Fame in thecapital of Normandy

Rollo was the founder and first ruler of the Viking principality known as Nor-mandy today. His dynasty ruled both England and large parts of modern Franceand made Rouen one of the principal and most prosperous cities of medievalEurope.

William the Conqueror the descendant of  Viking  raiders was thefirst Norman King of England. Normandy was secure and he launched the Nor-man conquest of England in 1066. He died at St-Gervase church in Rouen.

Richard the Lionheart had a reputation as a great military leader, war-rior and was King of England and he ruled as Duke of Normandy. Richard's heartwas buried at the Rouen Cathedral, where you can still visit his recumbent sta-tue.

Joan of Arc patron saint of France was to become one of the greatest figuresduring the 100 years’ war between England and France and to subsequently bejudged and burned at the stake in Rouen for heresy.

Claude Monet settled down to paint a series of paintings between 1892and 1894 depicting the facade of Rouen’s Cathedral. He painted them from dif-ferent angles, different times of the day and in different seasons. His series ofover 30 paintings gave Rouen a truly international appeal.
