The “Ideal Family”

• During the 1950’s, the “ideal family” consist of a mother, a father, and their children, as the backbone of American society.

• To function smoothly women had to accept their role as homemakers

Betty Frieden

• During the 1960’s women started to retaliate • In 1963 Frieden wrote a book called The

Feminine Mystique. • She helped establish the National

Organization for Women.• She also wrote a book called The Second

Stage, in 1981.• She wanted women to be just as equal as

men.

• Gloria Steinem attempted  change awareness of women's little rights, through mass media.She became the most famous feminist leader of the 1970's

Equal Rights Amendment

• Proposed amendment to the constitution to guarantee gender equality.

Schlafly was a conservative political activist that denounced women liberation as  "a total assault on the family, on marriage, and on children“

• Women’s roles are in the household not outside the home.

Feminism

• Theory that women and men should have political, social, and economic equality.

Women’s goals

The goal of the women’s role changing movement was that they wanted to have equal rights and be as equal as a man.
