America's First Forest:

Based on Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck’s memoir Cradle of Forestry in America, America’s First Forest examines the role played by pioneering forestry educator Carl Schenck and his founding of America’s first school of forestry, the Biltmore Forest School. Through archival photos, historical reenactments and contemporary interviews, the documentary recounts how Schenck, a German forester, came to America in 1895 to manage the forests at George Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. With more than 100,000 acres of woodland to oversee and replant, Schenck began hiring young men to help with the work.

After three years of answering their questions while on the job, the forester decided to teach them in a more formal setting and established the first forestry school in the United States. Schenck lectured in the mornings and students worked the land in the afternoons, gaining practical forestry training in a one-year program. Despite eventually being dismissed by Vanderbilt and returning to Germany, Schenck’s leadership while at the Biltmore Forest (now preserved and celebrated as the Cradle of Forestry in America) was central to the conservation movement and the emergence of professional forestry.

Airs Tuesdays, July 5-12 and August 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Narrated by country music performer Kathy Mattea, and accompanied by Grammy nominee Peter Kater’s stirring musical score, Heart of the World: Colorado’s National Parks explores the stories and natural history of five breathtaking parks in Colorado. The three-part series combines stunning photography of the parks filmed through the seasons; scenic helicopter aerials; on-camera interviews; wildlife shots that include bears, bighorn sheep, moose and elk; and 3-D graphics to tell the stories of five of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet.

“Wonder” (July 5) unlocks the mysteries of the geological forces that created the amazing landscapes of Rocky Mountain National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado National Monument, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, and Mesa Verde National Park. “Water” (July 12) focuses on the distinct ways that water forms the landscapes, and the unique life that water helps to create and sustain in these parks. “Life” (August 2) examines how humans use the abundant natural resources of these parks and the effect these majestic places have on the human spirit.

Project SmokeSeason 2 begins Saturday, July 23 at 9:30/8:30 a.m. MT/PT

Steven Raichlen’s

Smoking ranks among the world’s most ancient and popular cooking methods. Host Steven Raichlen begins the second season of Project Smoke with “ABCs of Smoke” (July 23). From rotisserie-smoking chicken to smoke-roasting bourbon-bacon pork loin, from low and slow-smoked “brisket on the bone” (beef plate ribs) to smoked pears with smoked whipped cream for dessert, Raichlen teaches viewers how to smoke on a kettle grill, pellet smoker, electric smoker, and offset barrel smoker. Filmed at a stunning new location in Palm Springs, California, Project Smoke’s second season focuses on foods (and drinks) you never dreamed you could smoke, including sangria made with fire-charred fruit, smoked chocolate bread pudding, hay-smoked mozzarella, and spruce-smoked steak.

A Capitol Fourth, America’s favorite Independence Day celebration, honors our country’s 240th birthday with a 90-minute all-star salute. The extravaganza features coverage from 20 cameras positioned around Washington, D.C., to put viewers front and center for the musical festivities and the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. This year the concert features special segments in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the USO and the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. A Capitol Fourth is broadcast from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands. It’s also enjoyed by millions of home viewers and by our troops watching around the world on the American Forces Network. A Capitol Fourth is followed at 9:30 p.m. by perennial favorite 3,2,1 Fireworks, which takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Washington, D.C., Independence Day celebration. Shot in high definition, the special captures every step of the renowned fireworks production. It opens in China as the crew observes the making of fireworks and dazzling new pyrotechnic effects. Once the fireworks are shipped to America, an army of technicians undertake the delicate and dangerous tasks of setting up thousands of explosives-filled mortar tubes in preparation for the spectacular aerial display.

In A Few Great Bakeries (July 1), Sebak visits Silver Bow Bakery in Juneau, Alaska — where they specialize in New York bagels — and Mama Ines Mexican Bakery in Lafayette, Indiana. He discovers that local bakeries are not only neighborhood landmarks, they’re cultural hubs as well. A Few Good Pie Places airs July 8. From Blue Hawaii pie (blueberries, crushed pineapple and toasted coconut) to a rustic pie shed in Vermont that works on the honor system, Sebak meets master pie makers who are sometimes as crusty and flaky as their creations.

Airs Fridays, July 1-8 at 9:00 p.m.

Quirky broadcaster Rick Sebak finds unexpected charms in out-of-the-way places. In these two specials, Sebak sets his sights on some of America’s best little shops and restaurants that serve locally famous fare.

