• Advantage: accommodate the rapid proliferation of books

• Usually combine with the Dewey Decimal System

Steps1. The combination of letters that closet

to the author’s surname.2. Places the first letter of the author’s

surname before the number.3. Places the first letter or letters of the

first important word in the title after the number.

• Founded in 1800, by the library of congress

• The system represents the main branches of knowledge with 21 letters (without I,O,W,X,Y) of the alphabet.

• Addition of letters and Arabic numerals up to 9,999.
