ice-Cream ride on Thursday June 11th will be to Buffalo Wild Wings with Chapter O for our own Bike Nite, we will have a roped off area in the parking lot and the Patio will be reserved for us (in case of inclimat weather they will move us inside). Our (Cindy & mine) ride has been rescheduled to August 29th that is a Saturday. We also have several poker runs that I hope Chapter G gets good turn out for.

We are going to need some volunteers to plan and get ready for the State Rally games this year. I know that we had a great time at the games last year and I for one am looking forward to this years games as well. So have some ideas ready when I call on you to help with the games. I would like to have a plan in place before the All-Chapters West, and then after that we can really get down to work.

Please remember that with all we have going on that we need to remain safe. Keep the shiny side up and enjoy every moment.

Dave & Cindy

PA-G Poker Run Chinese Auction Reminder

More Stuff

First of all let’s dispense with the notion that the way to keep cool is to ride in a tank top, shorts, sandals and a pair of sun glasses. Not only are you exposed to the damaging, drying effects of sun and wind but should you have the misfortune of falling off your bike you’ll experience what it feels like to get the belt sander massage.

So now you know what kind of stuff I will be talking about for probably the next two articles and that is summer jackets.

What’s the difference between a summer jacket and a versatile three season jacket? A three season jacket will usually offer a good amount of insulation and often have controllable vents. A summer jacket will offer a good deal of airflow but very little or no insulation, and usually open mesh body panels rather than controllable vents. Summer jackets range from full, open mesh with no liners for hot days, to some with liners to block the wind and possibly the rain and others still with two liners – one for wind/rain and the other insulated for heat retention. How versatile you wish to get is dependent on the weather conditions you may encounter on a daily ride, week end ride or cross country tour. The old scout mottos “Be prepared” is most apropos and remember to plan your ride with protection in mind.

So let’s take a look at the features of some riding jackets keeping in mind that depending on the type of ride and season you may need to carry more than one jacket or a very versatile jacket.

Aerostch Darien Light – Priced at $397.00 www.aerostich.com Made of HT200 denier nylon Gore-Tex fabric and has all the Darien’s features including a pair of hand warmer pockets, two large pockets on the chest, one on the wrist, waist adjusters and a huge reflective patch on the back. The jacket is expensive because first of all it is made in the US and it’s the only jacket here with an actual Gore-Tex breathable membrane, which means it will keep you dry but won’t become clammy on warn days.

Alpinestars Force Air – Priced at $179.95 www.alpinestars.com This is a very sporty jacket. Its shell is made of 600-denier polyester fabric that has been coated with a thin layer of polyurethane for strength and water resistance. Foam inserts in the chest and back are flanked by polyester mesh inserts on the sides and sleeves, and there’s an internal mesh liner all around. The waist offers a pair of accordion stretch pleats and adjusters with hook-and- loop tabs at the hips. For protection check out the CE-approved shoulder and forearm protectors and there’s a pocket for an optional back protector. Feel the breeze cool you down on a warm day but feel the breeze on a cool day and you will be cold.

British Motorcycle Gear Adventure Jacket – Priced at $279.00 www.britishmotorcyclegear.com The Adventure’s 500-denier nylon outer shell is loaded with features that include a removable one-liter hydration system with water tube, detachable mobile phone pocket, front cargo pockets and a waterproof inner pocket. When it gets hot open the sleeve vents and deploy the zip- open back vents. Hotter still?? The sleeves fully zip off and/or you can always utilize the hydration system. If that’s not enough, use the pocket in the lower back to hold an additional two-liter water pack. With no thermal liner the Adventure is vulnerable to lower temps however the lower back pocket contains a lightweight black nylon jacket shell that throws over the main jacket and zips up fully to add some warmth when needed. It includes CE armor in the shoulders and elbows.

Brosh Cool Mesh – Priced at $159.00 plus $59 shipping www.brosh.com The problem with full-mesh jackets is that they can become too breezy, and the problem with liners is you have to pull over to remove or install them. Brosh’s approach is to back its full mesh body with sewn-in wide Kevlar panels all through elbows and shoulders areas and a more dense-weave liner throughout. As a result, the airflow is slightly more open within a couple of inches of

Page 6: CHAPTER DIRECTORgotomra.com/gwrra/pag.doc  · Web viewLorraine & Earl Knight – 401-723-5959. If you wish to receive our Newsletter via e-mail, contact Don Weaver. By signing up

either side of the main zipper but is slowed through the rest of the jacket. This means it’s much cooler than a body jacket, yet it does not offer as much airflow as open, unobstructed mesh. To compensate there are zipper-controlled vents in the shoulders, underarms, sleeves and back. There are CE certified, ventilated elbow and shoulder protectors, and EVA foam back protectors.

