Part 3

1. American troops helped the Allies defeat the Central Powers in World War I.

2. April 1917, President Wilson sent U.S. troops to Europe under the command of General John J. Pershing.

US Enters the War

3. May 1917, the War Department required merchant and troop ships to travel in convoys. Torpedo boats and other armed naval vessels helped protect the convoys. This helped to cut merchant marine losses in half.

4. In November 1917, the Bolsheviks, under Lenin overthrew Russia’s government. (The Bolshevik Revolution)

5. Russia’s exit from the war freed the Germans from fighting a 2 war front. (Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) Treaty between Russia and Germany.

6. Eddie Rickenbacker—famous U.S. pilot that downed 26 enemy fighters.

7. Baron Von Richtofen—the “Red Baron” the most famous German pilot of WWI.

8. Alvin York—He helped to capture 132 German soldiers.

9. Armistice—cease fire. This occurred November 11, 1918.

1. Liberty Bonds—these were sold to support the Allied cause.

2. War Industries Board—it oversaw war-related production.

3. War Trade Board—They licensed foreign trade and punished firms suspected of dealing with the enemy.

The War at Home

4. National War Labor Board—established April 1918. It was established to settle labor disputes that might hinder the war effort.

5. Samuel Gompers—This labor leader promised to limit labor strife (strikes) in war production industries.

6. War Labor Policies Board—set standard wages, hours, and working conditions in the war industries.

7. Lever Food and Fuel Control Act—gave the President the power to manage the production and distribution of foods and fuels vital to the war effort.
