Within these pages you will find our report on Methodist Hospitals’ efforts to bring the highest quality health care to Northwest Indiana residents in 2014.

This is our accounting to you, our valued community members, of the steps we have taken in the past year to improve your health and wellbeing. We do this in several ways:

• We place the safety of our patients as our first priority and continuously strive to improve the quality of the care we provide.

• We invest in the latest technology to support the skills of our physicians and clinical staff.

• We provide a caring environment here at Methodist Hospitals where the circle of life plays out each and every day – birth, life, joy, pain and healing.

• We strive to maintain an employee culture in which every staff member is passionate in their commitment our mission to be the best place for patients to receive care.

• And we make the commitment to take our expertise and resources beyond our hospital walls and out into all sections of our community.

We hope that you will share our pride in our accomplishments of 2014 and that you will continue to choose Methodist Hospitals as we strive to meet the future challenges of our changing health care environment.

We invite all of the stakeholders in the Methodist family to join us in leading change, driving results and building alliances to achieve a new and stronger future for Methodist Hospitals. Together we can achieve the “Triple Aim of Healthcare,” which is to improve cost, improve the patient experience, and improve the quality and outcomes of care for the patients and families we are so privileged to serve.

ChiCago Tribune’s Top 100 WorkplaCes for 2014

Methodist Hospitals was named one of the Chicago Tribune’s 2014 Top 100 Workplaces. It is an honor to be included among this group of first class Chicago area organizations – we were the only Northwest Indiana organization to be included in these rankings. The Chicago Tribune Top 100 Workplaces are determined solely by employee feedback – employees of organizations across the Chicagoland area were asked to rate their employers on several dimensions. We are very proud that our employees gave feedback that placed us in the top 100 workplaces in the Chicago area.

Methodist Hospitals Leads The Way with Groundbreaking Research on Safety Improvements in Intravenous Therapy.

Devices called disinfection caps are often used with central line IVs to reduce the incidence of blood stream infections. Methodist nurses proposed their use as one of the interventions to help reduce these infections. Infection control and nursing collaborated to conduct research that demonstrated that the use of these devices throughout the hospital on peripheral, as well as central IV lines, resulted in 45% fewer overall infections. This research was published in the Journal of the Association for Vascular Access. This publication and other initiatives have led major national health providers to begin implementing similar practices in their systems.

Value based purChasing (Vbp):

The Federal Government evaluates the performance of hospitals on key quality measures, including safety, patient experience and outcomes of care, creating a “Total Performance Score” for each hospital. Penalties and bonuses for individual hospitals are assessed based on this score.

Methodist Hospitals’ VBP total performance score in 2014 exceeded both state and national averages, earning a bonus of $200,000. Methodist was among only 25% of hospitals nationally to earn a VBP bonus payment.

Methodist Hospitals finished 2014 with six consecutive years of profitability, made possible by solid volume performance, including:

• 18,095 patient visits accounting for 105,413 patient days.

• 66,456 Emergency Department visits

• 1,506 babies delivered

• Outpatient services were up 3% compared to 2013

• Emergency department visits increased 4% versus prior year

Increasing volumes and excellent expense control allowed us to invest $14.8 million in new technology, equipment and facilities to benefit our patients and their families.

We ended 2014 with a strong 198 days of cash on hand and were able to provide more than $90 million in community benefits during the year. Methodist Hospitals makes a significant contribution to the health of its communities via underwriting care for the uninsured and underinsured as well as free services to community members via health fairs, health screenings and other free programs.

finanCial adVoCaCy on behalf of Vulnerable populaTions

Methodist commits significant financial resources to assist our patients with addressing their overall long-term healthcare needs, through application assistance for various local, state and federal healthcare programs, such as township assistance, Medicaid, HIP, CHIP, and other grants such as income assistance and food stamps. Believing that everyone has the right to quality care and coverage, we create and support programs that lower financial barriers, so that the uninsured and underinsured can gain access to the care we provide. We accomplish this through the provision of charity care and free or subsidized coverage. In 2014 Methodist made a significant effort to help community members take advantage of the Health Care Marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act and the state HIP 2.0 program to expand Medicaid. Methodist employees trained as navigators conducted a series of informational seminars which helped hundreds of local residents to gain health coverage.

A decade-long aspiration and goal for Methodist Hospitals was realized in 2014 when official approval came from the Indiana State EMS Commission for Methodist Hospitals’ Northlake Campus to be considered an “in the process” Level III trauma center. With this approval, the Northlake Campus Emergency Department now becomes the state’s 16th trauma center and the first in Northwest Indiana.

This designation means that EMS providers may now transport the most seriously injured patients within a 45-minute radius to Methodist Hospitals’ Northlake Campus. In addition, trauma center status, with its emphasis on the coordination of care from the patient’s first contact with EMS through all phases of care, has a ripple effect that raises the level of care across the whole organization. That is good news both for Methodist Hospitals patients and for the hospitals’ commitment to providing the very best care possible.

22 - Annual Report 2014

m E t h o d i s t h o s p i ta l s f o u n d a t i o n c o n t i n u E s i t s

The 2014 Mardi Gras Ball recognized the 2013 fundraising efforts of the Foundation’s Krewes – groups whose fund raising efforts benefit individual hospital services. The top fundraisers – Randalyn McColly-Fleener and Mario Minotti – were named King and Queen.

Foundation Krewes hosted a variety of fundraising events throughout the year such as Methodist Night at the Railcats, Wine, Women and Shoes, a Murder Mystery Masquerade and a Princess Brunch.

Thanks to the participation of 120 golfers and the support of several sponsors, the fourth annual Foundation Masters Golf Outing in June realized $18,000 to support its mission.

The Foundation float, the Methodist Belle, again took a prize at the City of Gary Fourth of July Parade.

In December, Foundation donor Mark McDaniels joined with Foundation leaders and Methodist Hospitals Oncology Institute staff to create a Holiday celebration honoring cancer survivors and their families.
