    Tone Intense

o "Ralph's temper blazed out. "I say! You voted me chief...." Theblood was flowing in his cheeks and the bunged-up eyethrobbed" (Golding 176).

This shows how Ralph is becoming very intense and angry.

o Golding also describes the heated debates and fights between

    Jack and Ralph.

    Loss of Hope

o "...the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments andceased to exist" (Golding 181).

By using words such as "thousand...fragments" and "ceasedto exist" Golding is stressing how all hope of civilizationand order is gone.

o Piggy is also killed and "stuff came out and turned red"(Golding 181).

Red symbolizes evil and by having red come out of Piggy, itshows that evil has now consumed all hope of human

    Stylistic Techniques

    Foreshadowing

    "Piggy says

'Is it safe? Ain't there a cliff? I can hear the sea.'

'You keep right close to me.'

Ralph moved forward on to the neck. He kicked a stone and it bounded into the water. Then the seasucked down, revealing a red, weedy square forty feet beneath Ralph's left arm.

'Am I safe?' quavered Piggy. 'I feel awful-'" (Golding 174)

-This quote foreshadows piggy's inevitable death.

    Association

    "liberation into savegry "(Golding 172)

"freed by the paint, they had tied their hair back and were more comfortable than he was." (Golding175)

Stylistic Effect ForeshadowingForeshadowing in the book creates an ominous feeling for the reader, and

provide a feeling of disbelief in the reader. for example; the story

foreshadows Piggy's death constantly, enhancing the effect when it occurs

AssociationBy repeating combinations of words they create an association between the

terms and an association between the ideas.

He associates savagery with freedom providing this association within thereader

SymbolismThe author uses symbolism in the story to show things that are not explicitly

    said

like the conch symbolising civilization and its destruction showing how it isdestroyed

ImageryImagery is used to intensify specific tones of the story

like the death of Piggy enhancing the intense tone of the chapter.

    Author's Purpose

Golding main purpose of this chapter is to show the clash

between good and evil. The neverending battle of lightand dark.

Society vs AnarchyBoth of the group on the island represent one of theses aspects. Ralph's

leadership embodies the society side and the savage group represents therising anarchy spreading across the land.

Transformation into SavageryThe boys are pulled further away from the rules and regulations of society.

Without anything to hold them back, their conversion to savagery quickens.

Even if they fight it the mutation already begun.

Conflict of Good and Evil (Morals vs No Morals)There is more than just a physical struggle in this chapter. Ralph refrains

himself from harming Jack seriously because of the morals implemented onhim when he was still part of civilization. Jack has no morals to hold him

    back.

    Significant PassagesQuotes Analysis

"In the short chill of dawn the fourboys gathered round the blacksmudge where the fire had been,

while Ralph knelt and blew...Hesquatted back, swore, andrubbed water out of his eyes. "No

use."..."They've got our fire."Rage shrilled his voice. "Theystole it!" "Thats them," saidPiggy. " (Golding 169)

This passage is significant because havingand maintaining a fire was the only thingRalph cared about. Without any fire there isno smoke, and in Ralph's mind, no way ofbeing rescued. The fire was what Ralphclinged to. It was all he had to reassure himthat there was hope of getting home. Thisconnects to the world because in times of

desperation people typically have somethingthey cling to for hope just like Ralph with thefire.

Even though all of the boys have been on theisland for awhile and have let themselvesbecome dirty, Ralph wants to look nice,

cleaned up and presentable. Ralph feels thatif they present themselves in a nice way, Jackand the others will understand that they areserious about being rescued and maintainingorder. Many people now use the sametechniques. In order to convey theirseriousness to others they present

    themselves in a respectful way.

    "'...Supposing we go, looking like

we used to, washed and hairbrushed - after all we aren'tsavages really and being rescuedisn't a game-'" (Golding 170)

    Significant Passages

"The rock struck Piggy glancing blowfrom chin to knee: the conchexploded into a thousand whitefragments and ceased to exist.Piggy, saying nothing with no time

for even a grunt, traveled throughthe air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. The rock

bounded twice and was lost in theforest. Piggy fell forty feet andlanded on his back across thesquare red rock in the sea. His head

opened and stuff came out andturned red. Piggy's arms and legstwitched a bit, like a pig's after ithas been killed. Then the sea

breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pinkover the rock: and when it went,

sucking back again, the body ofPiggy was gone," (Golding 209).

When the boulder crushes Piggyand he drops the conch, the

breaking of the conch symbolizesthe end of Piggy and any hope left

of society and civilization. It 's ironic how Piggy's death is

    compared to a pig's.

The "red rock" that Piggy fallsonto can be perceived as a death

bed for Piggy. Red is aconnotation for death and evil.So when Piggy falls onto the rock,he falls to the evil of the island.

Piggy's body swallowed by the seasymbolizes a freedom from thechaos and barbarism of the boysand the island.

    Significant Passages

AnalysisQuote"I'm going to him with this

conch in my hands. I;mgoing to hold it out. Look,I'm goin' to say, you're

stronger than I am and youhaven't got asthma. You cansee, I'm goin' to say, andwith both eyes. But I don'task for my glasses back, not

    as a favor. I don't ask you tobe a sport, I'll say, notbecause you're strong, butbecause what's right's right.Give me my glasses, I'mgoing to say-you got

    to!"(Golding198).

This passage shows the highlight of

Piggy. Piggy finally takes a stand against

Jack for what he believes is right.

o I believe Golding used Piggy as the

climax of this chapter to explain to

the audience that even the peoplewho are uncared for, the ones who

are constantly ignored and left in the

dust, still have a voice and can still

keep positive and continue to try and

    change the world around them.

Piggy tells the civilized group that he will

demand for Jack to return his glasses

because it is the right and civilized thing todo.

o Golding shows that the only way to

live in a civilized society is to always

    do the right thing.
