VocabChapter 11—Waves

Page 2: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Amplitude

• The greatest distance that particles in a medium move from their normal position when a wave passes

Page 3: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Constructive Interference

• Any interference in which waves combine so the resulting wave is bigger than the original wave

Page 4: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Crest

• The highest point of a transverse wave

Page 5: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Electromagnetic Waves

• Wave caused by a disturbance in electric and magnetic fields—DOES NOT require a medium (Ex: Light)

Page 6: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Destructive Interference

• Any interference in which waves combine so the resulting wave is smaller than the largest of the original waves

Page 7: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Diffraction

• The bending of a wave as it passes an edge/opening

Page 8: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Doppler Effect

• An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the source or observer is moving

Page 9: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Frequency

• The number of vibrations that occur in a 1 second time interval

Page 10: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Interference

• The combination of 2+ waves that exist in the same place at the same time

Page 11: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Longitudinal Wave

• Wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate parallel to the wave’s direction.

Page 12: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Medium

• The matter through which a wave travels

Page 13: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Mechanical Wave

• Waves that require a medium

Page 14: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Period

• The time required for one full wavelength to pass a certain point

Page 15: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Reflection

• The bouncing back of a wave as it meets a surface/boundary

Page 16: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Refraction

• The bending of a wave as it passes from one medium to the other.

Page 17: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Standing Wave

• Wave form caused by interference that appears not to move along the medium that shows some regions of no vibration (nodes) and other regions of maximum vibrations (antinodes)

Page 18: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Transverse Wave

• Wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.

Page 19: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Trough

• The lowest part of a transverse wave

Page 20: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Wave

• A disturbance that carries energy through matter and space

Page 21: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Wavelength

• The distance between ant 2 successive identical parts of a wave.

Page 22: Chapter 11 Vocab 9th Grade--Waves and Their Parts

Wave Speed

• The speed at which a wave passes through a medium