The third U.S. season of the popular British bake-off series airs Fridays: July 1, 8 and 29 at 8:00 p.m. and July 15 and 22 at 8:30 p.m. Two episodes air back-to-back on July 15, 22 and 29. Each season, passionate amateur bakers face elimination as they compete to prove their mastery of increasingly difficult baking challenges, from cakes and bread to puddings and pâtisserie. Each episode presents the remaining contestants with three challenges that take place over two exhausting days of competition. One contestant is crowned Britain’s best amateur baker. Season 3 is filmed on the grounds of Welford Park, a country house and estate in Berkshire, England.

Season 3 begins Friday, July 1 at 8:00 p.m.

Inspector Lewis SEASON 7 ON MASTERPIECE

Encores Sundays beginning July 17 at 9:00 p.m.

Inspector Lewis: The Final Season will premiere in August. Catch up with adventures you may have missed as Inspector Lewis, Season 7 encores in July. Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox return as Inspector Lewis and CS Hathaway for the seventh season of the popular series. Hathaway has been promoted to inspector after an extended break from the force, accompanied by a new partner, DS Lizzie Maddox. Lewis is enjoying retired life until he’s asked to team up with his old colleague again. With their partnership renewed under altered circumstances, the detectives continue to solve crime in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford, England. Inspector Lewis, Season 7 airs Sundays, July 17-31 at 9:00 p.m.

Hinterland is a new noir crime drama set in the centuries-old town of Aberystwyth, Wales. The area is a natural crucible of colliding worlds — a place where history, myth and tradition come face-to-face with modern life — but its panoramic vistas and quaint facade hide a multitude of sins. Into this realm steps the enigmatic DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington, Poldark), a brilliant but troubled investigator on the run from his past. Together with his equally intelligent and complex partner DI Mared Rhys (Mali Harries, Foyle’s War), Mathias tackles mystifying murder cases that take viewers from the windswept sand dunes of the Welsh coastline to the mountain hinterland beyond. In the premiere episode, “Devil’s Bridge” (July 8), DCI Mathias barely has time to unpack after relocating from London to Aberystwyth before he’s called to the scene of a brutal attack at an isolated chalet in the sand dunes. The victim is believed to be a 64-year-old woman, Helen Jenkins, but she is nowhere to be found. The investigation leads him to the remote village of Devil’s Bridge where for many years Jenkins ran a children’s home. The home has long since closed and is now a hotel — eerie, mysterious, and a treasure trove of buried secrets. On the nearby bridge railings, Mathias finds traces of blood, which lead to his discovery of the missing body in the ravine below. Mathias knows that only by unlocking the secrets of what happened at the children’s home years ago will he crack the case and reveal the murderer — secrets which lead to a chase into the hinterland and a climax at an ancient mountain chapel. Additional episodes of Hinterland air July 15 and 22 at 10:30 p.m., and July 29 at 10:00 p.m.

New Series Premieres Friday, July 8 at 10:00 p.m.

As the United States heads for what portends to be a raucous convention season, Dialogue host Marcia Franklin talks with Eric Liu, the founder of Citizen University in Seattle, about whether it’s even possible in a seemingly fractured society to have a civil discussion about politics. Liu, also the executive director of the Citizenship and American Identity Program at the Aspen Institute, is trying to reclaim civic education from the doldrums and encourage Americans to act on their rights. His TED Talk on the subject has more than 1.5 million views. Franklin and Liu discuss the “tectonic” demographic shift in the country and what it potentially means for governing, how even Americans from diverse backgrounds are bound together by a common creed, and what he means by a “third Reconstruction Period” in the United States. There has never been a year like 1968. Assassinations, racial unrest, nationwide riots, and an endless war in Vietnam put the nation on edge and produced a historic three-way presidential election where all the candidates were deeply flawed. Backed into a corner by rising casualties in Vietnam and with no easy exit strategy, President Johnson stunned the nation in March 1968 when he announced he would not seek a second full term in the White House. Even darker hours came when Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were cut down by assassins’ bullets. Race riots and anti-war protests erupted in hundreds of cities across the country and the world. Hostilities and bitterness spilled over onto the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago where massive demonstrations and an unforgiving police response nearly tore the party apart. American voters faced an unsatisfying set of choices in the November election for the White House — Republican Richard Nixon, Democrat Hubert Humphrey, and Independent George Wallace. Ball of Confusion is the story of 1968 and the presidential election told through interviews with Larry J. Sabato, Ted Koppel, Skip Humphrey, Walter Mondale, George Wallace Jr. and Peggy Wallace, among others.

