IADC Launches Gateway™ Program
The Workforce Attraction and Development
Initiative (WADI), which represents the
development phase for new programs
initiated by IADC’s Workforce Development
Committee, has launched its first program:
Gateway™.
The first training track within the Gateway™
program is called Introduction to Oil & Gas.
This track is intended to help companies
connect with colleges and training
providers to attract, hire, train, and promote
onshore and offshore O&G workers
worldwide.
Within this Introduction to Oil and Gas track,
the colleges and other organizations recruit
and screen potential candidates for entry-
level rig positions and then prepare them for
employment in the O&G industry. The
current program offers a standard baseline
curriculum comprising RigPass, Awareness-
level well control, a general introduction to
the industry, behavioral training (human
factors), a module on rig life, technical
math, rigging basics, electrical and fluid
safety, industrial practices, and considerable
hands-on training. This training track is
designed to better prepare new employees
for working on a rig, thereby helping
companies to improve the safety culture in
the field while reducing the turnover rate.
If you or your organization want more
information about Gateway or want to
apply for accreditation, please visit
http://www.iadc.org/gateway/ to
download the form and once completed,
email it to [email protected].
Yesterday’s expertise. Today’s needs.
Tomorrow’s potential.
The drilling industry faces a unique
challenge today when it comes to recruiting
the right people for the right roles.
An entire generation of experienced and
specialized workers is retiring, taking with
them their expertise. The modern drilling
workforce is training to fill these open roles,
while also keeping up with present-day
changes and growth. Demand for more
workers and a higher level of technological
skills is increasing.
IADC’s Gateway™ program brings industry
and educational institutions together to
strengthen the ability to find new
employees, but also ensure those people are
prepared for life on a rig, for contributing to
the safety culture, and for achieving
competence faster.

“I believe that having been in the industry for
over 35 years and conducted WellCAP
courses since 2010, the Well Sharp courses
have been a huge leap forward.

terms of manufacturing facilities covering

Survival Systems International
Dr. Douglas Leith CEng MIET
Creative Director | STC Global
Douglas has the rare combination of both
left and right brain abilities - the technical
rigidity of his formal engineering
background is intertwined with a creative
eye for design and simplicity which has seen
him create a multitude of engaging process
designs and technical initiatives. His focus is
about helping people go from ‘complexity
to clarity’.
Douglas was instrumental in establishing the
‘Designed For Business’ stream of activity
within STC Global. This approach has been
deployed in a wide range of situations
(project management processes, business
processes, organisational initiatives) across
the Energy industry (working with Operators,
Contractors, and Supply Chain businesses).
28 years working for Survival Systems
International, part of my job role now is to
provide regulatory support to both the
company and our clients.
I currently represent Survival Systems
International at the International Lifesaving
Appliance manufacturers Association
(ILAMA) and Safety Equipment Advisory
Committee (SEAC)
I have been an active attendee at the
International Maritime Organisation (IMO)
representing the ILAMA NGO delegation
and as a ‘Lifeboat Advisor’ for the maritime
administration of Dominica for the last 15
years.
There is no doubt that Surface Engineering &
Advanced Coatings (SEAC) technologies
are a critical enabler of the UAE’s global
competitive advantage in advanced manu-
facturing, especially in the Oil and Gas
industry.
The value of advanced coatings applied in
the Middle East, Advanced Manufacturing
Supply Chain is around $17bn, affecting
products worth more than $215bn in sectors
worth over $370bn, whilst SEAC technologies
affect products worth $1800bn in the EU.
This short presentation looks at how the latest
developments in Surface Engineering as
“SMART Coatings” deal with some of the
most challenging off-shore environments
encountered in the Oil and Gas Industry.
The presentation aims to:
• Define the Off-shore Operating
Environment by Zone
– Above (atmospheric)
– In and Out (Intertidal)
– Below (Subterranean)
• Provide some examples of SMART
Coating applications in each of these Zones
– Dealing with complex environments
– Use of SMART inorganic sealants to
extend the operational performance and
life expectancy of oil field tools and
structures.
Maersk Training’s new regional facility has
recently hosted one of the regions first IADC
WellSharp courses since the new updates
from WellCAP to WellSharp were introduced
on the 1st November.
The first course was a WellSharp Supervisory
level course with a WellSharp Driller course
held immediately after.
The onsite instructor provided insight into the
benefits of the WellSharp syllabus along with
a The WellSharp course now
offers Global Credibility as
the course is inde-
pendently proctored with
no involvement from the
instructors. The practical
grading sheet is more
challenging for the
delegates meaning that
only a well prepared
delegate will succeed. The
WellSharp course now
covers more topics taking
into account the recom-
mendation from the IOGP
and the clear definition of
simulator time is also a
positive element”.For more information or enquiries please
