Februay 2006 Another Ride Planning Meeting has come and gone. We had 20 members join together on Sunday at the Watt’s house and we hashed out the majority

of the planned events for the year. This year we have planned to visit other Chapter meetings, as well as some of the favorite rides we plan every year. We have some over-nighters and multiple-day rides on the schedule. Included are some new locations that we’ve not seen before, so I am really looking forward to those events. There should be something on the calendar for everyone’s tastes, so we ex-pect to see all of you join us throughout the year. To get us started in the month of February, we have planned a ride to Old Town Sacramento, and the car museum there, on the 5th, as well as visits to Chapter Q on the 18th, and Chapter K (including a visit to Jelly Belly) on the 26th. Keep a close watch on the monthly calendar for information on meeting places and times. Don’t forget to mark your cal-endars for the upcoming Region Rally in Elko, NV on May 25 – 27 and the District Rally on September 1-4, 2006, right here in Santa Clara at the Marriot Hotel. We would like to thank Danny Shewey for stepping up and accepting the responsibility of the Chapter newsletter and website. Both Verdi and I have held the position as Newslet-ter Editor for many years in the past, so we know that it can take a great deal of time. And I wouldn’t have a clue how to keep the website updated! These are important tools that the Chapter uses to communicate with the members, so it is greatly appreciated.

Lastly, at our last monthly planning meeting, the staff staged a coup and took this next issue out of my hands. For some time, we have been discussing changing our Chapter’s monthly meetings from Saturday mornings to Tuesday evenings. While Saturdays make it possible for other chapters to visit us, unfortunately the attendance by our own members has been steadily decreasing. It has got-ten to the point more people have been attending the monthly planning meeting than the scheduled Chapter meeting! Therefore, the staff has decided to move the meeting back to the 2nd Tuesday evening of the month, effective in March. I have yet to work out where we will be meeting, but I intend to speak to the management of Coco’s regarding this opportunity. We will still be main-taining the second Saturday of the month at Coco’s for a 9:00 – 9:30 AM pre-ride meeting and use this as a day which other chapters can visit. Also, the monthly planning meeting is being moved to the last Tuesday evening of the month to allow more time between the two meetings. Dur-ing the month of February, we will have two planning meetings: On the 7th at Casa Lupe restaurant and on the 28th at a location to be determined. All members are wel-come at this meeting and your attendance is encouraged. Now, as I slowly disappear in a stack of tax forms, I en-courage you all to get out there and use up some rubber for me. I’ll try to make the lost miles in May. Les

Golden State Gems In case you were wondering where your Chapter staff was a few weeks ago, we had our yearly District staff meeting in Bakersfield on January 7th. This is our only chance to meet in person other than District Rally and 130 people from all over the

state were in attendance. If I do say so myself, it went very well. Nobody fell asleep and each Chapter’s staff had a chance to meet and greet other Chapter’s and District staff. We have filled some vacancies in our staff, but there are a few that remain open, so if you are interested in helping out, let me know. Like each Chapter, the District has no re-strictions on what staff we can have, so if you see a need for a new position, bring that up to me. The ride calendar for the year has been finalized and is available now on the District Web site. Don’t forget to mark your calendar ahead of time for the overnighters and especially for District Rally. This year the California Dis-trict Rally will be held over the Labor Day Holiday week-end, September 1st to 4th in Santa Clara. The theme is going to be Mardi Gras, so it should be a blast! We had a smaller turn out last year than normal which may have been partly because of higher gas prices, but hopefully we can have a good showing this year. Just think of how much fun you had last year and tell your friends.

Speaking of this year, the 2006 Gold Wings have some VERY interesting added features. The most significant accessory is the first Air Bag available on a commer-cially produced motorcycle. You might think this is a joke, but there is a video going around that shows the crash test results and they are quite impressive. The test WITHOUT air bag shows a Gold Wing hitting a car broad side and the rider flies straight through the wind shield and into and over the car. The crash would have been fatal to the rider. The test WITH air bag shows the rider being restrained by the air bag and simply tipping over with the bike. The rider would have sustained al-most no injuries. Another nice feature is the availability of a built in GPS system. The new wings are bound to attract more sales than ever, so don’t be surprised if peo-ple you never thought would trade in their 1500s make the switch. This will be our third and final year as your District Di-rectors and Rick and I are looking forward to another fun and exciting year. Since we have already arranged the rally this year in Santa Clara, we are now looking for a 2007 location. We are hoping to find something coastal, but it can be a problem. If anybody knows of a facility that can handle a group our size, please let us know. Until we meet again: Ride safe, live each day to its full-est and don’t look back. Joyce and Rick Elmore, California District Directors

