Travel with an open mind – you’re about tospend 10 days with a group of people youprobably don’t know and taking on a completelynew challenge. Embrace it, support each other andyou’ll come back to the UK with firm friends for lifehaving accomplished a huge achievement!
Packing a few home comforts will make all thedifference, be it biscuits, sweets (for that sugarboost on the Wall!) or some squash to liven upyour water.
Separate your clothes and toiletries intodifferent dry bags, not only will this help makepacking much easier but it will also make findingthings quicker during your trek! You should onlypack what you need in your day bag to keep it aslight as possible!

Exploring ChinaOur Great Wall of China Discovery takes us alongthe Huangyaguan section of the Wall with routesthrough Jinshanling and Mutianyu before finishingin the bustling city of Beijing. For a nominal adminfee you can extend your flights and choose tocontinue your exploring, be it visiting theTerracotta Army in Xi'an, the Li River in Guilin orthe Giant Pandas in Chengdu – to name just a fewthings China has to offer!

Day 1 Depart Manchester for Beijing.Meet our crew and your fellow trekkers atManchester airport for the journey to China.
Day 2 Arrive BeijingWe arrive in Beijing in the early morning and transferto Huangyaguan where we catch our first glimpse ofthe Great Wall on our way to the start of the trek.After lunch we set off to tackle the Huangyaguansection of the Great Wall which, originally built in 557AD, is known to be particularly stunning because ofits water towers that have all been restored to theirformer majestic glory.Approx. 3-4 hours trekking
Day 3 Huangyaguan – Qiankaijian VillageOur hike today leads us straight out of the hotel andonto a restored section of the Wall and by mid-morning we will reach the start of “Heavens Ladder”,a steep, narrow climb of over 300 steps. This is atough section but at the top we are rewarded withstunning views over the Yanshan Mountains and theregion below. After congratulating each other wehead up again following a path through shrubbery tojoin the top of the ridge where our path windsaround sections of the old wall. In the afternoon wefollow the path down the valley into the mountainvillage where we will stay tonight in a local-runguesthouse; an unforgettable experience in a remotearea of China where few tourists have stayed.Approx. 5-7 hours trekking
Day 4 Qiankaijian Village – JinshanlingAfter breakfast we head out of the village up a steeptrail alongside farmer’s fields up to the wall whereHeibei province, Tianjin City and Beijing meettogether, known as the “Three Borders Tablet”. Wethen make our way West with the un-restored wall toour side as we descend back down to the villagewhere we stop for lunch. After lunch we trek furtherthrough the village to meet our coach for thetransfer to Jinshanling.Approx. 4-5 hours trekking
Day 5 Guebikou to JinshanlingThis morning we transfer to the start of theGubeikou section of the Great Wall where, if theweather is good, we can see Miyun reservoir and theWangjing Tower rising in the distance. This sectiontowards Jinshanling is one of the best preservedareas of the Great Wall
and today we will trek through 67 restored watchtowers each offering fantastic photo opportunities.Approx. 5-7 hours trekking
Day 6 Jinshanling to MutianyuAfter breakfast we trek east heading towards Simataialong a much restored section of the wall. Our trektoday can been seen for miles as the Wall runs upand down the spine of the mountain. We will takeshelter in one of the many watchtowers on the way –you can bet that Genghis Khan never had it so goodwhen he broke through the Great Wall with hisMongol hordes! We end the day with a transfer toour accommodation in Mutianyu.Approx. 3-5 hours trekking
Day 7 Mutianyu to BeijingToday is our final morning on the Great Wall! Afterleaving the hotel and passing a small village we startclimbing a steep, wooded track to the top of the Wallfor our final breathtaking views over the far offmountains. The section we join is known to be one ofmost beautiful parts of the wild Wall in Beijing, lovedby many photographers. After our final hike wecome back down to the road to meet our bus anddrive back to the hustle and bustle of Beijing. After achance to freshen up, we’ll regroup and head out toour celebration meal held in downtown Beijing, atime to reflect on our achievement.Approx. 3-4 hours trekking
Day 8 BeijingToday we take time to explore the capital, jampacked with its 17 million residences, and steeped inhistory and culture. We’ll visit Tiananmen Square andthe nearby Forbidden City before grabbing somelunch. This afternoon you can choose to explore theexpansive Pearl Market and test your bargainingskills or opt for a foot massage or rickshaw tour ofthe Hutongs, the oldest area of Beijing. This eveningthere will be the chance to watch a traditional Kung-Fu performance.
Day 9 Beijing to ManchesterToday we transfer to the airport for our flight back tothe UK.
Due to the nature of the challenge, this complexitinerary is subject to change.

You can choose to raise the full amount of sponsorship to ensureyour event costs and minimum amount to St Benedict’s Hospice areall covered! This way, you don’t have to pay a thing towards yourchallenge and the Hospice receives a huge amount of much-neededfunds! Both Skyline and the team at St Benedict’s will be on handwith fundraising tips and advice to get you started.
You can pay your own event costs – this way every penny you raisewill go to St Benedict’s Hospice! We recognise that a huge part ofthe challenge can be the fundraising element so with this optionyou are able to pay for your own place and then raise the remainingamount for the charity.

ClimateIt is usually fair and clear at this time of year with temperatures of around 21–27°C, however you should be prepared for rain. The temperature will drop overnight.

Fundraising is certainly achievable if you put your mind to it andneedn’t be daunting - the important thing is to let everyone knowabout the great cause you are fundraising for and to enjoyyourself! With a bit of creativity, energy and determination youwill easily be able to reach your fundraising target. Here are someideas to start you off and we’re more than happy to help with anyquestions you may have!
Begin by setting up an online donation page and ask everyone youknow to donate – the more people you ask, the more you will raise!
Host a dinner night/coffee morning and charge guests for a delicioushome cooked meal or tea and cake.
Put on the ultimate fundraising spectacular and host a charity ball!
Host your own pub quiz or bingo night.
Dig out your unwanted treasures and organise a car boot or jumblesale.
Organise a games night and invite friends over, charging for anevening of fun and games!
Leave collection boxes in your local pub or shop or organise a bagpack at your local supermarket.
Your charity will be on hand to provide you with a fundraising pack andplenty of useful hints and tips to help you hit your target!
PREPARATION
All of our challenges are graded from Moderate (1) to Extreme (5)and the Great Wall of China Discovery is graded as Difficult (3).This trek is perfect for the intrepid explorer! You’ll be on toughterrains (with plenty of stairs!) so ample training will be requiredand essential to prepare you for the challenge. You can find a fulltraining guide on your Participant’s Page upon booking onto thetrek.
We will provide you with a full kit list tailored to your trek once youhave signed up so that you will be fully prepared before you go! It’simportant to purchase good quality kit and equipment that suitsyou - never underestimate the importance of good walking boots!It’s vital to trek with comfortable shoes that you have worn induring your training months.

St Benedict’s Hospice has provided specialist palliative care to the people of Sunderland and surrounding districts since 1984. Care is provided by the NHS as part of South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust and is also supported by St. Benedict’s Hospice charity.