to run out of wall and shelf space. And we have two floors in the building. We need more room for IdahoPTV’s awards, 861 of them since we started to keep computer records back in 1997. Before that, the awards went away with the people who won them or they’re stacked in boxes in a room beside the elevator in the basement. The awards are international, national, regional and in-state recognition. They come to the network’s regularly-scheduled programs, to specials and to station or fundraising promotions. They’re called Emmy, CINE, Telly, New York Festival, Professional Journalists, Worldfest and the top award in all electronic communications – the Peabody. IdahoPTV has one of the Peabodies, awarded for a program on teens and mental illness. Awards are useful to give the network an idea of how well it’s doing in comparison to other outlets in the same field. They are awarded by professionals who understand the production difficulties and are giving other professionals essential feedback. However, we don’t let the awards go to our heads. Every one of the awards has to be judged based on the competition. We always have to ask ourselves: Was there competition and how well done was the competition? In nearly all cases, the competition for our awards was stiff, and we can be justly proud of the awards we display. – Royce Williams

Frederick Wiseman’s documentary on Idaho Legislature airs nationally.

It was a first for IdahoPTV – a docudrama covering what became the trial of the century. A seven-man jury was to decide whether or not William D. (Big Bill) Haywood, head of the Western Federation of Miners, was guilty of conspiracy in the dynamite assassination of Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg. Did Haywood hire Harry Orchard to set the trigger at Steunenberg’s gate? The trial was a symbol of the clash between workers and capitalists in America.

Producer Bruce Reichert had Idaho Supreme Court Justice Byron Johnson’s historic transcripts of the trial, and that was the script that couldn’t be changed. The nearly 3-month trial went viral with James Hawley and William Borah for the prosecution and Edmund Richardson and Clarence Darrow for the defense. Closing arguments took more than 34 hours. To everyone’s surprise, Haywood was found not guilty. Volunteers were an integral part of the production, and there were dozens of them dressed in period costumes and giving cameramen great reaction shots, especially after the surprise verdict was announced. The jury was a bit more difficult, but those with the best early 1907 beards finally were seated. The special aired in November of 2007 and was later re-edited for use in Idaho classrooms.

You’re probably in your gum boots or housecoat, garb you wouldn’t dare show up wearing at the Statehouse. But you want to hear what your senator or representative says about that bill that’s important to you.

IdahoPTV solves the problem with almost no embarrassment to you. The network provides gavel to gavel coverage of both the House and Senate chambers. In addition, we cover the governor’s state of the state and budget speeches. The work of the Joint Finance - Appropriations Committee also is featured on the daily programs while the Legislature is in town. The programs are unedited, meaning they are provided exactly as they happen. There are no summaries or editorial comment from any reporters or bloggers on anything said. It is likely some

legislators would like a chance to re-say something they said on-camera, but it can’t be done. The as-it-happens coverage makes lawmakers human, folks like the rest of us, and that’s how democracy is supposed to work. Viewers can agree or disagree with what’s been said, and they can go directly to the phone or e-mail and pat their lawmaker on the back or tell him or her to think again.

“Great White Light of Conscience”

2010

Pledges to IdahoPTV break the $1 million ceiling. There is some evidence that John Tourtellotte, the original architect

of Idaho’s Capitol Building, may have wanted to break out of the traditional style for capitols. He called copying the federal template a coffee can with two shoeboxes attached and a coconut on top. However, he had a contract that would give him $10,000 for the Idaho building, so he stuck to what he was told to design – a D.C. kind of capitol. The building, finished in 1913, gave the smaller legislature plenty of room, but all that had changed by the turn of the new century. A restoration and expansion of the Capitol was going to cost a lot more than $10,000, but it got done, thanks to an increase in the cigarette tax.

Tourtellotte managed to work some pretty unique features into his design. The major one was the use of light. The Capitol was flooded with it, no dark corners. The marble was a light color, too. Any paint used was white, which invited more light. Tourtellotte said the light was a symbol for citizens’ clear view of the work going on there. New architects kept the plan, with skylights letting a lot of light into the new underground wings.

‘Capitol of Light’ airs on IdahoPTV.

Airs Sunday, July 10 at 9:00 p.m.