Cortech GX Air – Priced at $299.99 www.cortech.com This is a very versatile summer jacket. It has an Armor Link III mesh shell rather than a closed weave. It also features a washable Brazilian leather elbow, shoulder and back impact panels, so the entire jacket is washable. In addition it includes both an Aqua-Therm waterproof liner and an insulated liner, both full sleeved, which can be used singly or together. Adjustable sleeve take-up straps at the forearms and biceps keep it from flapping when the liners are out. There’s CE-approved armor at the shoulders and elbows with an articulated back protector.

Fieldsheer Air Tour Mesh – Priced at $179.95 www.fieldsheer.com This is a three-quarter-length jacket made from a fine weave, abrasion-resistant Polytitanium mesh. The shoulder and elbow areas are reinforced with a Carbolex material, and the Air Tour comes in either Silver or Fluorescent Yellow. It includes two upper pockets on the chest, two lower and two behind those lower pockets in addition to a wallet pocket and another on the inside, including one in the removable liner. It seals well which means the rider feels warmer than expected. In warm weather remove a number of snaps and undo zippers and without the liner the air flows very freely throughout the body and sleeves. This jacket offers real temperature versatility and some degree of rain protection with full air flow on hot days.

Firstgear Mesh Tex – Priced at $149.95 www.firstgear-usa.com This is a relatively lightweight jacket with a shell made of 250-denier polyester mesh for total airflow and a lightweight nylon perforated lining that also

allows maximum airflow, while in between is a full-sleeve, water resistant liner (with phone and patch pocket). CE armor guards the shoulders and elbows, as an EVA dense foam back pad covers the spine. Head out on the road and the detachable liner blocks the wind effectively, yet it’s so light that it won’t trap much heat. Unsnap and zip out the liner and the breeze comes through at full strength. Though light, the Mesh Tech offers a good amount of impact protection and style. However because its shell and liner are so light it does not provide much warmth and thus is a great jacket only on very hot summer days.

Joe Rocket Reactor – Priced at $199.99 www.joerocket.com This jacket is a combination of perforated leather with textile mesh, wrapped around a heavy nylon liner. Notice that the leather on the shoulders and forearms is perforated and the body is full mesh. Other features include sleeve and waist adjusters, two mesh pockets and a mesh pocket for a spare helmet face shield. Protection includes CE-rated elbow, shoulder and back protectors. The jacket liner snugs up well on cool days or remove it for plenty of airflow when it’s hot.

Please keep in mind that all of the jackets featured here can be thoroughly reviewed on the internet. Just do a google search and you will find a wealth of additional information about each of the jackets including how they are rated by your fellow motorcycle riders. I would strongly recommend that you do that with every jacket that stirs your interest. Also these jackets are available in both female and male sizes. I will feature 8 more of these wonderful jackets in my next article so don’t buy one just yet. See you-all at the June gathering.

Here is an interesting tid-bit - the word Google is derived from googol which is a verbal way of expressing 10100. Think about that next time you Google and its implication (you know megabyte, gigabyte, and googol byte).

Group Riding

As a rule, anything that moves you away from 100 percent attention should be avoided. Group riding has the potential of distracting you (and every other rider in the group), taking you up the risk level scale or away from 99 percent efficiency. Therefore, group riding should be avoided.

But it’s not as easy as that. Group riding can be a terrific amount of fun and a great way to meet new people and see new sights. Like all else, the risk-averse rider is faced with yet another compromise. You face increased risk in the form of distraction, so you make up for it with decreasing your risks elsewhere, such as speed or space cushioning, for example

What you have to deal with when you ride in a group is a mixed bag. Whooping it up in the rolling countryside with other enthusiasts can enhance and detract from your safety at the same time. You decrease your risk by having others there to help you if you run into trouble. They also add to your visibility and prominence on the road. There is real merit to the concept of safety in numbers. An errant driver might pull a deliberate bad move on a lone motorcyclist, but would he or she necessarily try it with a large group of witnesses? Probably not. It’s easy to single a loner out for malicious mistreatment, but it’s entirely another thing to be the deviant drawing attention to yourself.

