Chapter President of the Year This award will honor the fraternity and sorority president who went above and beyond their duties. Your nominee should represent the ideals of his/her chapter and provide a solid foundation for its members. Name of Nominee: Jack Sherrer Year of Nominee: Senior What positive changes has your nominee implemented in his/her chapter? Under Jack’s leadership, the Lambda Sigma chapter of Psi Upsilon has grown in both character and numbers. Jack inherited a group that had been “floating” for some time. Immediately, Jack began campaigning for policies regarding academic accountability and specific ways to achieve leadership, service, and brotherhood opportunities. As a result of new policies, Psi U’s GPA numbers have improved, individuals who are struggling have opportunities to tutor and assist one another, and hours of service have increased. Jack also inherited a philanthropy event that had raised a lot of money but didn’t honor all of its participants in positive ways. Jack, along with the VP in charge of the event, started preparing for the 2015 event right away. Psi U Think You Can Dance is now an event that raises awareness, funds, and builds up the participants and audience members. Based on the numbers alone, under Jack’s leadership, this year’s new member class increased by 58%, introducing 19 new members this fall. More than anything, Jack’s steadfastness during his presidency has provided a model for the fraternity that is rare among college students. Struggling through his own personal battles, Jack remained consistent. When he had to be the enforcer of academic, financial, or disciplinary policies, he always displayed a love for the brother and let him know that it was for the best. How has this person helped to promote the ideals of his/her chapter and Pepperdine? The four pillars of Psi Upsilon are service, leadership, brotherhood, and excellence. Jack’s time as president brought out the best of all four of these pillars. Jack participated in the majority of service opportunities organized by the service chairs and was quick to encourage that more can and should be done. Jack’s leadership style allowed for the members to be themselves, feel a part of the group, yet understand that the fraternity is something bigger than any individual. His servantleader style and humble approach have provided a fresh approach which encourages accountability and participation. Like mentioned above, even when enforcing policy, Jack has

Chapter President of the Year

This award will honor the fraternity and sorority president who went above and beyond their duties. Your nominee should represent the ideals of his/her chapter and provide a solid

foundation for its members. Like mentioned above, even when enforcing policy, Jack has

always emphasized brotherhood. Even if members decide to disaffiliate, Jack makes sure that they are still reached out to and cared for. Finally, Jack’s push for excellence has led to increased membership, participation, and accountability. Each member knows how important grades and dues are and that we are a part of great tradition at Pepperdine.   Why do you feel this person should be named the President of the Year?   In addition to all of the things mentioned above, after the loss of Brennan Tatem this fall, Jack has been tremendous. Even through Jack’s own personal struggles, when he learned about the loss of Brennan, he gathered the fraternity under his wings in a way that was more like a comforting mother than a peer college student. He worked along Stacy Rothberg to help organize the service remembering Brennan and then regathered the fraternity the next night to meet Brennan’s other family that came to town.   No other Pepperdine student I know has been able to handle the pressures of leadership, the sorrows of loss, and difficulty of bringing people together anywhere close to as well as Jack.
