MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Page 2: Chapter 8

ABOUT MASLOW

• The idea of hierarchy of needs came about in 1943 in a paper called “A Theory of Human Motivation.” • People are motivated to fulfill the basic need

before they move on to the other needs. • An example is if you need food you will do

anything to get food before you think about being in a secure environment.

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS

• These are also know as the primary needs.• Things that you MUST have live. • Food, water, air, and sleep are some of the needs

you have to have to live.• Maslow believed these are the basic and

instinctive needs.

SECURITY NEEDS

• The needs for this category are the needs for humans to be safe and secure. • They are important but not has important as the

physiological needs. • Examples are putting a roof over you head or

knowing that you have a steady job.

SOCIAL NEEDS

• You could probably guess what these are. • Being loved, belonging, and affection.• Having friends and a family will help you fill this

desired need. • This can also be opening up to work with one

another.

ESTEEM NEEDS

• When you reach Esteem, it becomes very important to your life. • This involves self-esteem, personal worth,

accomplishment, and social recognition. • A lot of people view personal worth as what

people say to them instead of looking at themselves.

SELF-ACTUALIZING NEEDS

• This is the highest level and the last one that you reach. • The needs are personal growth, do not care what

others think, and accomplishment.• This is where you max out your potential.• The better you are the

better the society becomes.
