LUBRICATION
The engine is lubr ica ted by oilmixed with the fuel. The manufac-turer recommends the use of TwoCycle Motor Oil at the ratio of 20:1.
The enclosed chain case on 1968and 1969 models should be filled tolevel of check plug with AutomaticTransmission Fluid, Type "A", andshould be checked occasionally orwhen leakage is apparent.
All other parts are self lubricatedand require attention only when serv-ice is needed.
On 1970, 300 Models, remove fillplug at top of chain case and inserta stiff wire to touch the bottom. AddAutomatic Transmission Fluid, TypeA, as necessary to bring fluid levelto between 1 and 2 inches from chain-case bottom. On 1970 Executive andFirebird models, remove lower chain-
case cover and add fluid if necessary, until level is % - inch below coveropening.
On late models with "Chaparral"gearcase, check fluid level at plug (1—Fig. 1) and fill to level of plug open-ing at upper plug (7). Use automatic-transmission fluid, type A.
The steering column on 1970, 300Models has two lubrication fittings;Firebird and Executive have one lubefitting on steering column. All otherparts are self lubricated and requireattention only when service is needed.
ADJUSTMENT
STEERING SKIS. With handlebarin normal straight driving position, skis should be parallel with each otherand with vehicle frame. Steeringarms are splined to spindle and botharms should point straight to rear.
On early models all tie rod endshave right hand threads and adjust-ment is made by disconnecting oneend. Late models have R.H. and L.H.threads and adjustment can be madeby loosening locknut and turning rodcenter section.
DRIVE CHAIN. Drive chain shouldhave y4-% inch free play. Chaincan be inspected by removing chain

case inspection cover. Adjust the chainon 1969 models by loosening the studnuts retaining upper shaft housing(3—Fig. 3) to chain case (2) andmoving shaft housing in the slottedholes.
On 1970 and 1971 machines and1972 Skylark, upper shaft housing (16—Fig. 1) is secured in chain case byclamp ring (17) but housing is notslotted and no inspection cover isprovided. Loosen clamp screws andturn housing to reduce backlash to aminimum, then retighten nuts. Back-lash can be measured at pulley rim.
On other 1972 models, turn adjust-ing stud (1—Fig. 4) until a backlashof VA inch can be measured at pulleyrim.
NOTE: On late models with calipertype brakes , a l ignment must bechecked after drive chain is adjusted.
BRAKE. The band type brake isshown in Fig. 2 and 3. Band shouldjust clear drum when brake is re-leasesd but should fully engage be-fore hand lever contacts handlebar.Adjust by loosening cable clamp atactuating lever and pulling cable

brake, adjustment is made by remov-ing cotter pin and turning slotted nuton actuating arm stud. First makesure that caliper is properly aligned
on sheave rim and that push pinscenter the valleys in actuating arm.Tighten nut until resistance is felt, back off one full turn, then reinstallcotter pin. Actuating arm can be re-aligned if necessary, by repositioningthe cable housing anchor nuts.
Brake unit must be properly alignedwith braking flange on driven pulley, and alignment on some models will bechanged when drive chain is adjusted.Readjust by loosening the two boltsclamping brake housing to mountingbracket, fully applying the brake thenretightening clamp bolts while brakeis applied. Actuating arm may needto be repositioned after alignment.
TRACK. With rear of machineraised so that track is clear of groimd, track should have some slack but mustnot be excessively loose. Adjust byloosening the screws on each sidewhich secure rear track hanger brack-ets, then turning adjusting screws un-til excessive slack is removed. Both

sides must be adjusted alike. Refer toFig. 5.
NOTE: Whenever t rack has i:>eenadjusted, alignment MUST be checkedas outlined in TRACK SERVICE Sec-tion of this manual.
Snowgoer 600 is equipped with two18-inch tracks. Adjustment is as out-lined above except that each trackmust be adjusted individually.
