Chapter FL1-K Couple of the year
Jeanette and Ed Carr
Jim and Juanita ButlerA little background into our lives as Gold Wingers. I have had 15 motorcycles since I was a kid living in Penna. I had a 1982 G/W when we moved to Fla. We now ride a 95 / 1500 which we have had for about 8 years. A Gold Wing rider (Bill Mann, FL1-H ) was also in our boat club and invited us to go on a ride with the group. After the ride we enjoyed so much, we decided to join the GWRRA. In 2013 we transferred from FL1-H to FL1-K Matanza Wings, Palm Coast, closer to our home in P/C.
Although we don’t ride as much as the others, we enjoy the camaraderie of all the people we meet. They are friendly, funny, and a helpful group of people from all walks of life.
Some personal information about us, Both born and raised in Penna. Jim in Pittsburgh, Juanita in Williamsport. I have worked all over the country in the nuclear industry for 50 years. Thirty five constructing the power plants, as an Over-site Project Manager, Fifteen as a consultant for the different power companies. Juanita has worked on my projects in several capacities, I think her favorite position was as a drug screening tech. She interviewed and screened every person who came on site. Which was in the thousands for each project.
We moved our furniture to Palm Coast 20 years ago when our home was completed. We continued working Nuclear projects and traveled across several states building the power plants. In 1998 I decided to semi- retire! Then we moved permanently to our house, and I would pick and choose the two to three month projects which I wanted, and worked about 6 months a year consulting. Juanita has a special love for animals, she thinks she is an animal whisper and can tame any beast. She just finished fostering 6 kittens and a mother for 11 weeks for the SPCA. One item on our bucket list was to visit all 50 states by the time I hit 65. Which we did 9 years ago. Another item is to visit all the National Parks in the USA, we have 28 out of 52 completed so far, we will continue to side track our travel plans if a N/P is somewhere in our paths.
Chapter Director’s MessageDanny and Kathy
Let’s have fun everyone!
Hello,
Boy has it been very hot this past month. There has been a lot of rain too. So the ques:on is how many :mes have you been caught in the rain on your bike or the car? I know I was caught in the rain a number of :mes on the bike this past month. But the raingear works well when you put it on. But there were a few :mes that I elected not to because I was headed home. As we all know a light rain is good to cool off.
Now a couple of things that I believe can help you stay safe in the rain. The distance between you and the vehicle/bike ahead of you should be a liFle more. Slowing down by using gears helps. Remember all those white and yellow lines painted on the roadway become slick when wet. You should try not making turns on them and star:ng and stopping on them can give you problems. As always remember 4 wheelers for the most part don’t change their driving habits when weather condi:ons have changed. So kept your head up and looking around.
Hope to see you out and about somewhere.

Co-rider, Passenger or Copilot? Are you just along for the ride?
How many of our co-riders have taken the course or viewed the various video presentations dealing with safe motorcycle operation? While being the second person up on a motorcycle is in most cases a passive role there are many issues that could be made safer with the proper action or reaction from a co-rider. While sitting back and enjoying the scenery a co-rider is also a second pair of eyes noticing things that are of secondary importance to the operator's task of maintaining a high degree of safety. Let's explore some of those issues.
Basic factors that the co-rider can ,influence are motorcycle stability, driver awareness, navigational accuracy, and stops for comfort issues. When the co-rider is comfortable and familiar with the driving habits of the rider they can anticipate each others reactions to various situations. When the motorcycle approaches an obstacle that requires braking and or swerving both occupants can brace themselves and shift their weight in the proper manner especially when they use the intercom effectively. This will also minimize the problems caused when the co-rider grabs the rider in panic instead of the grab handles. It will also be better if the co-rider has braced his/her legs on the peg or floor board to prevent bumping helmets during rapid deceleration.
Even though we use a GPS and are usually on the correct route at all times, "sure we are", a timely word from a live navigator may locate a Dairy Queen in time to divert us from an ordinary ride. Sometimes local traffic conditions and signage will differ from the 'up to date' maps that we are relying upon. The co-rider that is aware of our intended route can suggest alternate maneuvers when a surprise detour alters the intended path.
That second set of eyes can also warn of other traffic situations such as stop sign and red light runners, driveway traffic and jaywalkers. When in a parking lot the rider can concentrate on safe operation while the navigator seeks out a parking spot. Road debris, pot holes, raised manhole trunks, and other hazards should be seen by the operator of the motorcycle however the co-rider can reinforce the observation with a prompt via the intercom. As previously mentioned vocal prompting will help both occupants of the ride to react properly.
