There are basically three major phases
of a digitization project:
Phase 1: Preparation for digitization
Phase 2: Processing digitized
materials
Phase 3: Preservation and
maintenance

Digitization Phases
The main activities involved in the first phase
relate to the preparation for digitization, and
the actual process of digitizing materials.
Once a source of materials has been digitized
the second phase begins, which is concerned
with the processing required to make the
digitized materials easily accessible to users.
This involve a number of editorial and
processing activities such as cataloging,
indexing and compression.

End-users can use the digitized materials only
when the digitized materials are properly
processed.
There are other issues too, which come in the
third phase, they relate to the preservation and
maintenance of the digitized collections and
services.

Guidelines for materials selection
Whatever the reason for a digitization process’s
origin, the first step is the selection of materials to
be digitized.
Although the process is influenced by a number of
factors:-
i. the objective of the project,
ii. the target users,
iii. the available resources,
iv. time, cost and so on,

The Technical Advisory Service for Images website
(TASI, 2001) includes a set of guidelines for this
purpose:
Get the copyright situation clear.
Get adequate information about the image to ensure retrieval from a database.
Find out the various image modalities that are available in the collection.
Determine whether it is technically feasible to capture the information.
Determine who will use the images and how.

Management is responsible for drafting service goals
for the library. These goals include things like :-
• maintaining and strengthening excellent customer
service;
• providing access to accurate,
• timely information for all patrons,
• and keeping pace with technology innovations.
The rapid rise and development of digital libraries has
resulted in the need to develop tools and skill sets relating
to encoding information objects in this new digital format.

The following list presents considerations that developers must face when developing digital library applications:
How will the content be captured?
What quality controls will be used?
What standards will be adhered to for capture purposes?
What is the organizational basis for the 'collection'?
What are some design considerations for digital libraries?
What are the searching and access capabilities?
How might the contents be best disseminated?
What are the long-term preservation issues for digital libraries?

The costs associated with scanning existing
materials can be quite high.
Still images can be captured and stored as JPEGs, GIFs, BMPs, or one of the many other common formats. Most of these storage formats are "lossy" in the sense that they must leave some information out to meet the requirements for that format. TIFF formats, which are less lossy, are preferred for quality storage, but these formats must be converted to JPEG or GIF to use them in Web-based delivery systems.

Preserving digital materials presents real challenges, especially as we encounter changing formats and new standards for encoding, representing/ and archiving digital artifacts.
Combine that with the relatively quick degradation of digital bits on magnetic media and the obsolescence of equipment and software to read digital information/ and one begins to fathom the challenges pose by long-term preservation.

Committed to serve library patrons by performing
or assisting with various functions related to the
location and circulation of library materials,
which include:
i. Assisting patrons with general questions about
library building and departments, use and policies
and services and resource available.
ii. Loan and receipt of library materials.
iii. Re-shelving of library materials and library shelving
area.
iv. Receipt of fines and charges.

Installation and Implementation
There are two
main components
of DRC
Also, the database is an integral part of DRC.
Peripheral systems are required at both ends the
server as well as the client end.

The Server (serve for all files)
Responsible for maintaining the library information and material, and responding to the request of the users (clients).
The centralized system is easier to establish and less expensive to maintain.
Advances in distributed computing suggest that DRC servers be implemented in a distributed manner.

Library Database System
The database system of DRC is relational, and
an object oriented relational database system.
The elements of the database are objects. All the
library materials are a collection of objects with
relations between them.
