DOOR COUNTY YMCA Job Description

SWIM INSTRUCTOR

FLSA: Non-exempt/Hourly Report To: Aquatics Director Position Grade: Hourly Pay Grade F GENERAL FUNCTIONS Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching participants how to swim, while developing character and strengthening Christian values through the constant nurturing of Spirit, Mind and Body. Instructors will model and help to instill in our members and participants, the YMCA core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect, and Responsibility. SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 16 years of age to work in the Aquatics Department, by rules of the State of Wisconsin. Community CPR w/AED and First Aid certified is a prerequisite of hire, but will allow 90 days post-hire to obtain. Listen First Training must be completed upon hire through our New Employee Orientation. Swim Instructors will know and be able to correctly demonstrate and assess swim skills, both on deck and in the water, and must know sequence of swimming levels. Instructors must be able to communicate, motivate and evaluate all ages and swim levels of participants. As staff of the YMCA, member service is everyone’s job! Provide quality customer service, assist in keeping the facilities clean, deal with all situations with a positive Christian attitude, and support the YMCA and other staff while on and off duty. Forward any concerns, questions, suggestions or criticisms you may have, or may have heard to your supervisor or other appropriate staff member. Familiarize yourself with all YMCA programs and activities in order to cross-sell services. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Position requires employees to observe/evaluate groups of children by sight, sound, and active interaction. Must be able to routinely lift, carry and load equipment, furnishings, and program supplies (up to 25 pounds). Must be comfortable and able to work with children while in the water. RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintain a safe and healthy environment by following state licensing regulations and knowing and reacting to unsafe behaviors in a positive fashion. Be attentive and alert at all times, recognizing the potential hazards of the environment.

2. Be prepared for class and arrive 15 minutes before scheduled class time. Utilize training resources, curriculum and aquatics personnel to make lesson plans accordingly, keeping individual students need in mind, as well as overall curriculum.

3. Possess good communication and organizational skills, demonstrate leadership abilities. Turn paperwork in on time, talk with parents before and after lessons, be professional and

cordial. Make a special effort to greet new participants/instructors and make them feel comfortable.

4. Attend the first and last class as well as 75% of the class sessions. Announce any absences in advance to class participants. Notify program coordinator when unable to attend.

5. Establish positive and productive relationships with children and families. 6. Supervise and encourage the children with positive guidance and techniques. 7. Ensure smooth program operation that is responsive to participant needs. 8. Maintain a commitment to professionalism and quality programming for children by

promoting the YMCA mission and values. 9. Attend staff meetings, staff trainings, and in-service provided by the YMCA. 10. Attend to all state licensing regulations as well as YMCA quality standards. Adhere to

OSHA standards and guidelines.
