Stations Activity

• You will spend time completing each station. Follow instructions provided on the station handouts.

• All recording of data or answers to questions goes in your notebook, to be checked later.

• There are 4 stations, numbered 2-5 (There is no station 1)

• Rotate to the next station when instructed to do so

Anatomy of Heart• Follow along on your handout and label and write

notes accordingly

• Different parts of heart numbered 1-15

1) Aorta

• Originates from left ventricle

• Main artery in body

• Extends down to abdomen

1) Aorta• Carries oxygenated blood all over body

2) Superior Vena Cava

• Large diameter

• Delivers deoxygenated blood from upper body to right atrium

• What color is this depicted as?

2) Superior Vena Cava

3) Right Pulmonary Artery

• Delivers deoxygenated blood to right lung

3) Right Pulmonary Artery

4) Right Pulmonary Veins• Carries oxygenated blood from right lung to the

left atrium

Pulmonary Circuit

5) Right Atrium• Deoxygenated blood enters the heart here

6) Right Atrioventricular Valve (Tricuspid)• Prevents back flow from the ventricles

7) Right Ventricle• Pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs

8) Inferior Vena Cava• Large diameter• Carries deoxygenated blood from lower body to

right atrium

9) Left Pulmonary Artery• Delivers deoxygenated blood

to left lung

10) Left Pulmonary Veins• Carries oxygenated blood from left lung to the left

atrium

11) Left Atrium• Receives oxygenated blood from pulmonary veins

and pumps it into the left ventricle

12) Left Atrioventricular Valve (Bicuspid)• Prevents back flow from the ventricles

13) Semilunar valves• Opening of the aorta and pulmonary artery.• Prevent blood from flowing back into ventricles

14) Left Ventricle• Thickest of all chambers• Pumps oxygenated blood into aorta all over body

15) Descending aorta• Part of the aorta that descends to lower body• On left side of vertebral column

Septum• Dividing wall between the right and left side of

heart• Atrial and Ventricular

Chordae Tendineae• “Heart Strings”

• Cord-like tendons

• Attaches muscle in ventricles to the atrioventricular valves

Chordae Tendineae

Chordae Tendineae• Control valve movement