Presidential Biographies Bring Context to Election

As viewers prepare for the presidential election, Idaho Public Television presents a collection of outstanding

presidential biographies from American Experience in August. We begin with Susan Bellow’s powerful “JFK,” a four-hour portrait of President Kennedy, on August 8 and 9. This biography provides a fresh look at an enigmatic man who remains one of the nation’s most beloved and mourned leaders. On August 10 we present the four-hour “LBJ” from filmmaker David Gruben. Lyndon Baines Johnson was one of the most astute, effective, and perplexing politicians in modern American history. An “accidental” president but a master legislator, he was

determined to “out-Kennedy the Kennedys” by pushing through historic social legislation on a scale that rivaled FDR’s New Deal. “Nixon” airs August 11. Decades after his death, Richard Nixon still inspires divided passions in America. Nixon rose from modest Quaker beginnings in California to the most powerful office in the world. A staunch anti-communist, he improved U.S.-Soviet relations, and surprised the world by opening relations with Communist China. Some credit him with ending the war in Vietnam. But Nixon’s career was ultimately undone by his own actions. On August 15 we look at the life of President Jimmy Carter. In 1980, Carter was overwhelmingly voted out of office in a humiliating defeat, but over the subsequent two decades he became one of the most admired statesmen and humanitarians in America and the world. “Jimmy Carter,” Adriana Bosch’s superb two-hour film, traces his rapid ascent in politics, dramatic fall from grace and unexpected resurrection. Finally, on August 16 and 17 we present “Reagan,” Austin Hoyt’s four-hour look at America’s 40th president. In 1988, after

two terms in office, Ronald Reagan left the White House one of the most popular presidents of the 20th century — and one of the most controversial. A failed actor, Reagan became a passionate ideologue who preached a simple gospel of lower taxes, less government, and anti-communism, and who always preferred to see America as a “shining city on a hill.” And those are my picks for next month.

STATION NOTESCreating a Lasting LegacyBy Shane Chariton, Major Giving Director

This month we are privileged to share the annual list of Memorial and Honorary gifts. A donation made to Idaho Public Television in memory or honor of someone special is a meaningful way to carry on the strong tradition of public media in Idaho. The family of those being honored receives notification of all memorial gifts, donors receive a receipt for their contributions, and donations of any amount are gladly accepted. If leaving a lasting legacy is important to you, and whatever your stage in life, it is wise to plan ahead for how you want your financial affairs to be handled. Your estate plan can also support charitable causes that matter most to you, including IdahoPTV. Designating the Friends of Idaho Public Television Endowment in your will is an investment in the minds and hearts

of Idahoans, ensuring that the rich local public broadcasting legacy that has been nurtured during the past 50 years will grow and benefit future generations. This past year IdahoPTV received memorial gifts in honor of former staff members, longtime volunteers and donors — including those who designated IdahoPTV in their estate plans. Call Shane Chariton, Major Giving Director, or Jenifer Johnson, Director of Development at (208) 373-7220 or (800) 543-6868 for more information about Memorial and Honorary gifts, and information about including the Friends of Idaho Public Television Endowment in your estate plans. We will gladly mail a FREE booklet, A Personal and Charitable Financial Record, to you upon request.

I D A H O

Your newly redesigned Channels magazine is almost ready. Watch for it in September. Our Communications staff has been working hard on a new layout that allows room for more articles and a better way for you to see what’s on across all four of our channels. Check out some of the new sections below. This change is important to us, too. This new design will save us literally weeks of time each month and will give us the ability to communicate with more of you in the way that suits you best, whether it’s in print, online, via social media or on the web. We’re making more space for articles about new and returning programs on our , , and channels. It will also be easier to find out what’s on during prime time. Past survey results indicate that: 44% of you use Channels to look up days and/or times a program will air, 72% of you “sometimes, often or very often” read the articles

(41% said often or very often), 81% of you have never seen the online version of Channels. The 81% number is not much of a head-stretcher for us since we readily admit the online version of Channels was nothing to write home about. So we put even more effort into finding a good solution. The new online version has the same feel as our print version, but offers it virtually. It allows you to page through the magazine, but the exciting part is that you will be able to click on any program in the grid to learn more at our website. With your tablet or pad you’ll also be able to easily pinch to zoom in and move around. It’s a truly simple experience. But don’t worry — if you don’t have an internet connection and still want the paper version, it will continue to come to your doorstep for years to come. As always, we appreciate your comments and suggestions. Feel free to write or call me. You can also email the Channels team at [email protected].
