As data practitioners we have to focus on three things influence, organize and mobilize..this must be backed by facts, a vision, strategy and execution roadmap.5 AlyData 2015

DATA IS THE NEW SOIL.IT SPROUTS FLOWERS AND WEEDS.Copyright Jay Zaidi, AlyData 2012-2015

David McCandliss - So, I've been working as a data journalist for about a year, and I keep hearing a phrase all the time, which is this: "Data is the new oil." Data is the kind of ubiquitous resource that we can shape to provide new innovations and new insights, and it's all around us, and it can be mined very easily. It's not a particularly great metaphor in these times, especially if you live around the Gulf of Mexico, but I would, perhaps, adapt this metaphor slightly, and I would say that data is the new soil. Because for me, it feels like a fertile, creative medium. Over the years, online, we've laid down a huge amount of information and data, and we irrigate it with networks and connectivity, and it's been worked and tilled by unpaid workers and governments. And, all right, I'm kind of milking the metaphor a little bit. But it's a really fertile medium, and it feels like visualizations, infographics, data visualizations, they feel like flowers blooming from this medium. But if you look at it directly, it's just a lot of numbers and disconnected facts. But if you start working with it and playing with it in a certain way, interesting things can appear and different patterns can be revealed.8 AlyData 2015

The next rule is: Help them see what you are saying.15 AlyData 2015

A 2002 TDWI study titled Data Quality and the Bottom Line: Achieving Business Success through a Commitment to High Quality Data, estimated that U.S. businesses lost $600B due to bad data. The report's findings were based on interviews with industry experts, leading-edge customers, and survey data from 647 respondents. In todays environment, this estimate is at least $1 Trillion. This is equivalent to 6% of U.S. Gross Domestic Product.Primary causes Incorrect Data, Reconciliation Issues, Data Duplication, Aging, and Incomplete data. Copyright Jay Zaidi, AlyData 2012-2015

How many of you are aware of this fact??? In todays environment poor data quality is costing us US $1 Trillion.this is a staggering amount of money, yet organisations dont appreciate it, since none of them actually spend the time to quantify the impact of poor quality data....we have to do it for them...16 AlyData 2015

IMPACT OF BAD DATA AND INFORMATION QUALITYUSD 455 Billion> USD 1000 BillionSlice of the US GDP (6% to 15%)Organizations Operating Expense (15% to 45%)CyberCrimesDQ & IQ Copyright Jay Zaidi, AlyData 2012-2015

This is mind blowing Im sure youve read about the impact of cyber crimes the recent theft of OPM data, Target, etc.the sensational stories gain eyeballs and attention across the globe...CEOs and CIOs have lost their jobs due to it...So, there is fear and loss of credibility associated with it...but the impact of cyber crimes is less than half of that of bad data...yet data quality isnt on anyones radar...we have to fix that...17 AlyData 2015

DATA QUALITY ISSUES GET FANNED OUT AS DATA FLOWS THROUGH THE INFORMATION SUPPLY CHAIN.

Imagine a river Ganges flowing through India from the north to the south and eastas it flows across towns and cities it gathers momentum, picks up nutrients, drops sediments, is polluted by the discharge of industrial and human waste and finally reaches the ocean...the same is true of data flowing through the veins of an organisation...18 AlyData 2015

Ford Motors used quality as the driver to transform itself from a manufacturing company to a consumer product company.Resulted in U.S. $300 Million cost saving and increased revenues. In the 80s, Ford CEO Jacques Nasser introduced the slogan Quality is Job 1.Was driven by customer satisfaction and desire to grow revenues. 1.5 points of customer satisfaction drove 1 point more loyalty, In North America this translated into more than $2 Billion on incremental revenue and $100 million in profit. How Ford Motors achieved its goals - Focused on quality at every step from concept to production,Invested in total quality management tools, process and measurement,Trained staff in quality concepts,Diligently measured and improved quality across the product supply chain - process-by-process,Had commitment from every level of the organization, andIncented staff to focus on quality.Copyright Jay Zaidi, AlyData 2012-2015

Tie the data quality change initiative to real business challenges example reducing the accounting close from 18 days to 7 days, producing pristine and high quality MBS disclosures, providing proactive feedback regarding quality of loan data to lenders, rather than doing it after 2 weeks of deliveryreducing the re-work and band aids applied to data across the InformatioN Supply Chain...etc......25 AlyData 2015

AGILE DATA QUALITY.

Time-to-value is important to the business. Every data quality project and issue should use the Agile Methodology. Waterfall techniques arent ideal.Start with a goal or problem. Prioritize requirements and execute sprints. Engage Subject Matter Experts and stakeholders throughout the process.Project success requires cross-functional team of SMEs, Scrum Masters and project staff, coupled with quality management background.

Do you have a main point? Consider putting just one word on the slide by itself. Want them to remember a few items? Dont show everything at once. Instead, show one item at a time. Have a picture that expresses your idea? Scale that picture so that it fills the slide. Have a quote that says it all? Let it say it and remove everything else.42 AlyData 2015
