Greetings Sorors, Happy New Year and Happy 108th Founders Day. I pray that each of you enjoyed your holidays and that you took the time to rest, relax and rejuvenate. The holiday season is typically filled with gatherings, our calendars consumed with evening activities, dinners with Sorors, attending parties and socials; however, this year some of us did these holiday traditions via dinner drive-bys, zoom parties or over the phone. This new season while different is one we should embrace. Just like past New Years, we have made what some may call resolutions. This new year God has given us the time to do some of these things: He has forced us to be still in many ways and we should take the time to recommit to those goals and recommit to Him. The new year also brings us to the celebration of our great Sorority. On January 1 st our minds began to think about how far our Sorori- ty has come over the years. We have gratitude in our hearts for the sacrifice and the dedication 22 women had over 108 years ago to create a sisterhood of scholarship and service. Knowing the fortitude that they had, our love for the Sorority grows deeper and deeper. Gary Alumnae continues to make our Founders proud. Our chapter is continuing to grow not only in numbers but in service, even during this pandemic. January 13 th is here, and it is evident from the pictures on social media, the correspondence and programming from National and the work of Grand Chapter throughout the country demonstrating the power in our voice. During Sundays National Founders Day worship service, the National Chaplain Soror Vashti Murphy McKenzie charged Sorors to Do the Work”. She said we should take a chance on God but not to go at it alone. Sorors let us continue to do the work in Delta together. Let s continue to reach across committees for partnerships, look at the National and Regional initiatives to determine how we can implement them effectively and efficiently in Gary Alumnae. Greetings Sorors,

Happy New Year and Happy 108th Founders Day.

This new year God has given us the time to do some of these things: He has forced us to be still in many ways and we should take the time to recommit to those goals and recommit to Him.

The new year also brings us to the celebration of our great Sorority. On January 1 st our minds began to think about how far our Sorori-ty has come over the years.

During Sunday’s National Founders Day worship service, the National Chaplain Soror Vashti Murphy McKenzie charged Sorors to “Do the Work”. She said we should take a chance on God but not to go at it alone. Sorors let us continue to do the work in Delta together. As I sit in meetings and talk with chairs, we have so many great/creative ideas. Let’s continue to reach across committees for partnerships, look at the National and Regional initiatives to determine how we can implement them effectively and efficiently in Gary Alumnae. SOROR SPOTLIGHT

The Delta Gazette will be spotlighting sorors each month. In honor of Founders Day, we are showcasing a Delta D.E.A.R.:

Dr. Mary Malone was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1955 at Sigma Chapter, Clark (College) Atlanta University. Upon moving to Gary, Indiana, Soror Malone joined Beta Nu Chapter (Gary Alumnae) in 1964 where she served as recording secretary in subsequent years.

Soror Malone is currently retired from a long career in education. She worked as a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools and went on to become an administrator, a teacher on loan, and an adjunct professor at Purdue University (Calumet) Northwest and Chicago State University. She received her master’s degree from Roosevelt University in 1964 and her doctorate from Ball State University in 1975.

According to Soror Malone, one thing she loves about Delta is the sisterhood and camaraderie. With her nearly sixty-six years in Delta, she advises new and reclaimed sorors to “get to know sorors and members of the sisterhood and work to help to achieve the ideals of the Sorority.”

Soror Malone was married for over forty-five years to Rev. Dr. Hezekiah Malone. She is a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, the mother of two sons, and grandmother of three, one of whom is a gold medal Olympian in track and field.

PAST PRESIDENTS COUNCIL

Under the leadership of Soror Pike, Beta Nu (Gary Alumnae) Chapter sponsored a Jabberwock at Roosevelt High School featuring Soror Bobbie Jones and a concert at West Side School featuring Roberta Flack. She increased our chapter connection with Past Regional Director Barbara Curtis. Soror Pike was initiated December 1966, on the campus of Lincoln University (MO), Alpha Theta Chapter, serving as collegiate president of the chapter for 2 years. Professionally, she retired from the Gary Community School Corporation in 1974 and from Houghton Mifflin Publishers, after a 30 year career as an Educational Consultant, January 1, 2005. She has served in many capacities in the chapter, her most rewarding was with Rites and Passages, allowing her to conduct many Omega Omega services for our deceased sorors. She is a life-time member of the National Council of Negro Women and Lincoln University (MO) Alumni Association, a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a member of the Rebecca Circle Mission. She sings with the Sounds of Peace of the Calumet Area, volunteers with the Gary Literacy Mentoring program, and is a Smart Driver Instructor for AARP. Her hobbies are primarily reading and since the pandemic, attending Zoom classes. Soror Pike was the chapter’s Delta Dear of the Year in 2015 and 2020, and was nominated for Regional Delta Dear of the Year in 2015! She is knowledgeable about Delta and always inspirational with a positive uplifting word. Soror Pike is a pleasure to be around! This #Delta Dear Rocks! Soror Pike is truly an essence of a woman, mother, aunt, grandmother, sister, friend and soror. She can chat with collegiates as well as seasoned members of Gary Alumnae Chapter and we listen! Her inspiring wisdom is a magnet to which sorors gravitate. On March 1, 2015, we were reminded again about how special Soror Pike is. She was featured on the cover AARP’s magazine for their Smart Driver Course, where she has volunteered as a teacher for eight years. She prides herself on giving back to the community.

This month’s feature is on Past

Every first Saturday of the month, the Chapter provided hot food for the local community residents. The soup kitchen was a place where free food was served to those who were homeless or destitute. Due to the unexpected occurrences during these unprecedented times in our country and with the pandemic altering how we do business, the Past President Council wanted to provide food for the soul. Please enjoy as we present recipes from our Past Presidents.

HOT WATER CORN BREAD

by Soror Jeanette Pike

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups of yellow self-rising cornmeal

4 cups of boiling water

¼ cup of oil

Directions:

Place cornbread mixture into bowl.

Pour in boiling water to cornbread mixture, keeping it loose, but not runny, stirring as you add.

Heat the oil in the skillet (preferably cast iron). After making sure the sides of the skillet are covered with oil, pour the excess oil into the loose cornbread mixture and blend together, keeping the mixture loose by adding more water as needed.

Scoop out about 2 ½ tablespoons of mixture or more, based on the size of the patty desired. Shape into a patty and place in skillet. Repeat for the number of patties you want. Fry patties until brown on both sides (turning only one-time for each patty).

Remove patties from skillet and place on paper to drain excess oil.