Co-rider training also teaches the method of bringing the bike to a safe stop should the rider become incapacitated. Briefly, the steps include getting control of the handlebars, shutting down the engine, steering to a safe landing area and riding the bike to a gentle stop that includes dropping the bike. While taking over control is a rare event it should be taught to all co-riders; it can save lives and minimize injuries.
Participate in and enjoy the ride safely, Bill & Liz Maxwell, Senior Educator FL1-K Matanzas Wings From CHAPTER FL2-R

MEMBERS-‐IN-‐THE-‐NEWS:
Sheldon & Mary Ann enjoyed a ride to Georgia and Alabama. Besides visi:ng friends, Sheldon wanted to check out the “dragon.” They enjoyed their trip.
Gordon & Dena enjoyed their 1st Wing Ding despite the constant rain. Gordon said the rain was “helpful” because he learned how to protect his trailer bulbs from ge]ng wet. They really enjoyed the vendors – lots of items to encourage them to “open their wallets.”
Bob F. & Bonnie kept busy at Wing Ding with seminars and some riding despite the rain. This was Bonnie’s first big trip and Bob said she was an excellent rider although she didn’t like the strong winds on the return trip. CONGRATULATIONS, Bonnie!
Mark & Effie were at Wing Ding but we didn’t “discover” each other un:l closing ceremonies. Large Venue! They were able to enjoy riding the mountains before they returned home.
Jim & Juanita will miss our September gathering, but for a happy reason. They will be in PA to aFend Juanita’s 50th high school reunion. Have a grand :me and give us all the details when you return.
Chuck M. said he has the best of two worlds – camping and riding. He and Linda enjoyed RV trips to Indiana, Michigan, and the North East. With a lig on the back, he has use of his Goldwing at stops. They are looking forward to more traveling fun.
Anne?e T. rode with us to Apopka and Dunnellon gatherings this month. THANKS! She wants to make more GW friends so she can enjoy :me at rallies. Each of these events provided many opportuni:es to “meet & greet” as mul:ple chapters were represented each :me.
Ed & I have decided that Florida it a great place to be during the “dog days of summer”. Last summer while in Indiana and Michigan for two weeks, the temperatures were humid and near 100 while Florida was cooler in the low 90s. It’s easy to avoid the heat by riding early or late and by taking shorter trips. Also, we enjoy aFending a lot of gatherings/events and 4-‐wheeling to visit GW friends is a good way to avoid excessive heat and the rain.
! Aug 4th to Aug 10th was a great last week before school began for me,. I went with Jeanette and Ed to a couple of other chapter meetings, FL1-R and FL1-W. Thursday, (8/8/13), we went in four wheels to FL1-R due to the rain. I met several new friends at this meeting. I met Rick and Nan Northrop, District Rider Education and Joe & Harriet from Tampa, and several members from FL1-R, (Highway, Sarg. , John, Tod and many more). Oh, by the way, I won one of the $25.00 dollars 50/25/25 drawings. Yeah! This is a small chapter and I was glad to be a part of their meeting. It is interesting to see how other chapters operate their meetings. ! Saturday the 10th began with a chapter FL1-K ride to St. Augustine for breakfast at Oasis. Here we had several members of our chapter that joined us; Bill Maxwell, John Organ, Jim & Juanita Butler, Mark & Effie Lasoff, Ed & Jeanette Carr, Danny McIlrath, Michael & Annette Thompson, Bill Brattian, Gordon Campbell & Dena West, Joe Pomerleau, and Bruce & Alice Hopkins. We were joined by some members from the Jacksonville chapter FL1-J, JJ Hammon, Ed Gresham, and L Williams. After breakfast I made arrangements to meet with Ed & Jeanette to go to FL1-W. We had another wet ride to Apopka’s meeting. The ride over to Apopka was a beautiful ride with lots of interesting sights, and spots of heavy rain; Ed, Jeanette, and myself got soaked. Yes, we had on rain gear the first time, but had removed it thinking we were clear. Surprise! We weren’t it poured again without the gear. But we were dry by the time we arrived for eating and the meeting at 4:30 PM. This chapter was a double point month. So it was very crowed. We met at Perkins and took two rooms. Guess what... I won one of the 50/25/25 drawings at $62.00 again. I have had great company, outstanding luck, learned some new information, and I got to make some new friends I met Bob and Nan Shrader, our Senior Region A Directors, and members from several other chapters. Apopka had a great turn out for their meeting. I also meet Smithy from the drill team. I’m looking forward to seeing them at Biketoberfeast in October. At the meeting there was a motorcycle officer who spoke about laws for motorcycle riders in the state of Florida. One point made by the officer was that we need to watch were we are wanting to go. Turn our heads when driving. Even for u-turns watch where you want to go. He also stated that it is the law to wear eye protection even if you have a windshield. However, I looked on line for Florida state laws; they state: “All riders must have some sort of eye protection, such as goggles or glasses, or have a windshield on the bike.”