On the other hand, a dozen other bikes and riding styles, the added mental task of leading or tail gunning a ride, or the thought that there’s a green rider or one new to group riding directly behind you can be a tremendous distraction. Add to that the mix of experience levels, the cumbersome nature of a group, the dual threats of peer pressure and testosterone, other rider target fixation, and the uncanny ability of otherwise sane and risk-averse riders to get in over their heads, and you’ve just added a whole lot of risk to your ride in exchange for a marginal amount of added safety and enjoyment. (The extra enjoyment can also be a distraction, albeit possibly a beneficial one.) On top of everything else, there’s the fun of socializing during pit stops, sniffing bikes, swapping motorcycles, watching and following other riders, and learning new routes and roads.

So from the very narrow safety perspective, group riding simply isn’t a very good idea. It carries with it too much additional risk for too little additional enjoyment. The tradeoff simply isn’t even. You just never know when the distractions are going to all add up and cost you a crash. However, it is possible, with a little knowledge and better awareness of the problems, to minimize the risks posed by riding en masse.

Ride Your Own Ride

The real hinge in whether a group ride is safe or not is the degree to which each participant can ride his or her own ride. Even though a rider is part of a larger gathering, he or she is still riding on a public road and is still responsible for his or her own safety. Just being in a parade of sorts doesn’t make the road any softer or more forgiving, other drivers any more skilled or less like to pull bonehead maneuvers, or critters like a deer or dog any less likely to choose your bike as its next life lesson. When riding in numbers, ride the bike, ride the road, and ride the way you would if you were completely alone.

Paul Wolfe, Chapter Educator

Experienced Rider Course

I would like to thank the 12 riders and one co-rider who participated in the MSF course at the Meadville High garage on May 3rd. It was a good learning experience for those who attended. For those who couldn’t get on the list, you can still do a course another time, either Erie, Meadville, or Warren. Warren may have more openings available.Hopefully everybody left this course learning something to make them safer riders, for themselves, their co-riders and those around them. The following are the participants: Steve Daley, Jim Morton, Guy Roussel-Dupre, Lonnie and Barb Sherman, Dave Ward, Kenny Woodcock, Dave Timko, Dave Groves, Dave Arneman, Marc Sanderson and Paul Wolfe.

May Gathering Summary

The Gathering started with the Pledge of Allegiance, then a Moment of Silence for our Servicemen and women.

Sunshine report was that Pat Hodgson is feeling a bit under the weather, Nancy Morton is continuing with her recovery, as is Duane Linhart. As with any of our members who are feeling under the weather, I’m sure that they would like a card or note from their GWRRA friends.

Don showed us the Handlebar Hangers that he received from the national Office, and encouraged every one to take a few. When you see a Goldwing that is not a member, you can hang the placard on their handlebars, if that person sends in the card with your name on it you get a pin and nice letter from Melissa Eason Executive Director of GWRRA, when you sign up 5 people you get a bar for below the pin.

Don has the miles from 26 bikes with a total of almost 1 million miles. Now that is a lot of miles. Don plans to continue to have fun with these numbers, then share it all at the end of the year.

Paul W. then gave a report on the ERC class that a group of 13 folks attended, 12 riders and 1 co-rider, Thank you and use your newly gained knowledge, and use it wisely. Good job everyone.

An extra big Thank You to the Beechwood for keeping the price the same, even though it was a special event for them, being it was Mother’s Day.

Ice-Cream rides have changed to Thursday from Wednesday, and the Staff meetings have moved to Wednesday. We will continue to move the Ice-cream rides around the area, so watch the web site and newsletter for updates.

The Chapter Poker Run is June 20th. The Star Touring Bug run and the Mill-Village Volunteer Fire Company Poker run are both on June 13 th so please support them if you can. Also get your Lady and Man things to Mary Lou for the gift baskets that we will be auctioning off to help raise money for the Chapter. We also need items for the Chinese Auction at the Poker run, so please help the Chapter.

The June 11th Ice-Cream ride will be to Quaker Steak and Lube with Chapter “O” as they will be visiting the Erie area.

All Chapters has a total of 55 people signed up for the event, 13 of the registrars are from our chapter, so we need to hurry up and get our registrations in. There are still 6 lots still available but they are going fast. So far there are 10 Chapters attending.

