CHAPTER 07 CONCLUSIONS Improvement of thick deposits of peaty clays is one of the major challenges faced by the Sri Lankan geotechnical engineers. Different methods of improvements such as; preloading, deep mixing and electro osmosis consolidation were tried under laboratory conditions for the selected amorphous peat. Deep mixing method was tried with different percentages of cement, lime and a combination of them. Improvements achieved in compressibility characteristics and shear strength properties were evaluated for each treatment type. Compressibility characteristics were evaluated through results of the consolidation tests. Tests were done with loading, unloading and reloading increments, to simulate preloading. Preloading is seen to cause significant improvements in both primary and secondary consolidation properties of the selected amorphous peat. Deep mixing with cement, lime and combination of them have also shown to cause some improvements. But a percentage of cement as high as 20% was required to improve both primary and secondary compression of the peat or to same levels as achieved by preloading. Electro osmosis consolidation is also seen to cause significant improvements in both primary and secondary consolidation properties. They are comparable with that achieved with preloading and deep mixing with 20% cement. The increase of shear strength of the soil due to electro osmotic consolidation was much greater than that achieved with preloading. However past researches done on Sri Lankan amorphous peaty clays (Munasinghe, 2001 and Priyankara at al, 2000) have observed significant improvement in compressibility characteristics of amorphous peaty clays with much lower contents of cement or lime. Therefore it can be concluded that the improvement achievable with deep mixing cannot be just related to the type of peat and it should be evaluated through laboratory testing, in each case. 86

CONCLUSIONS Improvement of thick deposits of peaty clays is one of the major challenges faced

Electro osmosis tests with the measurement of pore water pressure gave a further

insight into the mechanism. The tests were done with a closed anode and the

negative pore water pressure development at the anode was proportional to the

voltage difference applied. The settlement achieved through Electro osmosis was

also proportional to the applied voltage difference.

Electro osmosis consolidation tests conducted with pore water pressure

measurements to reveal much information about the electro osmosis consolidation

mechanism of the peat. Due to the problems in the pore pressure measuring

system the observations did not match the theoretical prediction. It is

recommended here that further tests should be conducted with transducer capable

of measuring negative pore water pressures.