copied from web page (http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/motorcycle-license.php).Helmets are required unless you can prove that you have $10,000.00 personal injury insurance, and that you must drive with headlights on at all times. It was very informative. After the meeting preparing to go home we picked up a couple of other riders. Being a member of GWRRA gives people a chance to ride to interesting places, meet interesting people, and learn more about riding motorcycles in order to stay safe. Our motto friends riding for fun, safety, and knowledge is a motto to live by, ride by, and have fun making friends. ! I enjoyed going with Ed & Jeanette Carr. Hoping I can tag along with them more as time permits.

Well gang, it's just about rally time! That's the Region “A” rally at the beautiful Lakepoint Lodge in Eufaula, AL. By the time you read this,
the rally will be but about 10 days away. We kick things off on September 12th (Thursday) and rally through Saturday the 14th. Things are looking
good; our vendor list looks impressive for a rally our size, pre-registrations are looking good and the Lakepoint lodge is full. All we need now is good
weather for the week of the 9th through the 15th. We'd also like to have some more delegates, because without you folks, it isn't a rally! Even if you
can't pre-register, come on out and join us for a day or as much time as you can. Remember that for those that are full registered we are serving a great
BBQ sit-down dinner in the Lodge Ballroom on Thursday evening. On Friday we have an ice cream social in conjunction with our Talent Show and a
police escorted lighted night ride from the Lakepoint Lodge into downtown Eufaula and back. We also have a wide variety of quality vendors providing
about anything you'll need. This is just a good old fashioned GWRRA rally so join us for a good time and lots of fun! We hope to see you there. The
cut-off day for pre-registration is September 5th, but you can register on site, of course.
Nan and I are proud to say that we have attained Life Member status in GWRRA. We joined in 1993 and are pleased to have completed our
20th year of active participation. We've met more great folks and made more long lasting friendships in GWRRA than we ever thought possible. It's
sure been a great ride and we look forward to many more great Gold Winging years.
We know this is still 3 months away, but our Region “A" Officers Meeting will be held at the Lakepoint Lodge December 6th-8th. We ask that
everyone arrive on Friday evening (the 6th) and be ready to convene on Saturday morning in the Riverside Rooms at the Lodge. We will meet all day
Saturday, and conclude on Sunday the 8th with a half-day session, departing for home by no later than noon. Reservations can be made under group
number 2246. The rates are the same as last year (double queen $65.47, king is $77.40) This is a legitimate District business expense for your staffs.
We'll make it fun and enjoyable (maybe even a different format this year) so please make your arrangements to be there. We ask that all District
Directors, Assistant District Directors, Ride Educators, Leadership Trainers, Membership Enhancement Coordinators, Motorist Awareness
Coordinators, Medic First Aid Coordinators and Treasurers attend. We will do our best to make it worth your time. Thanks!
We recruited quite a few new members to GWRRA at Wing Ding 35. Their names and info are beginning to appear on the ARLs. District
Directors and MECs, please be sure that all these folks are contacted by their respective Chapters. If the closest Chapter is in trouble and you want to
have another Chapter make the contact, that is up to you, but please ensure that someone reaches out to them. As we have discussed many times in the
past, there's not much we can do to retain a member who sold their Gold Wing, has health problems or is experiencing personal financial difficulties and
can't afford the Gold Wing life style anymore. But New Members who are joining us don't have these issues so it's up to us to get them involved and
having a good time. Please don't let these folks get lost; call 'em on the phone and persuade them to attend a Chapter event. Then show them all the
great fun and fellowship we have in GWRRA and they'll stay active and involved.
Nan and I hope to see you at the Region A rally this month and look forward to meeting you at a GWRRA event somewhere soon!

