A NOTE FROM THE TEAM CHEERLEADER
pril has snuck up on us, as we finish celebrating
with Zeke on his winning ticket at the Florida District Rally!!
We had eleven chapter participants join us, and we had a blast as usual!! At the Rally, Linda and I completed our MFA Instructor training, and are now certified to present an MFA seminar in GWRRA. Those that are in need of MFA for your levels, we’ll be setting one up soon.
While we talk about GWRRA as being an organization that is “Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge,” I’d like to emphasize a couple of those words.
The first word, is in fact the ‘first word.’
“Friends.”
I hope you consider all of the people you spend this much time riding with, eating with, laughing with and even crying with your ‘friend.” Friends don’t worry about the time of day, especially if they are ill or lost a family member. I don’t think anyone would consider a call from a ‘friend’ as “putting them out.” We are here for you!! Just like you are here for us.
When I had my mishap with the very large dog, Linda didn’t hesitate to call our friends, Ron & Cindy.” I don’t believe they thought of the call as a bother, anymore that we would had they called us.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the people you’ve friended and share a thought, or a meal, or a ride, or just a kind word.
In this crazy mixed up world, we need to be kind and thoughtful. Especially to those we call “Friends.”
The “Fun, Safety and Knowledge” will follow naturally.
“Happy Trails…”

common comment usually made in jest that we
hear from Gold Wing riders that love to hit the road, particularly on touring trips, is how often we pass H-D shops along the
route but seldom see a Honda shop. And if we do have a problem, it seems as if the nearest shop is a couple of hundred miles away from where we are or it's outside of store hours. Our personal experiences seem to lend some truth to this fact, but Goldwingers do have a readily available solution to this problem. Like many of you, we received the new "Gold Book 2016" in the mail this week. This little book is an essential part of our pre-ride checklist before every ride we make. A few years ago on a return trip from the Far West coming back home to Florida on a Sunday morning through Kansas, we did find ourselves in the situation described at the beginning of this article. Thanks to the Gold Book, what could have been an incident that might make a person give up riding turned into a three-day adventure of making new friends and acquaintances including a GWRRA chapter gathering.
But this is also a two-way street. One evening a couple of years ago during Bike Week, we received a telephone call from a couple sitting on the exit road leading to Lake Helen. As we know, there is nothing around that exit except Florida brush, scrub and trees. And it was getting dark. So now it was pay back time. Fortunately, within three or four hours and a little trailering time, they were back on the road on their way home across the state. How did complete strangers know how to call us? The Gold Book. One little thing that I did notice scanning the pages of this year's book. In the local area between DeLeon Springs and Sanford, listings of our active chapter members runs at about 25%. Now we certainly don't want to ask anyone to list themselves as contacts if you feel uncomfortable about responding to strangers calls. As well, if you are listed and receive a call from a complete stranger, make sure you have a safety back up if you respond. Also, I wonder if any of those other 75% GWRRA members listed in the book would also like to participate in chapter activities? Last thing, make sure that new Gold Book goes into the trunk of your bike/trike where you can find it when needed. Ride safe and have fun.

Ride SAFELY!!
which, in turn, makes it easier to slough water away from the contact patch.
Perhaps it is obvious, but to hydroplane you need a certain minimum depth of water under your tires and, thus, to the extent that you can reduce that depth you can reduce the odds of hydroplaning. How might you do that? By driving closer to the center of the lane than you normally do. Why? Normal vehicle traffic cuts a trough into the pavement where the wheels ride. Those troughs are essentially where motorcyclists normally track their rides. Obviously water depths are higher in those troughs.
I hope that all co-riders read the safety articles and tips we publish in the newsletter. You never know when
you might be called upon to take over the bike in an emergency situation and will need the knowledge these articles and tips give you. It’s not just the driver that needs to be knowledgeable and ride smart, it’s the co-riders as well. Having said that, I am not a very experienced rider and anyone who has a problem with an article I put out, please feel free to correct it. We all want to ride safe and
have the correct knowledge to do so.

