5 things to Know…I mean really.

• Late 1800s …..As Great Britain flourished economically as the machines of the Industrial Revolution made it a production powerhouse of Europe.

• As workers in these factories pleaded with their employers then went on strike and then formed unions in order to stave off the gnawing hunger of a Zombie horde…err I meant starvation rations….

• The women formed an especially vocal group and began to demand the right to vote; which is known as SUFFRAGE.

• These women’s rights pioneers were called suffragettes and had leaders such as Emmeline Pankhurst .

• Pankhurst was a key figure in the women's suffrage movement. Pankhurst, alongside her two daughters, Christabel and Sylvia, founded and led the Women's Social and Political Union, an 1903 organization which was focused on direct action to win the vote.

• During the 1800 s and 1900s Great Britain made colonies such as New Zealand, Australia and Canada into Dominions of the British empire.

• This change on status meant that the former colonies could be self governing but hey they would owe their allegiance to the British King or Queen.

Napoleon III surrenders to William I of Prussia…

Meanwhile in Latin America…

• In the 1800s millions of people in Latin America (where is that chitlins?) desired the freedoms they saw others win…

• This desire for independence was primarily motivated by the glaring inequalities between the social classes in the Spanish colonies…

• Places like Mexico (1821) rebelled against Spain for their independence and others did the same such as Venezuela (1819) and Peru (1820) under the leadership of Simon Bolivar.

Lastly in the 1860s the US had it’s Civil War….(1861-1865)

• IN the American Civil War the Union (northern states) fought to prevent the division of the nation.

• Used the Anaconda Plan to “strangle southern rebellion…” and encircle the Confederacy.

• Resulted in horrendous casualties and results were a Union victory with slavery abolished in the United States….

• Approximately 620,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation, and disease during the Civil War