! It’s that time of the month again when our newsletter articles are due! Actually,I’m a couple of days late! Our hot, humid and rainy days continue. It hasbecome somewhat of a game dodging the rains and beating the heat. Hey, thisFlorida and we love it!With September comes the Region “A” Fiesta in Eufaula, Alabama September 12-13-14 2013. The Region team has prepared a FUNtastic time for all who attend. Florida is tasked with manning the Registration and Indoor Game area on Thursday from Noon –5 PM (Shifts: Noon-2:30 and 2:30–5) and on Friday from 8 AM until 5 PM (Shifts: 8–10, 10-Noon, Noon-2, 2-5). We need 4 folks for each shift of Registration and 10 folks for each shift of Games. FL1-M was the first to volunteer to help with Games at the Region “A” rally even before we asked! They will take the Thursday from Noon – 2:30 shift for games. Thank you! We still need more volunteers. Email us with names, preferred area: Registration or Games, and the preferred shift. We will confirm with you once we check the schedule to see what shifts still need manning. A new Region “A” Couple of the Year will be chosen in Eufaula as Florida’s very own Dana and Jo Voight will be completing their tenure. Wouldn’t it be great to have Florida’s District Couple of the Year, Donnie and Aimee Peters, be selected as the new Region “A” Couple! Florida can handle a repeat of this great honor! If you are attending the rally, be sure to support our couple on Friday during the selection process! Chapter FL2-A, Florida’s very first chapter, will be holding a party (35th Anniversary) on September 7 in Lantana. They will have FUN and GAMES and FOOD! Everything is FREE and it is Double Point Month. They do ask that you RSVP by August 24. Contact Cheryl Smith, [email protected] or 561-445-1624. Show your support for the first chapter chartered in Florida. I know you will have FUN! Gina and I will be there! October really gets the “rally” season in full swing. Start planning now! FL1-A, FL1-D, FL2-G, and FL1-H all have FUN events planned in October. Please support your fellow GWRRA FL friends. Also, our Mississippi friends have their District Rally/Convention October 17-19 in Gulfport. Anyone feeling lucky?! Mississippiknows how to have FUN, too, and would love for you to join them in Gulfport. The District website has the details of these events under the FUN tab! Don’t forget to start preparing for the January 2014 Chapter Conference. It is very important the Chapter Officers attend this event-January 4 & 5 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, Oldsmar, FL. We start early on Saturday. Plan to arrive Friday if possible. It is a new facility and should be great! We promise to provide as much FUN as possible and still get the “business” of GWRRA covered. Keeping Busy In August
August is typically hot and humid and wet, so it is an excellent month for chapter visitations. On the really nice days we go by bike. On the really bad days we go by 4 wheels. Jeanette and I started out Saturday the 3rd of August going on a Lunch ride with our Chapter, FL1-K Palm Coast, to Caps on the River, on A1A in St Augustine. The weather was perfect, so we had a wonderful ride up the coast and over to the Intercostal Water Way to Caps. What a great place. We had great food, great friends and great service while there. Leaving St Augustine midafternoon, we made our way south to visit with FL1-H2 Orlando in Winter Park. Arriving a little early, we were warmly welcomed by several H2 Chapter Members and folks from other Chapters. Chapter Director Judy Rubino was not there but in her place and doing a very good job were Assistant Chapter Directors and 2013 Couple of the Year, Tom Sims & Melisa Murray. It was a great Gathering and everyone had fun. Next up was Chapter FL1-K Team Meeting on Monday evening, 5 August. CD’s Danny & Kathy McIlrath had a very informative as well as a fun meeting at Houligan’s Irish Sports Pub. Come Tuesday, August 6th, we found ourselves riding over to Inverness for the Monthly Gathering of FL1-T. SCD Rachel Harris and her Team set the pace for a lively and fun Gathering. Everyone seemed to have lots of Fun. Our next target was FL1-R in Dunnellon on Thursday 8 August. The monthly Gathering was held at the Penn Station Deli and Grill and those folks know how to feed a hungry man. Having voluntarily requested FL1-R & Fl1-T to lighten a little, the burden of the District Directors, who are temporarily short one Assistant District Director in Central Florida, we wanted to renew old acquaintances and meet the newer membership of both Chapters. Arriving early at the Gathering and meeting Chapter Directors John & Ruth Jacquinet for the first time, we had an opportunity to get to know them a little and find out what and how much support they needed from the District Team. There were several members from different Chapter in attendance to show their support for the new Chapter Directors.
