ght the fires! Those of us who fly know that the benefits arery real, but we know this only because we fly. It’s more fun,
ss hassle, more convenient (fly to where you’re going, nothere the airlines are going) and infinitely more rewarding. Yes,
s more expensive, a lot more expensive, than going via Sunountry or Delta, but it’s worth the expense!
nderstanding this is the key to keeping general aviation alive.hat’s how we capture new pilots. With our Eagles and Youngagles programs, we take the young and old who are alreadylots in their heart of hearts and we give them opportunities tonnect with that dream and create ways to take that image ofem flying, lying dormant, and make it real. Our job is to helpem realize that flying is within their reach and then find waysconnect the dreamer and the dream.

Plans are ine works for various chapter fly-outs, fly-in camp-outs, a pokern, etc., that will present opportunities for our nonflying mem-rs to “get high”. AOPA ASI Seminar April 19th

We spend time training for them, but real-world emergencies are rare enough that it’s easy to get complacent. They don’t always happen to “other pilots,” though, and preparation can make a big difference whehings don’t go as planned:
What if you lose 500 rpm during takeoff, but the engine is running smoothly?
What if the ammeter drops to zero during a flight in IMC?
What if your left aileron develops a strong vibration in flight? Our new seminar is full of expert tips on handling those “up here, but wishing you were down there” scenos. We focus on how to keep abnormal situations from becoming full-blown emergencies, offer advice onkeeping critical problems under control, and give our best advice on off -airport landings.
Cindy Carter
Originally from Pueblo, Colorado, Cindy Carter has been a full time flight instructor in Western North Carona since moving there in 1998 logging more than 2500 hours instructing. She is an active member of theWestern North Carolina Pilots Association serving as president for five years and program chairman for fyears. She was instrumental in forming the WNC Pilots Association Education Fund in 2010 which helps deserving student pilot reach their aviation goals by providing financial support. She taught Private pilotground school for 10 years at Asheville Buncombe Technical College and is an active member of the FAATeam. Cindy was named FAASTeam rep of the year for the state of North Carolina in 2014!

Become an Aviation Legend…and Possibly Rich!!!
Introducing the EAA Founder’s Innovation Prize! The goal of the prize is to keep the spir it of innovation
alive in the EAA community and leverage its creativity toward solving specific challenges facing the general avi-
ation community. The top finishers will receive a cash grant toward developing their product and prominent expo
sure at AirVenture.
The 2016 EAA Founder’s Innovation Prize is a contest to solve the pr oblem of fatal loss of contr ol accidents
in amateur - built aircraft through innovation. The contest is intentionally open-ended, with the only stated goal to
reduce fatalities from this type of accident in amateur - built aircraft dramatically over the next decade - 25% in th
next five years, 50% in the next ten.
Loss of control (LOC) in flight is the leading cause of fatal accidents in general aviation, particularly in amateur -
built aircraft. Fatal LOC events include base-to-final stalls, departure stalls, loss of control while maneuvering,
spatial disorientation, and more. The 2016 contest seeks ways to solve this problem. The solution could be tech-
nical in nature or otherwise.
The judging criteria include: 1) Cost to implement, 2) Ease of Installation, 3) Wide Applicability to the GA
Fleet (with a focus on amateur -built aircraft), 4) Effectiveness in mitigating the problem.
The top five entries will be judged live at AirVenture 2016 during a Theater in the Woods event. The judging panel is as follows, and these guys know what they’re talking about: Burt Rutan, Dick VanGrunsven (Van’s RV
designer), Charlie Precourt (NASA astronaut), Rod Machado, and Dave Morss (preeminent civilian test pilot).
The winning individual or team will receive a prize of $25,000, with $10,000 awarded for second place, and
$5,000 for third. The five finalists will also be featured in EAA media leading up to the final award. Initial appli
cations will be accepted through June 1st, 2016, and final submission of all material for consideration are due July
1st.
With all of the talented and innovative members in Chapter 237, I have no doubt one (or a team) of us shouldn’t
be able to say, “Show me the money”!

B-25 Work Party Update

I’ve included some photos of yesterdays painting session on the B-25, we painted everythingfrom the side entrance door all the way to the tail of the aircraft. Now we can start to put glass
back in the tail area of the aircraft and floors back down again. And gun stuff in the tail as well
as hooking up all the flight control cables running into the rudder and elevator systems.
Great bunch over here again two weeks ago. Had a lot of fun and a great deal of work was accomplished.
Let everyone know that the B-17 was run day before yesterday [March 15th] and all the enginesare running great. Thanks to all the hard work put in repairing and fixing exhaust systemsand clearing engine Wright ups.
