Introduction

The city of New Delhi, with a population of 14 million, will be the

host of Commonwealth Games 2010. This will be the first time

India will host the Commonwealth Games and the second timein Asia.

Delhi won the right to host the 2010 Games by defeating the

Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 at the CGF

General Assembly held in Montego Bay in November 2003.

The Commonwealth Games are to be held in followingdisciplines:

 Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics,

Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Net Ball, Shooting, Squash, Rugby 7´s

Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Changing face of Delhi

A new state-of-the-art Games Village is being built by the Delhi

Development Authority (DDA) with a focus on maximising

athlete comfort. The village will be developed along the eastbank of the River Yamuna. The site is off the National Highway

24 adjacent to the Akshardham temple at the Noida

intersection. Exceeding CGF requirements, the Village will

translate traditional Indian hospitality into standards of comfort

& excellence never seen before by participating teams. To becreated at a cost of USD 230.7 million (including Residential

Zone), the Games Village will be spread over an area of 63.5

hectare (158.4 acre).

World Class Games Village

The new state-of-the-art GamesVillage is being planned aroundmaximising athlete comfort. Theservices and facilities will have aunique "athlete-comfort" orientationand approach.

The Village will translate traditionalIndian hospitality into standards of comfort & excellence never seenbefore by participating teams.

Within its immediate vicinity areheritage monuments and historicallandmarks. Combined with the densegreen natural cover on the sides, it willbe a relaxing and soothingenvironment for the athletes andofficials. Athletes and Officials from all

sports will stay at this one village.

Roads & Transport

y Addition of new arterial andapproach roads to improve intra-

city transport and decongestionof all National Highways atDelhi¶s entry points from itsneighbouring states.

Road Improvement Plan for 52identified roads

y Construction of nine newsubways and improvementprojects for existing ones(flooring, illuminations, signage,toilets, escalators etc).

Airports

y Modernisation of the internationalairport with increased capacity to

host flights. The new terminal will give the

airport a capacity of 37 millionpassengers a year.

The new terminal will have roadaccess via a new six lane road fromNH-8 and will also have a high-speed metro line to the city (metroline (Delhi Airport rail link) withspecial city check-in facilities. Therewill also be an integrated multi-storey car park at the terminal.

Hospitality Services

Medical Facilities

The Delhi government hasdecided to construct 36

hospitals inN

ew Delhi, inthe run-up to the 2010Commonwealth Games.

Some of these hi-techhospitals will be built in theTrans-Yamuna area of DelhiInitially a fund of Rs.150

million has been planned for the construction of thehospitals, but more fundswill be made available asand when needed.

Power Supply

y Addition of power supply to theexisting 3,500 MW supply

available to the city.y Delhi will see the availability of 

power enhanced to 7,000 MWfrom the present 4,000 MW bythe Commonwealth Games in2010

y In the coming years, the city will

get power from the Damodar Valley Corp, National ThermalPower Corp, the Dadri power plant, the Jhajhar plant and thePragati power plant - these total4,240 MW.

Green Delhi

Government wants to turn greenDelhi into lush green this timebefore the 2010 Commonwealth

Games. Its horticulture department has

sown 41,000 species of plants atRoshanara Bagh which are likely toflower during the Games period.

Some of the trees being grown bythe MCD include Plumeria Alba,Plumeria Acutifolia, Lagerstromia

Flosreginae, Colvillea Racemosa,Bougainvillea, Hisbiscus, Lantana,Cassia alata, Jatropha, Neem,

  Ashoka tree etc. It also plans tosow five lakh plants and shrubs sothat they are ready by then.

Clean Delhi

Delhi will look more clean thanever before in the coming 2

years. With an eye on the

Commonwealth Games 2010,the MCD has taken up the taskof civilising unruly citizensbefore the event.

The MCD is finalising the rules

for implementing the new finesfor littering public places, andwilling to take the help of private sector organisations toimpose the fines on the spot.