The trivia question was a trick question but the answer was Dave Johnson.

Thank you to Dave Timko for coordinating the High way clean up which took about 45 minutes and then we went to Bello’s Twist and Shake

The Erie Bike Nite dates are; June 5th, July 21st, August 28th, from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. We would like to get a group of folks to meet up with the bikes parked together, then check out all the cool bikes, and maybe use a few of the Handlebar placards. Buggin State Street dates for Street Rods and Hot Rods are; July 24th, August 21st, September 4th. Roar on the Shore will be held July 16th through July 18th.

Dave Groves will schedule a date for us to go to the Shriners Hospital, Kathy Weaver will schedule a date for us to ride to the Kids Café, these will be to give them a check for our donation to these wonderful Charities.

Mary Lou told us that she is looking for donations for the Walk for Life that she will be participating in on July 18th. So please help her out.

50/50 drawing winners also received a 50/50 ticket in the State Rally drawing:

Ron Fowle won $20. He rides a 1985 Blue 1200, He has had a blue 1985 1200 for about 1 ½ years, his longest ride was to Bradford.

Clarence Dingus won $10. He rides a 2004 Magenta Red 1800. They joined GWRRA in 1988 through Don Pasky.

Dave Arnemann won $5. He first joined GWRRA in 1997 but was not ready for it yet, and rejoined in 2005 after the purchase of the current 2005 white 1800, Our initial introduction was the sales man who sold us our 1200 in 1997.

Dave Groves won $35 in the participation award this month.

Ride to Niehaus Customer Appreciation Days

Don Weaver, Phil Wilkosz and I met at the entrance ramp to west bound I90 in Fairview at 2:50 on Wednesday afternoon and headed west under cloudy skies. We stopped in Cleveland to put on our rain gear just before the I90/Rt 2 split as the rain was starting. At a service area west of Cleveland we stopped at a service plaza for a break and fuel, the weather channel showed that the heavy rain was very close. It rained steady to about the Toledo area, we stopped in West Unity for the night at an Econolodge, they had a 3 bed suite, so we took it. Right next door was the 4 Seasons Restaurant; the food was good and a lot of it. It rained over night (I think that was what Phil heard, not me snoring). We were back on the road at about 7:45 cloudy but no rain and the day just got more beautiful as we went. The road got busy from Gary Ind. through and beyond Chicago. We thought that Jack got lost once but it turns out that he was just avoiding construction(right Don). It was smooth sailing south on Rt 55, but very wind in spots.

We arrived in Litchfield at about 3:00 local time. We checked into our rooms and headed across the street to Niehaus to get a pre-show view of the Honda shop and browse while the vendors were setting up. The Honda shop itself had every color of 08 and 09 Honda Goldwing except the limited edition blue. They had a lot of new and used Trikes also, but they did not have the new Honda Fury, they sold it the week before and the guy wrecked it first day. They also had a huge selection of Honda gear, accessories and Clothes. There was an artist that does motorcycle art there that we spent a good bit of time with, I think that I know what I want to put on the bike now. We had dinner at a Rt 66 attraction restaurant, then headed back to the motel to relax and play a dice game for a while to pas the time. We then got some much needed rest. Friday we were there bright and early, saw and talked to a lot of bikers from all over the country, Louisiana, Idaho, Arizona. We all got some goodies and stuff for the bikes. We all saw and got what we wanted, and we had already decided that when we were done that we would head home leisure like taking more secondary roads. Well about halfway home we thought that we might as well just finish the ride and be done. Jack said that we would be home about 12:30 am and we all voted to go for it, so we did. I pulled in the drive at home at 12:45 and 1362

miles. This was the first long trip that I have taken with other riders, and let me tell you that I had an absolutely fantastic time. I think that we should do something like this every year as a group. I want to thank Don and Phil, I had a FUN time.

Chapter Trivia Question

Last month’s trivia question stumped even the “experts”. Here is this month’s trivia question:

There have been 4 of our Chapter G Couple of the Year who went on to become State Couple of the Year. Their names are:

1. _____________ _____________2. _____________ _____________

3. _____________ _____________

4. _____________ _____________

The trivia question will be answered at the gathering (the question’s answer will also be available on our website, in the “members only” section). Thanks Don Goodwill!
