MINOOKA AREA

Village ofChannahonLocated at the confluence of theDuPage, Des Plaines and Kankakeerivers, together forming the Illinois River,Channahon initially attracted its first non-native settlers back in the 1830s. Thevillage name, derived from aPottawatomi word meaning “meeting ofthe waters,” accurately reflects itslocation. The Village of Channahon wasincorporated in 1961 and now boasts aquickly growing population of more than12,000.

Village ofMinookaMinooka’s rich history has its ties withthe coming of the railroad. With hispurchase of 500 acres along thesuggested route of the Rock IslandRailroad, rail surveyor Randall Gardnersuccessfully founded the village in 1852.The community’s moniker was derivedfrom the Pottawatomi word for “goodland,” which appropriately describes thearea. The Village of Minooka wasincorporated on March 27, 1869 andcurrently encompasses an expandingpopulation of around 8,000.

HISTORYHistory of ChannahonAlthough the Village of Channahon will becelebrating the 50th anniversary of itsincorporation next year, the history ofChannahon goes back considerably further.Located where the DuPage, Des Plaines andKankakee rivers meet to form the IllinoisRiver, the Pottawatomi Indians called the area“Channahon,” meaning “where the watersmeet.”

History of MinookaUntil 1852, the site of the Village of Minookawas a grass covered prairie hill overlookingthe Illinois River valley. It was supposedly afavorite hunting area for the Pottawatomitribes who lived in the are until the 1830s. Earlywhite settlers came to the area to stay in 1833.

The Village of Dresden, located to the south ofMinooka, was begun by one of the firstsettlers, Salmon Rutherford, and thrived alongthe I&M Canal only to fail with the coming ofthe railroad to the north. The Chicago, RockIsland and Pacific Railroad put down tracksfrom Chicago to Ottawa in 1852. RansomGardner, a surveyor for the railroad, purchased 500 acres in the northeast cornerof Grundy County and plotted the town.George Comerford, another early settler, wasmade the town’s first railroad agent.

Minooka was originally called Summitbecause the town was the highest point on theRock Island Line. In the late 1920s, therailroad cut a “pass” through the village in anattempt to level the grade that plaguesengineers on the lone freight andpassenger trains. As a result, the tracks lie 13 to 15 feetbelow the level ofMondamin St. Until thispoint, the tracks werelevel with the street withbusinesses on both sidesof the street. The villagewas given its name by Dolly

Smith who was the wife of Ransom Gardner’sagent in town, Leander Smith. She spoke thePottawatomi language and called the townMinooka. It has been said that the meaning ofthe word is high point, place of contentment, good Earth or place of maples.

She also named many of the streets.Mondamin means corn in the Pottawatomilanguage. An old deed records the name asAnoka. Minooka was granted its charter andincorporated in 1869. Leander Smith wasnamed Village President. A.K. Knapp, WilliamJordan, Thomas Harris and S.B. Alsdurf wereelected trustees. St. Mary’s Church wasorganized in 1862. There was a Catholicchurch in the Village of Dresden, St.Anthony’s, but members followed thebusinesses and public interests to Minooka. The current St. Mary’s Church was built in1905 after a fire destroyed the church thatonce stood to the east of St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Minooka Methodist Episcopal Church wasorganized in 1856. The original churchbuilding was destroyed by a tornado in 1917.The current building was built soon after and

has undergone much renovation andgrowth over the years. Minooka

has retained two hotels, ahorse track, a tobogganslide, a movie theater, many factories, businesses, socialorganizations and many,

many wonderful citizens.

TO ENCOURAGE YOUTO BUY Local....

The Village of Channahon and Village of Minooka, along with the Greater Channa-hon Minooka Area Chamber of Commerce, would like to remind you to BUY LOCALat any of our service or retail businesses!

A Public Service Announcement from the Greater Channahon MinookaChamber of Commerce along with the villages of Channahon and Minooka

There are many advantages to buying goods and services from our village’s businesses. Here arejust a few examples:

1. Keep our Community Unique - Our businesses cater to the cultural base of the community theyserve. Where we live, shop and play is the foundation of our community. Businesses are vital to thediverse character of our communities.

2. Get Better Services - Our businesses hire people with knowledge of the products they areselling and areas they are servicing. They provide more quality customer service by giving specialattention to each patron they serve.

3. Reduce Environmental Impact - Local businesses are found in thriving communities. They, along with our residents, are more likely to purchase from other local enterprises. The result is lesstravel, which reduces air pollution.

4. Keep Your Tax Dollars in Your Community - Our businesses anchor the community’sinfrastructure and support the village, schools and county tax base. When we buy products orservices from area businesses, dollars are recycled back into the community.

5. Invest in the Community and Support Yourself - People involved in our business live in thecommunity activites. They give back to the community in which they service, encouraging ourgrowth.

6. Support Community Activities - All our businesses support non-profits and other communityactivites. They give back to the community in which they service, encouraging our growth.

Should you have any questions, comments or concerns about “Buying Local”, please contact MariEdmondson, Executive Director, Greater Channahon Minooka Chamber of Commerce, at(815) 521-9999 or [email protected]
