Chapter 3States of Matter

Section 1Matter and Energy

Kinetic Theory∙All matter is made of atoms and molecules that act like tiny particles.

∙These particles are always in motion. The higher the temperature, the faster they move.At the same temperature, heavier particles move slower than lighter particles.

Most matter on earth is found in 3 forms:1. solid  Definite shape and definite volume.  Particles packed closely together.  Slow moving.

Plasma  Fourth phase.  Extremely rare on earth but makes up 99% of known matter in the universe.  Particles move with extreme energy. Found on earth in lightening, fire, aurora borealis, and solar matter.  Different from gas in that plasma can conduct electricity.

Energy  The ability to change or move matter.  The capacity to do work.

Thermal Energy  The kinetic energy of a substance’s atoms.∙At higher temperatures, the faster the particles move.∙The faster the particles move, the more kinetic energy.∙The greater the kinetic energy, the greater the thermal energy.∙Kinetic energy also depends on the number of particles.

Temperature is a measure of average kinetic energy.
