3. 1.5 Industrial Development Co-operative movement
in Sangli District
World-famous Turmeric of Sangli
The country`s sole turmeric exchange in Sangli city boasts
secrets gained through a centuries-old practice - storing
turmeric in pits. These pits stretch far out in the open fields
of the villages of Haripur and Sangalwadi. It is possibly the
most unusual agricultural commodity-storage system in the country. After clearing the
loose soil covering the pit, it is left open for about two to three hours.
One cannot enter the pit until one finds out if there is any oxygen within. To ascertain
this, a lantern is lowered into the pit. If the lantern does not go out, it is safe to enter the
pit.It was this ingenious storage system, devised over 200 years ago, that turned Sangli
into a major trading centre for turmeric.
Raw turmeric sold by farmers is stored in these pits, eighteen to twenty feet (five to six
metres) deep, for three to four years. The pits provide the best storage facility for
turmeric, as the quality of the commodity remains unchanged. The turmeric hardens and
63
matures while in storage.Today, more than 90% of the turmeric trade in India takes place
in Sangli.
Sugar Belt
The Sangli region is known as the "Sugar Belt of
India". This region houses over thirty large sugar
factories. Vasantdada Patil, who served as chief
minister of Maharashtra for four terms, started the co-
operative movement which helped Maharashtra become
the most developed state in India. Most of the sugar
factories of the Sangli sugar belt work on the co-
operative basis.Vasantdada Sugar Factory near Sangli
city was the time largest sugar plant in Asia till late 90s.

success in producing classic vintage categories.
Wine producers in Sangli make distinctive, classic wines using imported root stocks.
The fertile soil of the Sahyadri hills region, and the long sunny days and dry climate

Like South India or Gujarat, Maharashtra also offers you different and diverse culture and
with culture comes its important ingredient – the food.5 Like if you go to the Konkan –
you would find the food with coconut flavor due to the proximity near the beaches and

abundance of Cocunut trees. In Marathwaada, you would find the spicy flavour of
Maharashtra. In Vidharbha – you would find the sweets especially the orange ones due to
the high abundance or oranges and presence of non-Marathi communities, especially
Punjabi, Gujarati and Marwaris who would be the 3-4th
generations.
Sukki bhaji (Dry veggie), Bharli vangi (Stuffed brinjal), Shengdana Bhaji (Peanut

3.2.2 Industrial Development Boosts Hotel Business
Implementation of the development schemes, lack of people's full participation in the
program, vested interests of the local politicians, wide spread illiteracy, ignorance and
poverty along with the prevalent resistance to the change and inertia of rural population.
These factors have formed an unbroken chain or a vicious circle of poverty.
In Sangli district majority of population lives in 731 villages, amidst the shadows of
under development and poverty. Majority of villages are still inhabited by the rural poor
peasants who have been identified as small and marginal farmers, farm tenants, share
croppers, landless workers including indigenous artisans. Field observation has shown
that land still plays a pivotal position in the economic structure of the study region. The
present study concerns such a people of rural sector of Sangli district especially in the
context of the functioning of the Rural Development Programme. The study is directed to
assess the impact of the programme of Rural Development on the beneficiaries in
selected villages of Sangli district especially in terms of rural reconstruction. In the
present study we also studied with growth, SGSY Scheme Swarnjayanti Gram Swarojgar
Yojana (SGSY). SGSY play an important role in the developing of rural area in Sangli
District.
In April 1999 Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) and allied programmes
such as Training of Rural Youth for Self Employment (TRYSEM), Development of
Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) and Million Well Scheme (MWs) have
been restructured into a single Self-Employment Programme called the Swaranjayanti
Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY). It is the result of such latest review and restructuring
of programmes. The SGSY is different from earlier programmes in terms of strategy
envisaged for implementation and has been conceived as a holistic programme of Self
Employment. This programme is basically a Self- Employment Programme.