Hello Fellow Wingers, Man can you believe that January has already come and gone. My how time does fly and we didn’t even get in a decent ride, thanks to Mother Nature and her

unpredictable rainy days. Hopefully things will change and we can all get back on our bikes to enjoy the wind blowing through our hair again. OK—actually blowing over our helmets, but hey it’s the thought that counts. We had a really nice turnout for the Tour Planning Meeting and have come up with some great ideas for the upcoming year. Also, Thanks again to John & Debbie Watt for the use of their place for the planning meeting. This month we have a couple of rides planned to go and visit other Chapters. I hope we have a good turnout so we can make a good impression. The first is Feb 18th, going to visit Chapter CA2Q in Livermore and the other is Feb 26th, going to visit Chapter CA2K in Fairfield. In the upcoming months we have 2 trips planned, 1 is to Gold Beach in Oregon for the mail boat run, June 23, 24, and 25, which if all works out we will meet up with Chap-ter CAC out of Sacramento, (www.mailboat.com ). The other is to Solvang July 15 and 16. These are trips that do need to be scheduled in advance so please do give careful consideration as to whether you might be interested or not so we can plan ahead. So Until Next Time Ride Safe, Cliff & Lynda

What Would You Do? By Lynn Ryle CA-2S, CE

The day was one of those days that we get to enjoy living in California. Even though it was the middle of January the outside temp was in the mid 70’s and the roads were dry. I decided to take

advantage of this incredible day and take a short ride around the country side. It was mid afternoon when I headed out on the main street out of town. This road is the busiest road in town with traffic lights at every other corner. This is all normal stuff except my tim-ing was off and I managed to hit all three RED lights. For the most part I understand the need for lights, but shoot it was not like they were controlling the traffic of a major city. Traffic was almost non existent.

I went on my way and enjoyed an hour of easy country road sweeps and views of the local reservoirs. There were even a couple other bikes and some local wild life out sharing the peaceful warm sun. With my ride coming to an end, I made my turn to return to town and that’s when it dawned on me. If I was to take a different route back I could avoid those dang lights on 1st street. Again traffic was very light so I made a fairly aggressive, but safe and legal lane change to get into the turn lane and came to a stop, waiting for you guessed it, a RED light.

I sat at this light for what seemed like eternity. I watched as the light to my right went from Green to Yellow to Red and the cross traffic lights went through their cycle. Watching the green light of the cross traffic turn yellow, I put my mighty machine into gear and prepared to go. The light finished turning red and I glanced up to check my light and that’s when it happened, out of nowhere the light next to me turned green! I sat there with my RED light all alone, not one car in sight waiting to go. I realize this is not a life changing question, although I do think it should be one of the more meaningful questions of life, but I would really like to know who is sitting at the top of the hill changing the lights and ignoring me?

I mean I was now there for what seemed like hours watching

as the lights went through their cycles with no traffic in sight. Not one car, not even a person wanting to cross the street.

I backed the bike up and repositioned myself over the sensors in the street to see if I could persuade the mighty traffic gods to head my calling, but I was not having any effect on anything. By now off in the distance I could see a single care approaching. This made me feel a little better as I figured at least the car would interrupt or change the timing of the lights. But, the car went through the inter-section and nothing changed. As the lights went through another complete cycle my light was smiling bright as I sat there.

Now the question for each of you to ask yourself is, “What would I do?” As I figured it I had three options. I could continue sitting there and maybe a car would pull up behind me and the sensor would get tripped. Maybe I could pull to the right lane and go straight through the intersection and either change my route or make a U turn. But that would require me to go through at least one more light. The last option that came to mind is no doubt what some of you are saying by now, just run the light. I mean no one was around. I would not be interfering with traffic, I would not even be making a dangerous decision. I would however be breaking the law.

For me the decision was easy, I had been sitting there for a long time and it was time to go, so I did what any red blooded Ameri-can biker would do. I ……., oops remember that car I mentioned earlier, it had a RED Light all of it’s own! Now, what would you have done at the RED light?

Comin’ Thru, Lynn

Modern typical two wheel Motorcycles all share a common set of parameters relevant to the handling underway. To steer these vehicles typically requires leaning of the body to cause direction change, and some input to the handlebars also assists steering. Although these forces are tolerable in a two wheel application, in a three wheel application these forces become dramatically more difficult because of a geometry change in a three wheel application.

Although, this invention is capable of fine tuning the steering forces of any two wheel motorcycle, the real advantage is realized in a three wheel application as the effects and force required for turning are greatly increased. In a three wheel application, body lean is of little consequence and input to the handlebars is the only means to steer. The Invention through mechanical means, can remove any amount of force required to steer by virtue of adjustment. This causes a more desirable operating environment for the operator.