Saturday, August 10th was to be a busy day. It started out with a Breakfast ride to the Oasis Café in St Augustine with Chapter K. Who knew a breakfast with a bunch of friends could get so hilariously out of control. It seems Chapter Director Danny McIlrath had an event occur with a glass of orange juice that led to several different versions being told at the Monthly Gathering on Monday August 12th. I guess you had to be there or ask Danny which of the events was the truth. CD’s Danny & Kathy had a fun Gathering that was supported by several of the area Chapters. Thursday evening found us at the Monthly Gathering of FL1-H Daytona Beach. We along with a large contingent of Chapter H and Chapter K members, welcomed SCD’s Jerry & Grace Wells back from their vacation to New England. They had some very interesting stories to tell about their trip. A really busy day on Saturday 17, August started with a visit to Chapter FL1-G Deltona at the Patio Grill in Sanford, FL. Senior Chapter Director Garland Dennis was still a little hobbled by his foot surgery, but everyone had a grand time. Now it was time for a little education. We left Sanford and headed for the home of Rider Educator Bill & Liz Maxwell for a Team Riding Seminar. I want to thank Bill & Liz for the knowledge we gained from his class. Then, it was on to Apopka for the Monthly Gathering of Chapter FL1-W. We just love days like this. As we write this newsletter Article we are getting ready to ride over to Ocala, for the Monthly Gathering of FL1-F2 to see what CD’s Beverly and Steve McCarthy had up their sleeve for tonight’s Gathering.
Coming up in October is the FL1-H Biketoberfest All-you-can-eat-Breakfast on the 19th and in November is the Annual FL1-X Spaghetti Social on the 9th.
We hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2013,
Ed & Jeanette Carr, ADD’s supporting Chapters FL1-F2, FL1-J, FL1-K, FL1-R, FL1-T, FL1-V, FL1-X & FL1-Y
Six Gold Wings and four other bikes went on a 3 week adventure to Alaska and back organized for the
12th year by Palm Coast chapter member Mike Tuccelli to raise funds to benefit deaf babies as all children need
to feel loved and we want parents to be able to communicate with their deaf babies.
There was only a total of two hours of rain the entire trip. Practically everyday had highs in the 70s. As a
Miami police officer with 34 years on the job said "forget your riots and hurricanes ... This is the real deal!"
Applications are being accepted for the 2014 adventure. See the video at AlaskaBikeRun.com. See the sights

“Reaching Out,to ALL MEMBERS” International Directors of Membership Enhancement:Ed & Linda Johnson
Wing Ding 35 is in the books and Wing Ding 36 is in the planning stages. It is amazing the amount of planning, time, work, and expense that is involved to execute such a grand party for GWRRA Members. Unfortunately the weather cannot be controlled, but with Seminars, Vendors, other activities, and visiting with our GWRRA family we haven’t seen in awhile, we can enjoy the time and have “FUN”. Attending Wing Ding should generate new ideas and energy to take your Chapters, Districts and Regions to new levels of participation. One of the things Membership Enhancement was striving to achieve before Wing Ding 35 was to get all the Unassigned Zip Codes assigned to Chapters. The importance of this is to let Members know about Chapter Life and get information out to all Members regarding Chapter, District and Region Events, rides and activities. When a Member joins GWRRA and is never contacted or placed on a Chapter mailing or emailing list, they may not have any idea of all the benefits and events that are available to them. The first thought of concern is those who do not live near a Chapter. This can be a problem, but if that Member or Members receive your Chapter Newsletter letting them know about activities, rides or events the Chapter is planning, they may realize that the event or ride is coming close to them and they may elect to participate. This opens doors forthat Member to reach out to the Chapter Director and possibly meet up with the ride and meet some Members of the Chapter. Attending a Chapter Gathering is not the only option for Members. If your Newsletters are informative, they should include upcoming events at the District and Region Level. Talk about Wing Ding by letting all know the location, date and time so plans can be made to attend.Have you ever met a Member of GWRRA that says they have never heard of Wing Ding, the Regionor District Convention? That can and does happen and we can prevent this or at least make an effort to inform Members by being sure that each Member is contacted and receives information regarding GWRRA Events coming their way. Another thing we need to keep in mind as Unassigned Zip Codes are assigned is to be looking for areas where a new Chapter can be started. This could be a way to shorten the distance a Member would need to travel to participate in Chapter Life. As we help GWRRA grow and get Members involved, look at the last Chapter that has been Chartered in your District or Region. On the Membership Enhancement web site you can fine the guide ”Proactive Approach to Chapter Formation”. This guide will give you direction on how to proceed on making a determination if a new Chapter may work in your area. We can all help GWRRA grow and stay strong by helping the Members of GWRRA, our family, become knowledgeable about Chapter, District and Region Events. So what can you do in the planning of Wing Ding 36? Participate in contacting Members and letting them know what Wing Ding is all about, where it will beheld and the date. So when we all arrive in Madison, WI, we will be welcomed by our friends and family and meet new ones. In closing, we would like to take this opportunity to say a special “Thanks” for all who volunteered their time to make Wing Ding 35 a great success. Not only the Membership Enhancement TEAM, but the Leadership Trainers and Rider Educators. THANK YOU!