oon it will time for the spring and summer monsoons and this brings to mind “hydroplaning”. This is my greatest fear when riding my bike in wet
weather. I have hydroplaned in my car and that wasn’t a very good feeling so I know I don’t want to do it on a bike. I found a tip by James R. Davis who writes The Master Strategy Group articles and thought I would share it with you.
If you know that you are going to be riding in the rain you might want to consider adding 3 to 5 psi of pressure in your tires. Note, this is not a suggestion that you inflate them in excess of the maximum pressure specified on the tire sidewalls.
The reasoning behind the suggestion is simple:
- Increasing the tire pressure makes its contact patch smaller. In other words, it increases the weight per square inch of the contact patch so that it takes more “uplift” by water to cause hydroplaning.
- Just as increasing pressure makes the contact patch smaller, it also tends to spread out the tread grooves

Most of you already know about my older brother Gonzo. He used to take some pretty awesome trips with the “Chapter Host” as I’ve heard them called. Then again, many months he was stuck in a pizza box, only to be brought out for a Gathering.
Well… this was ANOTHER Pizza Box month!!!
Hopefully, with summer coming, I’ll be able to get out and see some of America!

his article by JoAnn
Cox will give you some
insight into how our
friends in GWRRA can
help us when we need help while traveling.
How GWRRA Positively Affected My Life!
by JoAnn Cox, Winton, CA
I believe in giving credit and praise where it is due,
and on my trip this summer I met several people
who deserve praise.
First, I had a tie-rod on my Bushtec trailer break and
was assisted by an Oklahoma Sheriff and an off-duty
fireman on his Harley. They got me one mile down
the road to the Fort Thunder Harley dealership
where I was treated like royalty while they assessed
the problem and while I waited for my sister-in-law
to come and pick me up. Fort Thunder had my
trailer repaired in 2 days and had me back on the
road. They not only repaired the tie-rod but also
replaced a couple of bolts that were missing and
changed the tire that had gotten damaged.
After attending Wing Ding, I continued on to the
East Coast. When I was passing through Wilson,
North Carolina I developed a problem with my front
tire, on a Sunday (of course). After Rescue Plus got
me to the local motorcycle shop, I limped a couple
of miles down the road to a motel, spent the night
and returned to the local shop on the next day only
to discover that they were closed on Monday also. I
got out my Gold Book and contacted Jack Rose,
who so graciously called around and found a shop
in Rocky Mount that was open and could help me.
He then came to where I was and visited with me
while I waited the hour for Rescue Plus to come to
take me to Two Wheel Accessories in Rocky Mount,
North Carolina.
Then, while in New Jersey, I was in an accident.
Again, the Gold Book came to my rescue. I
contacted Kevin and Rose Sedlak, who put me in
touch with Thomas and Cheryl Lord, directors of
Chapter NJ-E. Tom and Sherry were on a Chapter
ride, but he gave me directions and told me to go
to his house and he would see me when they got
home. When I arrived, Tom's nephews had
gotten a trailer and we went and picked up my
trike from the towing company. Tom and Sherry
gave me a place to stay, fed me and their family
did all of the work to repair my trike. They had me
back on the road in two weeks. Without their
generosity and kindness, I don't know what I
would have done. I attended one of their Chapter
meetings with them where everyone was super
nice; some of the Members even offered for me to
stay with them.
I feel I have made some new lifelong friends
because of GWRRA and the Gold Book.

No one rides like this, right?
Hewey: Why can’t snails ride a motorcycle?
Dewey: Cause their eyes will wave.
A guy is riding along a country road, when a sparrow flies up in front of him. The biker can’t do anything and hits the sparrow. As he looks in his mirror, he sees the sparrow lying in the road.
Being the kind of guy he is, he stops, returns to the sparrow and picks him up. He carefully takes it home with him, puts him in a cage, the sparrow still in a coma.
When the sparrow wakes up the following morning, he looks through the cage and says, “S**t, I must have killed the biker.”
